Razorclaw was my childhood favorite Beast Wars figure. It's kind of ridiculous how over the moon I was for that little crab. I even had him seize control of the Predacons from croc-Megatron for an hour or so.

He was one I missed. Don't know why. Do have Legacy Tasmania Kid though, so appreciation for the design has grown. For me though Clawjaw was the best scout of the year. A real oddball animal, like Snarl, that has a neat transformation, and the tentacles kinda being wings in robot mode works really well.

Finally some praise for Cybershark! Best BW Deluxe toy for me. Airazor was my first BW toy and I loved it from the gimmicks and look the little figure had. Manterror is definitely underrated, very posable toy for the time and the perfect companion to Cybershark (You could even interpret him as the Joker to Cybershark's Batman). B'Boom is great all-around, great articulation and look. Magnaboss and Tripredacus are easy choices but I will always prefer Magnaboss because the combined mode looks better. The only head-scratcher here is Bonecrusher, he has a good design but the missile gimmick limits his head articulation and doesn't lock his neck. Other than that, solid list and I hope we get updates for all of these toys.

Managed to get Apache and Bighorn pretty cheap (at least compared to ebay) off Mercari via Buyee, so now I just have to track down Jetstorm. My Top Ten for 1997, there actually wasn't enough figures this year to ignore the Basic class like I did for 96. There were a few repaints I had to ignore. And of course this was the year Machine Wars started which were just a bunch of Repaints of Euro G2 toys so it's actually a little slim on brand new molds. 10. Spittor: He's a frog... and I think the Diver version of this mold has a better color scheme. I know he's suppose to be a poison arrow frog but I looked up pictures of the actual frog he's based on and they come in variety of colors and patterns I'm just not seeing any that look like him. Especially the repainted red version with the black tech detailing painted on that definently doesn't look organic. Decent mold just never liked the colors. 9. Manterror: Some how I have a feeling this guy will end up on TJ's list some where too just a question of where he'll be placed. 8. Airazor: Again trying to keep my bias for the show out of it otherwise she would be higher but as a toy I think there are better figures. 7. Razorclaw: The first crab before we got Rampage and I actually kind of like this little crab guy. Side note, I did not even look at the translucent version of this mold. I was looking at the more realistic looking version for my list. It's still a good mold either way just personal preference which color scheme you prefer. 6. Snarl: AKA Tasmania Kid... thanks Legacy for using the Japanese name rather than the American one. 5. Bonecrusher: I always thought the head on this guy looked weird. The face does look a little better in the Beast Wars II cartoon than it does on the actual toy but still a decent looking figure. 4. Cybershark: I never had this toy when it originally released but I did pick up the reissue and other than a loose ball joint where one of his fins keeps popping out every time I barely touch it I love this figure... plus I love sharks so of course he's high on my list. 3. B'Boom: I actually did have this figure when it came out... never liked the weird 3rd mode it has. To be honest I was never even sure what the alternate robot head was for cause I don't remember ever seeing it in the instructions. Apache was the one that really made that a thing in Japan but I was just confused why there was an extra head there. Also because of the tall shoulders and the coloring, I always imagined him as Beast Wars Ultra Magnus. Some how Ultra Mammouth got that role just for the pun but B'Boom actually looks like him. 2. Tripredacus: Technically cheating cause it's 3 figures but I had this set as a kid. 1. Magnaboss: The other combiner set I did not have and always regretted. I meant to get both but could only afford one and went with the other set for reasons I can not remember only to look back and realize... Magnaboss just looks better as a combiner having actual hands and a sword. I don't know what the weapon Tripredacus is holding is suppose to be. By the way I love the fact that their weapons also combine, I don't think any other combiners before this have done that and FoC Bruticus did it years later but it's such a rare thing to engineering for the weapons to combine as well. I really want a modern Magnaboss in the Kingdom style but all we got was Skywarp/Silverbolt from the Airazor mold which doesn't combine with anything. Or at least reissue the original set, maybe with inflation it'd be better to release them individually now days rather than in a box set cause I don't know if I could afford the inflated price unless they're released one a time. Next year is going to be really hard to narrow down because it's the start of some really good Japanese exclusive molds from Beast Wars II, Fuzors, and Transmetals.

Character aside, Inferno is just okay. Nice spring-loaded mandibles, firing missile with said missiles storing/doubling as the ant's rear legs, and the abdomen opening up into a spinning jet is definitely interesting. But that spinning jet is a pain to get to work without something bumping into the panels, (either your hand or the middle ant legs the toy does basically nothing with) and the transformation is basic despite being a Mega class. But you're certainly free to put him on your own list of best of '97. He's definitely better than Transquito.

A crying shame Jetstorm and B'Boom weren't part of the Beast Wars reissues a couple years ago. Either their molds were unavailable or the line did so poorly Hasbro canned it before they got to them. Likely the former considering RETRAX of all things did make it into the reissues, and I don't think there was really anyone clamoring for him.
