Here's Why the 2014 Ford Expedition XLT is Such an Awesome Used SUV

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This week we're taking a look back at the 2014 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 full-size SUV to see if the third generation is worth your hard-earned used car dollars.
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/stores/prn
This week's episode of TestDrive Spotlight was made possible with the help of Excellence Auto Acton in Acton Vale, Québec. If you're interested in buying this specific vehicle check out their website: www.excellenceauto.com/vehicu...
The third generation Ford Expedition is new enough that some models are still available to buy certified pre-owned in 2020, while others are as old as my Ford Focus. The third generation ran from 2007 until 2017 and had a mid-cycle facelift for the 2015 model year. Our Spotlight, review, and full tour is on this 2014 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4. There were two other trims available, the Limited and King Ranch, along with a number of options and packages. Our test model is a base model in the truest sense, but one that has been incredibly well kept over the past 6 years, looking as if it just rolled off the assembly line and into our garage.
We go over the technical specifications of the Ford Expedition including what makes this differ from the Ford F-150 this vehicle's platform is based off of, what sort of options were available on the Expedition, and what sort of price you should be looking at in the used market for one of these. We go over the exterior features along with some history on the Ford Excursion and how the Expedition EL/MAX come into play.
We jump inside to go over the XLT's interior design and features, including three-zone air conditioning, a Bluetooth/MP3/SiriusXM radio system, power locks, windows, and mirrors, and power driver seat controls. Other features include an aftermarket backup camera paired with the factory rear park assist. We demonstrate how the third row egress works along with the second row cargo mode, and overall interior space.
We then take the 2014 Ford Expedition on a real world road test to go over how this full-size SUV handled, performs, and drives on the road, including the 5.4L Triton V8 engine, 6 speed automatic transmission, 4x4 mode, and the fully independent long-travel suspension. We go over the pricing between the different years available on this including the original MSRP for this vehicle.
We then conclude with a buyer's guide on the 3rd generation Expedition, with common problems and issues to look out for, what sort of complaints owners have had with these vehicles over the years, and some tops to better prepare yourself if you're in the market for one of these SUVs.

I have a 2011 with 220,000 miles. Still runs and drives like new. Use only synthetic oil and have changed all fluids with synthetic. These vehicles were built to last. These vehicles are used in commercial and government duties and perform flawlessly. Would definitely recommend.

Why do I heard about so many problems with these online? Specifically the "engine sludge" and cam phaser issues? Alot of people say to avoid the expeditions before 2015. I really want to buy a 2011 one in my area with 168k miles. But I'm afraid because I keep reading mixed reviews on these lol

@@tb-xy7lg because of ignorance or bad luck. Like I stressed, only 5w20 Synthetic oil change every 5-7k and tranny every 60k transfer case 30k diff 90-100k full Synthetic on everything. The paint is really the issue with these the hood and tailgate plus rocker door jams are prone to rust and corrosion. These vehicles will easily reach 300k with that maintenance regime.

I have a 2015 XLT/King Ranch short wheelbase with the 3.5 Ecoboost. It has 130K. I bought it at 22K miles. It was some sort of a fleet vehicle originally. It's labeled as an XLT but it has all the King Ranch features. It's good to know that 130K is nothing on these if well maintained and I am in no hurry to get rid of it. I own a 2008 early 3rd gen XLT Expedition with 165,000 miles on it, live in the rust belt, and hit a deer with this vehicle and I have to say that overall it has been a reliable truck. Of couse it has had a few problems as it has gotten older so I'll name some. Power windows break from time to time, the exhaust manifold only on the passenger side has a known warping problem, the torque converter in the transmission is starting to shutter around 40mph which is comon complant around this mileage and needs replacement, has a faulty tire sensor in the spare and can give off a false low tire pressure warning from time to time, a cheap plastic T fiting that connects the hot engine coolant to the rear heater core cracked, and lastly the paint had rust contamintion from the factory and causes premature paint failure on aluminum parts like the hood and tailgate. Even with the paint and other problems, structurally and mechanically everything still works good.

