Here's What Mud Terrain Tires Are Really like on the Street - Land Cruiser Cooper Discoverer STT Pro

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser build is officially underway! I did a lot of research on which tire to go with since it's the basis for any build. I decided on these Cooper Tire Discoverer STT Pros. They're mud terrain tires with beefy tread for serious off roading. In a future episode we will show the off road capabilities, but a big concern of mine is how these behave on the road. That's what we're covering this week.

I had 35' muddies on my 80 series here in Australia, it was great offroad . Great for drowning out the missus whinging on road ...just turn and nod ,im not sure what she was saying. Fuel consumption was a win for me, i beat everyone,i used the most by far! The speedo was out but if you stayed 40kmh each side you were safe Sometimes id give my neighbour a lift to town I'd ask him about the road noise and he said it wasn't to bad much the same as his harvester, and he was a bit deaf from his younger days working in a sawmill.

The loudness test of these new tires is sort of pointless, because new mud tires start out relatively quiet and then will get much louder over time.

  • @Chobham

    @Chobham

You are correct - I ended up getting these STT Pros, and they were relatively quiet new, but at about 15-20k miles in they got much louder. Now at 30k, they are REALLY loud! They *might* have another 7-10k miles left in them, and fear they could get louder. They are an amazing mud tire though...hands down.

I find it ironic that it would be illegal in many states to drive my noisy car with headphones, but if there is really aggressive soundproofing built into the vehicle that's no big deal. Inconsistent.

i have the stt pros in a 35" on my jeep, have had them on it for over 2 years now and have over 40k kms on them. yeah they have some road noise but compared to a lot of other similar aggressive tread pattern tires they are quite quiet in my opinion. I have abused them thoroughly through mud, rocks, snow and water, and have driven them across Canada. Hands down they are the best tire i have ever used. i typically air down to 5-7 psi with my beadlocks and the amount of sidewall flex is unreal for how much traction the tire gets absorbing around rocks and obstacles.

These are the tires I really want for my FJ Cruiser but didn't have the money last August when I replaced the horrible Dune Grapplers the previous owner had installed. I was making my trek back to Colorado and Moab and I know they would be good there as well as muddy conditions in Ohio/Kentucky. My #1 reason is similar as I wanted an American-made tire and with Cooper being based in Ohio I want to support companies that employ fellow Ohioans and Cooper has really grown in quality in the off road community. Since I couldn't afford them at the time I went for some Cooper ATP's as they were on sale and would be fine for out west but the shop made a mistake and installed another customer's AT3 4s (285/70-17) and since they were swamped they let me have them for the same price. While they were an amazing tire for the drive and off-roading out west I would have preferred the STT Pro's for my trip last weekend to Athens County Crawlers Off Road Park as it was a bit greasy. Although I will say they held their own with others and their mud tires as long as I kept them spinning at rev limiter in the gooey sections. Great review and love the Land Cruiser.

Biggest thing you will see will be the hit to mpgs. Not that the LC gets great gas mileage in the first place but it will take a hit. I ran 31x1050r15 S/T Maxx on my 60 series for almost 5yrs (lasted me about 30k miles with lots of offroad trips) and they were great, a good compromise between the full MT tire and an AT. Only sucky part was that they didn't last as long as I wish they would have. They had great road manners, did perfectly offroad (two different trips guys in my club got flats, all running around 15psi and no issues with mine. Took a lag bolt to kill one of mine and that was through the sidewall) and it wasn't until probably 25k miles that they started to get loud. My 60 was not quiet by any means but had multiple offroad buddies impressed with how quiet they were. Just recently went to a more AT based tire with the Cooper AT3 XLT, they have been awesome over the last month or so of driving, but the biggest improvement was the gas mileage. Gained almost a full two miles per gallon avg. over the S/T Maxx (going from around 9.5 to just over 11mpg) and that was with only a 5lbs. per tire difference. So just image what an extra 20lbs PER TIRE will do to the rotational parasitic drag. Also, with regards to running AC vs. having the windows down, an engineer roommate in college did a drag coefficient study on this (mind you this was 1998). He found in his experiments, research and study that the difference between the two was almost negligible. The main factors that played a larger role were the overall health of the engine/drivetrain and the tires.

You can easily lift the whole front end up using a block of wood and that jack where the little circle thing is on the skid plate, that way you don't have to do one corner at a time. Same with the rear, i lift by the rear differential using a thin block of wood to get the rears up quick.

On our 4runner when we went to 33's it actually made our speedometer exact on. Cause manufacturers actually set the speed a off for liability reason. I actually checked the speed with 3 different gps apps and even the radar stands that display your speed and they have all shown the same results. Now each vehicle is different on how offset it actually is.

I have the exact same Cooper tire on my 200 series except they are 295 R20. Great in the dirt and mud- still waiting for some snow to test them on that. I find they have a "hum" on the road which isn't all that loud necessarily but def noticeable at higher speeds. Also affects tight turning which makes it a bit of a challenge. Almost feels like they rub but I have checked again and again and cannot confirm any rubbing.

FYI your speedo gear not only controls your speedometer but can dictate shift timing as well. If you change tire size you should correct the speedo gear as welll, it's typically super easy to do and a pretty cheap little part.

Great video Mate Thx!.. Why did you decide to change the wheels to 16” and not Stock with the original 18”?

Better for offroad, although I don't know that it was for that very reason...Especially if climbing ANY kind of rock, more sidewall is better.

What kind of 16" wheels are those? I have an '07 Land Cruiser with AHC and am currently running the stock 18" wheels on them right now but would like a little more side wall. Did you have any clearance issues going down to a 16" wheel? Thanks for all the info!

It would be nice to see how the tires perform off-road, since that seems to be the main reason for getting them. If you flex your suspension much, you'll likely start wishing for more lift quickly.

There’s plenty of videos on KZread like you suggest. I was more curious how they performed on-road as that’s where most people do most of their driving, and then you have added ability to take them off-road.

@@EatSleepDrive probably sticking with the 100 series...was considering the LX470 options like most...good price points...wifey wants late model 200 because its newer and has more amenities when she is in the passenger seat...LOL...found a company that imports LC from around various countries and they source left hand diesel models that are legal in the states...mostly the 100 and 105 series...that another thought of mine...would be cool for a 'real' LC with the turbo diesel...

2db is a significant difference. Sounds isn't measured like lenght, volume or percentage. Fatigue will set in way sooner than with the stock tyres. Cheers

I was under the impression that these tires are high void all season light truck tires, not MT's. Cooper has an Evolution MT. Also, one of the most amazing things about this tire is the ability to retain traction on wet pavement. I've had many MT's and all terrains and these blow them out of the proverbial water in stopping in the rain. I live in the PNW and they have saved me multiple times on the wet roads.

Throw a set of 35 inch Mickey Thompson Baja's on there and you'll have second thoughts 😂 I went from 33 inch all terrains on my 2003 F150 to 35 inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. Fuel mileage went down 3 mpgs. Noticable power loss and braking performance was worse. Very loud on the highway and lots of vibrations at slow speed from the huge lugs on the tires. Stock wheels and tires were around 65lbs each. 35" wheels and tires were about 120 lbs each. BUT IT LOOKED SICK AF!
