@@bucca2TO BE FAIR… the mortal instruments wasn’t actually inspired by the fanfic mortal instruments. like if u actually read the fic (which you SHOULDN’T. it traumatized me for life) and compare it to her books they don’t actually have anything in common (besides cassies obsession w incestuous relationships). the fic that actually inspired the mortal instruments was the draco trilogy. a lot of the story points were basically the same, and she literally just copy-pasted the falcon backstory from draco to jace asjsgjssgsj

I read these books multiple times in my teenage years and yet somehow the only thing I can clearly remember from City of Bones is when Madame Dorothea told Jace that if he was half as funny as he thought he was, he'd be twice as funny as he is. And I only remember that because I had to sit down with a pen and paper and convert the whole thing into an equation so I could figure out what she meant. Fully sat there like okay Jace thinks he's 8 funny and half of that is 4, and 4 divided by 2 is 2, therefore Jace is 2 funny and hence, he thinks he's 4 times funnier than he is. I have such a clear memory of doing this and I'd love to know why my brain kept this memory over literally anything else.

nah simon's arguably as dramatic as jace. evidence, he literally storms off and dies.

As someone who knows where this is going, Jace is written like a superhero where the comic book writers cannot agree on a backstory for him so they keep changing what his origin story is supposed to be until he ends up with three sets of parents and a relationship that technically isn't incest (except that it still kind of is, if you think about it). But he was only written by one person, and I'm pretty sure she had all this planned out from the start.

My favorite detail of this series is that Simon canonically loves Milfs (mentioned on page 4) and it is never talked about again. I constantly imagine him wearing one of those "I ❤ Milfs" shirts when it isn't explicitly mentioned otherwise and it makes his scenes so much funnier.

I love that both the movie and the show added a scene where valentine is like “lets tell them theyre siblings but theyre not” like they knew it was a plot point that would drop the audience quick lmao

Same. I tried reading it once, but I found the writing to be terrible. Like that horribly awkward way to introduce Isabelle, to let us know she’s his sister. But even worse was when he explains demons to someone who should already know everything about them, even though they’re supposedly alone in order to forcibly let Clary/the reader know about them. What an awful way to information drop, ugh. Also, as Cari rightfully points out, Clary is a 15 y/o in this club (how did she even get there? She can’t legally drive yet. Did someone drop her off? Is Simon 16 and has his own car yet?) But yeah, what’s a 15 y/o doing in a club? Why would you follow someone with a knife? That. That right there is my number one writing pet peeve - forcing a plot along through sheer stupidity. And why would I, the reader, want to know and follow along a stupid MC? Frankly I find it insulting. Sure, the target audience is teens, but just because it’s teens doesn’t mean we should expect them to overlook or accept poor writing and dumb drivel/characters.

i always thought the plot hole of jace not recognizing his father in the Circle group photo was bc jace was looking at valentine thinking that was michael and no one has any photos of anyone, like the shadow hunters need to carry around photo ID and it would legit solve 85% of their misunderstandings

She made just such an amazing series explaining exactly how horrible Cassie is and exactly how much Cassie loves brother-sister stuff to this day. Julian and Emma in her new series are sibling coded and I will die on that hill. They literally grew up together and Emma thinks of Julian's siblings as her own siblings.

I've been reading his books soo long ago and only now I realise that Jace is just the human embodiment of a cat. Doesn't like cucumbers and bergamot, gets grumpy if things don't go his way, is terribly narcissistic, appears and states at you out of nowhere, has a weird focus on dead birds...

