Things just don't phase him he is like the mythological equivalent of the kid at the playground who just makes themselves immune to everything ok the fly

This is the most unfair episode ever. In a series called “death battle” they have Sun Wukong… an immortal being who fought the heavens and COULD NOT DIE vs Hercules a mf who died.

Aside from the immortality perk, they weren't that far off in strenght, yes Monkey is a far more versatile character with hundreds of tricks and abilities, but the raw stats were close. Want a truly unfair battle? Look no further than Flash vs Quicksilver, lol. Omniman vs Homelander would also be there, but that battle was specifically designed to be unfair and was more so to see the characters' reactions.

In every other mythology battle, Herc's hydra arrows would have been an instant win But against Wukong, each arrow would only kill one of his many immortalities and even then, there is a huge chance that a clone gets hit instead Herc simply doesn't have enough arrows to win this

@@EthanPence-mj2yo Wukong can just dismember him , remember that Zeus could *not* grow back his tendons after his battle with Typhon , meaning dismemberment would stop him . Wukong could also just make infinite clones of himself to jump Zeus & he is done for . Greek gods only scale to planetary level power , that’s it .

Technically Wukong did die in his sleep once. But when he was brought to the kingdom of death, he filed a complaint and then simply crossed out his own name from the registry of life and death, effectively undoing his own death and granting himself another dose of immortality.

Heracles never really became a god. The same with Achilles. And by power he isn’t even top 10 in the Greek pantheon vs wukong who is probably the strongest god of any Asian god. We’re not even talking about Odin, Zeus, hades, Poseidon, Thor, Loki, ares.

Spoilers but The fact that Monkey King has Over 9000+ levels of Immortality in a "Death Battle" had me wondering how this would reasonably go & I'm not surprised lmaooo

I think they did it to tread the waters first before considering other myth vs myth DB’s. Best to start with the most well known and inoffensive ones, right? Plus this is probably as close as Superman V Goku 3 we’re going to get for the next while, considering Herc and Wong are the ultimate inspirations for them.

to add a bit of lore, the ruyi jingu bang was originally called the 定海神针, which directly translates to “godly needle that pins the sea” and upon its removal the entire sea turned to chaos

Not sure if anyone else said this, but the staff isn't just some random, unwanted pillar. It was put there by one of China's great mythological kings that solved the flooding of the Yellow River. Without it, the seas instantly started raging. Honestly, I'm not sure how they fixed it afterwards.

No, not parthians but Hellenic states that existed around the Indus Valley. They even fought the Chinese. In fact it is believed by some experts that Vajrapani the bodhisattva who guarded Buddha and others who aspire to be bodhisattvas, as well as the spiritual patron of the Shaolin temple was, at the very least, inspired by Heracles. This is due to the fact that some of the oldest depictions we have of Vajrapani is depictions of him as the Greek demigod in question.

I actually did a project on this for Art History in University, I focused on the Hellenistic influence on the art of the Indian subcontinent due to Alexander’s invasion, which had reached Ghandara, a part of what is today Pakistan. Prior to this, all statue depictions of the Buddha are symbolic (an eight spoked wheel, or the Buddha’s footprint), after Alexander’s war, Ghandaran style of art was born as they implemented Greek design features such as an realistic/idealistic statue proportions (big buff warrior dudes, elegant pretty ladies, etc), this is why we now have statues and other art that depicts Buddha in person rather than a symbol. Then this artstyle spread east as Buddhism also spread

Hercules is just the Roman name with slightly changed parts, which is no different than how various iterations of Superman are just the same character with slightly different power limits or slightly changed histories. So no, that wouldn't work. Also, I'll say right now that if you were telling a joke, then you need to work on your humor skills, buddy. Sorry.

Ok, whoever had the idea of doing a myth battle needs a raise, this was such a cool episode and there's so much potential for more matchups like these in the future.

I mainly just like the unique storytelling style of the fight. Having the fight happen like normal, but with one of the "Legends tell of a..." type of narrator to...narrate some moments of the fight. This style by far makes it unique already, alongside the fact that unlike most incarnations of gods we've had in Death Battle, these two aren't from any franchise but from the very myths all those others are based from. This will certainly be one of the most stand-out battles they've ever done.

