I run the Ridgid K-5208 machine with the 7/8 and 1-1/4 cables. That's all I do is drain cleaning. No plumbing, repairs, installs, none of that! I only do residential, and I love it. I charge $300.00 up front before my machine comes of the truck. I'll basically use the 7/8 cables for everything except roots. If I'm hitting roots, then I will switch over to the 1-1/4 cables. One time I was in a rush and hit roots, the 7/8 cable jumped up and wrapped my glove and grabbed my pinky. Thank God my gloves are loose fitting and I escaped with no injuries! Scared the poop out of me lol! It was a lesson learned, but never forgotten.

It's true, these drain snakes can be dangerous. Found that out the first time I used one in 2014. I had rented it. I had watched a number of KZread videos on how to use one but still, things can happen and they did. Cable wrapped around my wrist. Used it on my own property as a DIY. Now I have the same Vevor machine as depicted in the video. Works great.

Much less the time to find parking and drive there from the shop in traffic. If you had a helper with you, double that time. You’re looking at at least four man hours here, I’m thinking.

There is a handle locking pin on a k5208, while I was running the machine the pin wiggled through the slot and locked the machine in the on position. About that time the cable bound up and tried to wrap me up. I was lucky enough to get out of the loop it threw, it took about 5 seconds to get the machine unplugged. It ruined 2 cables. Spot on regarding the serious dangers when not using the right gloves or for running it too fast also . Slow and steady is the key and now for a real story . Worked maintenance for a large HOA complex with attached units with shared waste lines . It was ALWAYS SOP that if snaking out one bathroom , another maintenance man HAD to be in the adjoining bathroom in case the snake found it’s way into the adjoining units lines . Well for some reason the guy who was supposed to be next door with walkie talkie stepped out to have a cigarette . The snake didn’t drop down into shares waste line but instead went up and into the other unit , came out the toilet bowl and proceeded to flop around that bathroom until it broke very expensive glass tile that was on the walls , broke vanity mirror and was a disaster . The homeowner had allowed access but left for work , imagine their shock when they got home and saw the disaster caused , now imagine if someone was actually sitting on the toilet . Talk about a rectal exam 😊

Luckily the guys who taught me always told me to be extremely careful when using a snake, they made it seem like it was just a metal death hose that would tear u to shreds if u even touched it. I never got hurt using a snake but i did have a scary incident once where i was snaking a toilet drain and my snake was a spartan 300 so since it had a self feed i was standing next to the drain and letting the cable feed itself. I guess i was standing too close but the snake grabbed a hold of my pants and tangled around my leg and that shit was strong as fuck it almost knocked me over. Luckily my helper was there and he put it in reverse and saved my ass. Snaking is dirty work, dangerous work, it can be hard work because you have to carry it around and it probably weighs over 100 pounds. Most plumbers hate snaking and a lot of guys wont even do it, this is why it costs so much to snake. If the client doesn’t wanna pay he can find somebody else to do it. Also make sure if you have to pull a toilet or take apart a p-trap you charge for that as well because guess what if you do it for free and they leak after you just lost money. Oh and if you snake it several times and it wont clear and you have to jetter it that doesnt mean you dont charge for the snake, its not your fault that the drain is clogged and you snaking it was a legitimate attempt to clear it so if it doesn’t clear still charge the customer but give them an offer to jetter their line and if they dont wanna pay full price for the jetter then give them a discount on the jetter or collect your money for the snake and get out of there.

You know that your industry sucks when people accuse you of undercharging even at a rate of $400/hr. Stop listening to crooks and charge people what you think is fair to both of you. If you are willing to overcharge people, then they should be equally willing to underpay you; perhaps give you half of what you billed for. And, yes, I worked in the trades for over a decade full-time and another 2 decades part-time.

I'd add some more welds on the cap the blades attach to, they like to fall off on cheaper cables. Not fun trying to fish one back out of a drain line.

Here's the problem with that and the way these jobs a priced. I work building maintenance and I'm well-versed in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. So issues that arise at my home and my rental properties I save thousands of dollars by having the know-how and the tools to do the work. It cost me $1000.000 for a main drain line sneaked and camera. It was for a rental property and it was on a weekend. It had to get done right away because the renters were having a party. It was a matter of having the equipment to do the job. I have access to a drum snake but not at that time. I snaked many drains in my career and I avg an hour to clear a drain. What a plumber changes to snake a drain is a complete ripoff, in my opinion. Same thing with replacing a standard toilet. They charge $500.00 to replace a toilet, that's just labor. I'm NOT talking about roughing in a toilet, I'm saying just to replace. It takes me less than 30 minutes to replace a toilet. I would charge a friend $100.00 and a six-pack for labor.