I still own a 2007 with only 138,000 miles. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned. 14 years later , only major issue I had was a fuel pump in February. Regular maintenance pays off. I did replace factory Struts with Monroes and man it rode better than it did while new. Drivers side window regulator and the rear actuator went out. But I replaced original plugs at 117,000 miles along with a coil pack. So tell me if I haven't gotten my money's worth out of this Suv. I would buy another if they put V8s back in them. I have people ride in it and can't believe it's 14 years old , been told it rides better than the Tahoe and my brother in law says it has much more power than his full size Toyota SUV...

Have a navigator of the same generation, bought it used. One of the best luxury vehicles not because it has many gizmos, nor because it has great materials, it is because it has great ride quality, great interior space (the 3rd row is bigger than the new escalade) And specialy: because it is very dependable. I looked hard at the 2014 Expedition as a used vehicle in Canada, but opted for it's cousin, the Navigator "L", built by Ford's Lincoln division. Most of the mechanics of the vehicle are identical, along with the interior layout. Same F-150 frame, engine, transmission and everything else that makes it go down the road. Same power, load and towing ability. The Navigator has a number of standard upgrades above the Expedition and I found that the two models were priced competitively in the used market. The Navigator will provide you with additional body sound proofing, heated and cooled seats, premium leather interior, real wood interior accents, a better infotainment system and back-up camera, power liftgate, pwr folding seats and power sunroof. Navigator comes standard with the "air ride" suspension system and power running boards. Navigators are fairly rare in Canada, so you may have to do some extensive searching to find a low mileage in great shape, but is worth the hunt.

This is a well known issue on these engines and I feel getting to 260km on original hardware is pretty good. Also have a '15 with the 3.5L Ecoboost, 124,000km on it and it has a siezed engine. @@PRNTestDrive Honestly what attracts me to the Mercury Mariner and Mountaineer are the clear tail-lights. I'm a sucker for them. I wanna drive something with some uniqueness/ quirkiness. I drive a 2010 Versa that has seen better days lol. I dream of driving something bigger, comfortable, and different from the crowd.

The 5.4 3v is tried and true when maintained, but these aren't maintained. Out of 10 expeditions I'd say 5 of them will have the cam phaser, timing chain or roller follower issues. One mechanic by the name of Car Wizard, owner of Omega Auto Clinic has personally replaced 16 of them at 7k a piece.

I'm familiar with Car Wizard, I subscribe to his channel. These will be hit or miss in terms of maintenance, some people will have taken care of them and they'll be way up there in mileage, others will have been severely neglected and cost more than it's worth to fix up.

Hi. I just came across this video. I am in the market for a newer car. I have always wanted a Ford Expedition. I found a 2017 limited 60k miles. I want it so bad. But have recently learned that the 2017-2019 have internal engine problems. It’s a part that goes bad (can’t remember the name) and it’s a very expensive fix. What are your thoughts.

  • @PRNTestDrive

It's possible there's issues with those engines, I wouldn't be able to say for sure unfortunately. When I was doing my research on this specific generation I found that a lot of owners had little to no problems, and these engines would run to at least 400,000 miles without significant problems.

@@PRNTestDrive You have absolutely no idea how much you just made my day. I remember now. It’s called the Cam Phasers. But I cannot find where the expeditions were affected by this. I have done soooo much research on the 2017 Expeditions and just can’t find anything majorly wrong. I work 100% remote, so I honestly cannot justify buying a brand new one. It will literally sit and rot in my driveway.

The stories are true. Replaced my engine at 162,000 km due to timing chain tensioner failure, which cause camshaft bearing failure. These engines are completely intolerant of poor maintenance (ask any Ford technician), so my advice is to stay away if you cannot verify oil changes were done on time.

  • @user0057r

It is an excellent suv with an excellent engine. Yes, the key is to get a well maintained one; a poorly maintained 5.4 triton that didn’t have regular oil changes can be a problem.. don’t get the eco boost unless you like turbos constantly going on and off... and the new ones have 10 SPEED transmissions, so the revs are always low and the turbo cant make up its mind... 2014 is the last real year of a big American v8 suv...

Dealer in Virginia replaced cloth with leather and vehicle has only 72000 miles. Drinks gas like a drunken sailor but man, what a ride. Great video and answered a lot of questions about the vehicle.