Even when I am Greek and seeing Hercules lose, I completely understand how and more importantly why Wukong would win and I am not even mad about it. An amazing Death Battle overall Edit: I can't help but imagine Hercules and Sun Wukong actually being friends instead of fighting, even if Hercules would be annoyed every once in a while

This fight could be compared to Saitama vs Popeye. If you've read some of the stories in Journey to the West, fighting Sun Wukong is like fighting against a cartoon character. In fact, Wukong would be perfect for a Looney Tunes-esque series.

Sun legit took like six different immortality pills. He first learned immortality from his teacher, he then erased his death from "death note" then he ate some divine peaches and ate food and drank the wine of the gods. Crazy how they even nerfed Sun Wukong for this battle. His 72 Earthly Transformations grant him each a extra life. Everytime you kill him he gets stronger and stronger until his final form. On top of that he has 87,000 hairs on his body that he can make clones out of. He assembled a army of just himself over 10s of thousands in man power all equal in strength. This was light work for Wukong

Quick correction , that’s not how Wukong immortality works , while a lot of people like to think that his immortality is linked to his 72 transformations , that’s not how it works . If that were the case , Wukong would not have tried looking for more immortality , since he already technically attained it . The 72 transformations are just his shape shifting abilities , not the layers of immortality he has

Also Wukong does not get stronger and stronger every time he is killed ,Chinese mythology isn’t a video game RPG lol , I think what u mean is that the time when heaven tried to execute him in Lao Tzu deimmortalizing furnace , he burst out of it with his eyes now fiery golden and able to see through disguises . That’s the only time Wukong revived with a new ability , other times he revived , he was simply back in fighting shape without any other boosts

Actually heaven didn’t send people to drag him to hell , he was dragged to hell because it was his time to die. Which he obviously wasn’t happy about and so crossed his name out of the book of death

I want a series of this. Despite his berserker methods, Heracles was no less a prince with royal upbringing, thus he could likely be very straight to the point and focused, whereas Wukong is endless energy and spite, making these two the ultimate trickster and straight man. Their personalities rebound off one another perfectly.

@@StarWritterSW Nah, his original mythos is older (by like over a thousand years) but in story Herc was like 70-80 when his mortal half died and he ascended to godhood, whereas Wukong lived for hundreds of years before the JTTW even started, albeit he spent most of it trapped under a mountain

@@kinjorex101 he spent 300 years on his own even before being trapped under the mountain with the seal for 500 years. Also the mountain only kept him trapped because the buddha placed a magical seal ontop of it, otherwise he could just snap the mountain to pieces.

This is definitely one of my favourite recent death battles. Looking at their original myths written centuries ago was such a great idea. I'm a big mythology fan so it was awesome to see although myths brought back into this versus setting. And the animation was Stella as well I love the ink effects and the fact they were literally fighting on a scroll. Really an excellent episode

Yeah I greatly enjoyed the asthetic used for the fight. And the narrator using a ryme scheme for talking, ties in to using rymes for story telling the the old epics.

I have one issue with the scorpion venom that affected Wukong. The scorpion gained power from the goddess that put the crown on him. So I always assumed that the reason it COULD poison him when nothing else seemed to be able to was because it was from the same power source already sealing him.

possibly, but regardless the poison wasnt able to kill him anyway, it just hurt like hell so he needed help getting rid of it since it caused so much pain, but it wasnt able to kill him

I love how during the whole fight, hercules was trying so incredibly hard, while sun wukong was laughing and joking around, and still beat the shit out of him.

i loved the reaction of Herc when Sun make heads appear. "Multiple heads.....of course...."

An interesting thing is that the '72 transformations" lets him transform into anything. The number means that he has 72 lives to spare, so even if Hercules was able to penetrate the 1000+ layers of immortality that Wu Kong has, he would still have to kill him 73 times before the dude die. So yeah... Hercules has no chance of winning this one.

and one thing not mentioned here is the treasures that Wu Kong wore. Like the armor that literally makes him immune to most attacks (not like he needs it, but still an extra layer of armor) and the boots that literally can make him fly and walk on the clouds (again, he doesn't really need it but an extra nonetheless). and also the ring circlet that was (forced) given to him to follow the monk, that think is indestructible and only Buddha can destroy it (iirc). That's why by reaching enlightenment and became Buddha, Wu Kong also freed himself from the circlet.