The side quest for Rat Simon will always stand out as my favourite part of the book. So ridiculous, so out of left field and to top it off escaping on a flying moterbycle. Just 10/10 all round haha

Fr! I was in the TRENCHES. Like I made my pen into a Stele, I drew runes on myself (RIP to 15 yo me drawing a strength rune on my arm before my grandpas funeral WTF?!) I hate-love thinking back on it bc I was so fucking embarassing 😭 I think I stopped at like 17 bc I just kinda lost interest in the books, but I binged the TV show like 4 times

I went to her book signing in Florence (2013) I was 14 and obsessed 😭😭😭😂

Drawing the parallel to a D&D game honestly makes so much sense - Clary is the new party member that gets included into an already existing adventuring group of heroes and has to be brought up to date with the current lore - fantasy creatures like vampires, werewolves and demons - fantasy races and classes like elves and warlocks - they all have insanely huge plot armour - Valentine’s uprising etc is the main story arc and Clary’s motivation (aka backstory) gets roped into the main plot line to explain why she goes along with the party - they deviate from said main plot all the time to finish more entertaining side plots - Simon is their favourite NPC that sometimes just appears from nowhere and knows just enough about the lore to be kind of helpful - all the main characters are the players’ wish fulfilments and just the right kind of edgy loner but also charismatic star of the show and badass fighter

Did I read all of these almost religiously when I was younger? Yes. Am I about to spend 2 hrs of my life watching cari doing a recap? Also yes

THANK GOD it's not just me, Simon is the best and I love him. Absolutely carried the book for me, and his misadventures later on are my favorite parts of the series

As someone who never watched this movie realizing Jamie Campbell Bower played Jace truly blew my mind right out of my face and onto my phone. JCB how did you end up in this movie 😂

My sister and I call Jace's personality a "Herondale Complex." It's a martyr complex crossed with the vampire "you have to stay away from me for your own good" complex with a pound of angst and sarcasm mixed in.

But why does calling it the "Herondale Complex" make it so much better when you've read the Infernal Devices and realize that it truly runs in the family? Even Kit gets the complex in The Dark Artifices! And it continued in The Last Hours too 😂😂

When you read all of it, when you get to meet Will in the past and it all makes sense 🤣 Cassie just went full ham on the Herondales. It's like: "Yeah, these are the hottest ever, most dramatic people you'll ever meet, who actually believe in the one true love for them and once they fall they fall so hard the freaking earth shatters". And I was and am here for every moment of it 💖

The fact that in multiple book series siblings or parbatai,, who are like siblings anyway, spend so much time kissing or wanting to kiss, like it just doesn't even end after the mortal instruments book series is insane (I've grown up with the book and tv show and it's so nostalgic lol, even if looking back some of it is not great. Like Alec especially just was always so important to me,, because like first gay character I probably ever read about oops)

Clary’s impulsivity and Jace’s sarcasm tried to end me on multiple occasions when reading this book back in the day. Can’t wait for the summary 😂 also to my understanding Jocelyn and Luke weren’t in a relationship at all at the beginning? They didn’t get together until later right ?

I don't think they officially were together until the end of book 3 when Jocelyn wakes up and is like "do I or do I not" to Whatsherface WhowaspreviouslyaHerondale.

I will protect the series with my entire self. Is it awkward at points yes but we don't pick up a ya novel from the early 2000s for some amzing literary masterpiece. Cassies writing definitely improved especially with the unnecessary exposition but i always come back to this series every year. Gotta love we still have 4 more books in the TSC series.

Nah bc I was SO HYPED when they were revealed to be siblings bc it would mean the end of the ship (idk I really hated Clace and I still do) There was never a more disappointed 15 year old than me when I discovered they actually WERENT siblings

I remember reading these like a decade ago and just thinking "so is everyone else reading these just cool with this whole possible incest thing?" and being so confused about it 😭I loved the books minus that glaringly huge issue and just decided to just shut down my brain every time that plot point came back up again. I just refused to even acknowledge it. The mental gymnastics and cognitive dissonance I was able to display just to read this series was truly amazing 😂. Side note: When this got turned into a movie and I went and saw it in theaters. When it was over I went to the restrooms and there was a girl in there absolutely SOBBING to her mother about how "They fucking ruined it mom. There's no hope for a sequel. It's RUINED". Her poor mom had no idea what tf to say 😭The girl wasn't wrong tho.

