Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunters empire birthed out of a very successful career in fanfiction.. also a very dramatic one - so I thought I'd take a look at some of that, the City of Bones book, and finally watch the movie

    Since Clary and Jace's feelings for each other is the greatest driving force of the story (pulling her further into the Shadowhunter world), an illegal quasi-incestuous relationship between Jace and Alec is framed as a threat to plot development. How the author addresses incest as taboo is totally incoherent because quasi-incest with Alec is narratively "worse" than real incest with Clary, so she can't actually commit to fully condemning the latter.

    Someone pointed out that Valentine making Jace think him and Clary were siblings was an abuse tactic. He had already drilled into Jace that he was unworthy of love and that he made everything worse. By making Jace think he had fallen in love with his sister, he was just reinforcing these beliefs and trying to get Jace to realign himself with Valentine because of his own self-hatred. So the whole thing was never about incest but abuse at the hands of a parental figure. Shame that no one tried to write the characters and story with this in mind.

  • @AmandaTheJedi

    @AmandaTheJedi

    2 жыл бұрын

    The abuse/manipulation and control tactic of him doing that is clear as day even without it being a lie, it just becomes an added layer when Jace finds out it IS a lie. But I don't think the incest aspect and discussion around it can be pulled off the table for a few reasons, especially when talking about this book alone. Mainly because that's how it was presented to readers. It's in the book to be shocking and to throw off readers that spent an entire book watching these characters open up to one another on an intimate level, so we feel what the characters feel. It's hard to frame the complete manipulation story in adaptations when the reveal doesn't come for two more books. Then there's (spoilers) stuff that happens when the real Johnathan is introduced that keeps swirling into those themes that keeps the discussion very much on the table.

  • @MsCoolestgal

    @MsCoolestgal

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@AmandaTheJedi That makes a lot of sense. The books have been out for years so it's easy to forget that people had to wait years for the reveal that it was all a lie. In the meantime, it was still very much 'ewww they are siblings'. And yeah the stuff with Jonathan and his weird obsession with Clary was also very weird. It all goes down to the writing of the text, and using the trope primarily for shock value, *sigh*.

    @@MsCoolestgal you also can't forget that other books from cassandra seem to pull the incest card as well... Just not as much "strong" as in this book. Or is that just me? 😂 We have the Infernal Devices, with Jem and Will multiple times having conversations with a innuendo that at points almost makes you feel that they'll be entering a 3 people relationship with Tessa - being that Jem and Will were raised together and are like brothers. Than you have Dark Artifices, where Emma is raised from a young age with Julian, she's practically adopted by his family, and they fall in love. I cannot read this stories and not feel the incest appeal behind them 😂 it's really sad because the stories would be much more enjoyable without this hidden feeling, but maybe that's just me who's getting these messages?

Even with the third book, I was immensely relieved that they weren't actually siblings, but it made me realize Clare still needed to have ACTUAL incest in the book to satisfy herself with Sebastian... The tv show is just campy popcorn fun and I love that the show-runners were like, "none of that girl vs. girl b.s. in OUR series! Like, if you're gonna put incest in, at least go all the way and explain exactly why it's wrong and unnatural. But Cassandra didn't do that. She just put in a few "people will find our relationship sickening" but did not explain why. Then, the incest plot gets resolved by just "we're not actually siblings", so what was the point of making the reader believe it?

    @@NickaLah you do know that Luke and Leia were not originally intended to be siblings, right? Yeah, it's one of things that if you look on it as a whole, it's like WTF?, but most of the fandom understands it's a retcon. Also, no one knows they are siblings, and yeah, it might be unconfortable after the fact, but that's pretty much the exact opposite of what's going on here. Hell fans were hesitant to ship Reylo in fear that they were going to end up being siblings too. Jace and Clary ARE intended to be siblings and everyone is supposed to think they are as well. In this case it was retconned to be OK because they aren't, but I still find it more icky than SW, where Lucas was still making it up as he went along. Retconning often makes for unintended side effects, but everything about Clace is deliberate.

    @@AmandaTheJedi Yes, but .. playing heavily into Star Wars fan culture is also kind of a pretty huge running thing present within The Mortal Instruments books. So I think the comparison is still fair enough. It was still in there, whether it was originally planned in Star Wars or not, and someone specifically drawing inspiration from that does not necessarily have to overlook it completely JUST because it was an unplanned thing that just oopsied its way into the original inspiration source because these things happen sometimes when you're a pantser rather than a plotter with it. Along with drawing inspirations from various classic literature as well as like Greco-Roman mythology and all ye old Greek plays and such, all stuff where playing around with the mindfuckery of incest secretly or known is actually not totally unheard of either. 😅😅

    Right? I remember trying to read it way back when, went "WHAT THE FUCK," didn't touch it for a year or two, and finally news of them not actually being related came through. Or I started it, got distracted and didn't finish, and didn't _want_ to finish because of the incest. I couldn't find the drive to care after, especially since Clary and Jace were led to believe otherwise. That's so uncomfortable, and more likely to have happened because of the editors or something. It's not like Cassandra Claire didn't already like incest, so there was little reason for her to want to change it if it wasn't for the backlash.

If I knew it was based off on fanfiction, I would have approached it with the mindset I would usually reserve for fanfiction? I never really got a very big "love triangle" vibe from the series. Sure Simon was in love with her in the beginning but it was very clear she had no interest in him and the books move past that particular snag pretty quickly. There is another character later on but it barely lasts an entire book if I remember correctly. Aside from the books where they thought they were siblings the overaching plot of the books have it very clear who the main couple was. Been a while since I read the books though so I might be miss remembering some things.

