@@spacepopeXIV Perhaps I presented my argument poorly. These 'drain unblockers' often do not solve the problem well, if at all. The customers frequently come back and buy another one, usually a different brand and very often a more expensive one, hoping for a different result. Sometimes they will even buy a third. Eventually they will seek more practical help eg. a plumber or handyman. I have used these products several times myself with disappointing outcomes and I worked at a supermarket which sold loads and loads and loads of them. The reason these cleaners sell so well is because, in real situations, they usually don't work. I apologise for not explaining myself properly in my earlier post.

Be very careful using sulfuric acid! About 40 years ago, I used it for my bathtub drain and ended up with hazardous materials people coming in their funny little costumes for safety. The tub pipe went down into the basement and out to the sewer. It was a copper pipe From 1939 and it had a pinhole in it that up until that time was no problem. But the sulfuric acid opened it up just enough to let all of the acid drip down and hit the cement floor which it ate up immediately. It made fumes and it was a mess. The fire department came with the hazardous waste people. I had to open all the windows in the house, because the smell went up into the house. We opened the bulkhead door to the basement and we couldn’t go back in the house for about three hours.

I tried everything for a year after we bought our house, eventually needed a replacement faucet and had the clog taken care of then. $1,200 usd and I had to patch a huge hole in my wall. About 2.5x the size they needed. The wall had a door and they could easily see where the plumbing was located.

I used a chamber of Green Gobbler the other day. To get rid of Avery bad clog in my tub. I left it for either half a day or overnight. It ended up getting it back to normal. I was this close in the store to buying Draino becwof the convenience. Glad I just ordered Green Gobbler instead of ruining my pipes even more. I also tried the natural ways beforehand. Like using baking soda & white vinegar, Dawn dishsoap & boiling water. None of those worked at all. It kind of eased my sink but that just continues to run slightly bad as always.

I almost never put drain cleaner in a toilet because yes it cannot get to the clog to start working and never plunge a toilet with drain cleaner in it as it will splash everywhere while plunging a toilet, best to pour it down another drain, let sit for required time to digest the organic clog and then rinse with hot water, if the clog is really bad, use a drain snake, best to know the schematics of the drain lines to figure out where the clog actually is so the plan of attack can be formulated to work best on where the clog is

I usually just buy the cheapest local noname chlorine+sodium hydroxide+surfactant drain cleaner available, using it 2 times with hot water, then finishing with a plunger. More than enough for most generic non-serious clogs, and not as much of a risk for the pipes involved as with concentrated acid. If you can't find an affordable option for a cleaner with this formula, you can also very easily make it yourself, since the aforementioned chemicals are among the cheapest and most widely available.

the sulfuric acid in those heavy duty drain cleaners .. destroys cast-iron drain lines , especially if the system has a dip or fish belly as we call them .. Best bet for a home owner if they can’t clear it with a plunger or boiling soapy water is to call a plumber and have them run a cable ..

@@RogerWakefield The drano removes the hair clog but leaves the sludge clog to collapse in on self causing another sludge clog blockage. I clean 8-10 drains a day. I'm trying to bring forward a issue I'm seeing and needs to be brought forward to the customer and not mislead them. A hand held snake is the best option. We have to protect our plumbers, customers and environment.

If the clog is in the p trap then thats an easy fix. But most likely it's the pop up assembly that needs to be cleaned. And if that isn't the clog go buy a snake. Much cheaper than paying for a plumber.