you’ve created a monster, cari! i’m 100% addicted to this kind of video. i’ve always wanted to read mortal instruments but never managed to finish the first book and now i can finally know more about the clary and jace drama. i don’t know if you plan on doing more of these in the future, but i highly recommend the “shatter me” series. either way, thank you so much for taking the time to record this, i’m sure it’s gonna be just as insane and fun as acotar

as someone who read it as a fourteen y/o and watched the movie almost at the same age, the kissing scene was everything to me. my best friend and i played the demi lovato song and cried (not literally) imagining the clace kiss. my cringe teenage years were the best

Simon deserves SO much better than someone who finds the choice between him and her literal *brother* to be a difficult one Like... if that's a question she even has to *think* about fora second... you're too good for her bestie!! 😔 God, I hope he ended up getting a happy ending I quit before finishing the series bc I just couldn't stand it anymore

Simon doesn't end up with Clary, in fact after the second book they just stay friends, but Simon gets other two romantic interests that he purses at the same time(yes, at some point Simon has two girlfriends), one of them was Isabelle and the ending implies that their relationship is going to last.

I’m shadow hunter trash. I own every book. I know they are bad but that’s why i love them. I love how stupid clary is and the poorly written party scenes. I read 19 of them in a month because I wanted to reread everything in order before reading chain of iron. I have gone into mourning because of this series. I wore white for a week because every time I thought about a certain death I couldn’t stop crying. I love these books

As someone who's read all of Cassandra Clare's books at least 3 times, I enjoyed this video so much 😂 the books are truly unhinged, but that's what makes them so enjoyable as a fantasy series. Thank you for making me laugh so much with this video, can't wait for the rest!

My mom bought me this book bc it was 50% off at target and then handed it to my 11-yo self saying: “it was on the shelf next to Twilight, so if it gets inappropriate stop reading it.” Needless to say I did not- I was fully obsessed until I read the last book and thought “wait, are these actually really bad?” I felt kinda gaslit lmao

30:07 The idea that you could somehow hide a small country, even if it's effectively just a small village, along the border of France and Germany is honestly so funny. Like even if invisibility in this universe is the kind where you are physically capable of perceiving something, but mentally you can't grasp it/it slides off your conscious thought, so you can't realise that you are seeing it, that's just not possible. The French-German border is only about 450 km long and it's one of the most trafficked, most well-policed and more densely populated non-conurbation areas in the EU. It's not like there's vast stretches of untouched nature where you can just not happen upon a very small nation, that doesn't exist in Europe, there's at least roads and fields everywhere. Also land has always been crazy expensive in that region, so unless they have Wakanda-style mountain illusions and/or Harry Potter Quidditch World Championship-style area enchantments that mess with non-magic people's minds (and possibly their perception of space) to make them stay away from the place, you are definitely not staying secret. At least say it's hidden somewhere way up in the Alps or something, at least then it's slightly less inevitable that some civilian is going to just randomly bump into the place every other week on accident.

I actually lost it at the Parent trap pictures at 1:24:40 . And totally forgot the whole plot of this book except the end, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for covering it.

First time I read this series I was prefaced with the fact that they ARE NOT siblings, so I don’t think I ever read it in a way where I was in that weird limbo…But it’s sooo weird, esp w Sebastian later on. Anyways, can’t wait for the rest of your videos like this for the other books!!! And maybe even the other series too 🤪

Ok listen, you have to tell them about the reason why the vampires took Simon. And it is like, realy bad. The reason is: When vampires (from this world) get realy drunk, they turn into rats, mice and bats (at least I understood it that way) and the vampires thought Simon was just a realy drunk one. I kind of love that fact.

This book series is oddly enough my guilty pleasure. My friends and I LOVED it when we were around 11-12 years old, and then reread almost ALL the books during the pandemic, because we had nothing better to do. I'm ashamed to admit I can probably recite the entire plot (prequels included) in my sleep, so I'm very excited about your plot summary!