    My involvement as a fanartist with that ParadigmOfUncertainty Yahoo!Group that also hosted Cassandra's fics helped get me into art school and furnished my first apartment, so... hooray for fandom having direct hands in major life steps...? 😅 This is kind of long but hopefully somewhat interesting: When I was having my summer-before-senior-year prospective student interview at Ringling, the guy interviewing me was looking through my portfolio and it was going _terribly._ Like looking at my still life work and saying _"You're not good enough to get accepted at this rate"_ terribly. I was having a _meltdown_ inside because Ringling was my dream school. Then he got to a sparkly folder I had stuck in the back of my portfolio for shits and giggles, and it was full of HP fanart and LOTS of illustrations I had done for "A Sirius Affair" and "Paradigm of Uncertainty". As soon as he saw that stuff, the whole interview _turned on a dime._ "Why didn't you show this to me earlier?? These are great! I don't know what's going on in them, but each of them is telling a story and that's EXACTLY what we look for in the illustration department! Forget what I said before. Go enroll in drawing classes at your local college or university for your senior year of high school to buff up your skills and be sure to include some of THIS stuff in your admissions portfolio and you'll have no problem getting in!" After I basically picked myself up off of the floor I enrolled in night classes at University of Texas, submitted my admissions application and portfolio, and I got my acceptance letter to Ringling on Valentine's Day. I graduated in 2007 with my BFA. Then when I had to move off campus junior year, Siriologist (the author of the "A Sirius Affair" fics) lived like 25 minutes away from Ringling and sold me a BUNCH of old furniture she and her husband didn't need anymore for dirt cheap (she said she would have just given it to me for free but her husband insisted she charge me SOMETHING for it) because I had drawn so much art for her fics when I was in high school and we had become internet friends because of it. Fandom is powerful shit, man.

    As a young teen when I read these, I always thought there wasn't enough apreciation of Isabelle's character. It was really nice reading a YA book that had a female character that was really strong and powerful while still being very distinctively feminine. Isabelle, who wore heels and make-up and dresses, was a better fighter than most in their geration. She dated anyone she wanted and owned romances with donworlders, and was caring and protective of her family. But she also made mistakes and, at times, was vulnerable. In a world were most media shows the popular girl as an antagonist, the girly girls as 'stupid'... reading about her was great to help me shape my friendships with other girls and to not let myself be swayed by the 'not like the other girls' trope. Especially since my family is very academically oriented and anything else is frowned upon. So... while reading these books, Isabelle was very much a wake-up call. Because she was a girl who liked all those things society tends to belittle, and Clary points it out. Clary very much like the 'not like other girls' frowns upon Izzy, because she is pretty and likes to date around and, in a way Clary is jealous and feels superior in some ways at the same time. But with time she grows and realizes that that's not how the world works and she befriends Isabelle and honestly apreciates her. At least, that was how it hit me at the time. Also: Izzy was a little terrified of any real relationship with men... How relatable is that?

    Yesss I honestly still love the show, the cast was just pure 10/10 for me! I prefer the show cast to the movies cast anyway, especially when it comes to Alec and Izzy, they were WAY too old for those roles.

    @@TiredLex are you sure it isn't because they are two hot characters making out cannonically? I'm not saying he seemed uncomfortable with the make out scenes, he just felt... Idk, out of his element to me? Like, he was super stiff, like he couldn't express any emotion properly.

    @@MissAlikescakes I actually found it hot lmao. I mean I wasn't believing they're related, I was like "this can't be true" from the beginning, and I was just waiting for it to be revealed. And I find hot "forbidden love", "enemies to lovers" etc. tropes in general (yes, I'm basic). I gotta say tho, when I read the first 3 books I was 11 and I've never said I was normal... I can't say how I would feel about it now 11 years later, now it's mostly the sentiment for the books. Oh, and I actually like the 19th century prequel better. There's no incest, only "Withering heighs" knock-off cause the male love interest thinks he's cursed so people who will fall in love with him will die or something, so he pushes the female protagonist away of course (and people in general for that matter). But enjoyable knock off it was ;) since it's her second series it's also better written as well and has more enjoyable characters in total, especially main two (6 books and I've never gotten to like Clary for example).

    @@kenjako Jonathan/Sebastian (her actual brother) had like a weird obsession with Clary, I don't think it was really a romance tactic so much as trying to get her on his side. Like it was about control. He didn't even think of her as an actual person.

    i know clary, jace, and simon are the “main characters” but alec and magnus are my favorite. i grew to like izzy more as i read the shadowhunter books, but alec and magnus have stayed my favorites over time. alec was especially important to me and magnus is just such a badass. i watched the first season of the show simply to see them get together. the show was definitely a better adaptation than the movie, but they still managed to overcompliacte the universe by trying to under-complicate it.

    So since I have recently been on a Jamie Campbell Bower kick after of Stranger Things 4 and rewatching Sweeney Todd, I checked this film out on Netflix to see what was up. Was really shocked at how poor the reviews were; I mean yes, it's a pretty silly, predictable, Twilight-era, brooding supernatural teen movie, but I didn't think it was anywhere near the RT score of about 14%, like in my view it's a solid 35-40% as far as these films tend to go. At least some interesting things happened in the film throughout, unlike Twilight where most of the action only picked up in the final twenty minutes. For context, I didn't read Mortal Instruments so perhaps I won't see it the same as the readers, as I too know what it feels like to have a disappointing adaptation. (Also, side note: that part where Jace gets slammed into the piano following a dad joke was hilarious)