And the clones can be anything or anyone. Either matching the opponent exactly or being someone stronger. Heracles never stood a chance in this competition, no matter how many times they run through this battle.

the style this time? SUPERB! loved how the fight was in a painted scroll and narated, the artist and animator that did this are the MVP, give them a bonus please. also love the dynamic of the two. "you had your fun" and wukong is just like a free spirited youthful child playing, while Herc being patience with him.

I wonder how they're going to scale Wukong jumping to the edge of the universe and back with...basically no effort.

In my opinion by far the best visual and dramatic style you managed to use yet. Really a beautiful cartoon during the fighting scene.

Well Baldur would most likely win imo, since it'd be a lot easier for Baldur to hit Achilles everywhere until he found his weakspot than Achilles finding out Baldur is only weak to mistletoe, fashioning a weapon out of mistletoe, and killing him with it.

@@Addlexx I think that in terms of "invulnerable mythical heroes", Siegfried would be a fairer match for Achilles than Baldur, since Siegfried's weak point is a lot more similar to Achilles', and can more reasonably be struck in combat

One thing about Heracles you forgot. He was the destined hero to save the gods from the collossuses. Zeus even told Hera and got together with Heracles's mother, without Hera's blessing but with her accepting that this was nessecary to defeat the colossuses.

Well that's an interpretation. A later one, a roman one if I remember correctly. They're going by the original myths, or at least the oldest we know. which is hera very much NOT agreeing to this, killing his mother, and constantly attempting to kill him. Zeus had to incubate Hercules inside his leg just to keep him alive. The name "Heracles" was an attempt to sate her, it did not work and she kept trying to kill him the rest of his life.

This was a very well styled episode!

As much as I wanted Heracles to win, I knew he couldn’t beat someone as OP as the Monkey King

Regardless of outcome, the presentation and styling of this fight was so good - from the narration style to the way it takes place on a scroll? Very nice.

Wukong likes to toy around with his food. And the fact that he was laughing his ass off the entire fight says all you need to hear about the fight.

Although Sun Wukong actually has uncountable more feats and gimmicks that aren't mentioned, and having personally grown up from asian folk lore, I'm just deeply impressed that Death Battle actually nailed 齐天大圣's lore right on the head. Definitely wasn't expecting that!

Munchkin: Sun Wukong's abilities are utterly over the top. Small list of examples: Flying on either a magical cloud or by turning somersaults that propel him several tens of thousands of miles with each turn, changing into 72 different shapes, being able to change his hairs into different shapes (such as dozens of miniature versions of himself to help fight), see through illusions of all sorts, Super Strength, can't die due to a mixture of having crossed himself out of the Book of the Dead and eating immortality substances before being baked in a divine furnace, and is able to see for miles. And then there are his abilities to see through illusions, disguises and transformations, manipulate the wind, part the waters, create barriers, summon gods, walk through fire unharmed, survive underwater, pass through metal and rock, walk on Solid Clouds, freeze any kind of creature, including demons and gods, or make them fall asleep, have horses listen to his every whim, learn new spells with just a few glances and the bare minimum of instruction and open any lock. Wukong also has great knowledge of medicine and his 72 transformations actually allow him to take the form of anyone and anything, including growing extra body parts and transforming other objects by spitting his blood on it. Wukong can go as far as turning objects into living beings and then using them as puppets (though they lack souls. Movement and speech needs to be programmed into them). Add in Wukong's indestructibility plus his ability to fly across the Earth with a single somersault and you've got the most bizarre/awesome set of powers in classic literature

Fantastic! The choice to go into the original myths was definitely the right one. The battle was very professional and seemed like a separate story in itself rather than just a fight scene. Great work!

The death battle was amazing in this one. The narration and animation style worked fantastically.

"Multiple heads... of curse." Hercules is tired of these "boss battles with two or more health bars" XD Hydra was already a pain in his ass

Out of all the Death Battles they’ve done this year, to me, this takes the cake as the most innovative and inventive so far. I love the amount of clever callbacks they’ve made to the myths for the both of them. And they perfectly captured how both deities would act upon meeting each other.

He basically have a power where one strand of his hair can be a version of himself which is as strong as you except if you are the jade emperor, buhhda,and etc. Also hey mat had said this in the video but I didn’t watch it yet so ya.

This was one of the most creatively designed fights ever on Deathbattle. The way the scrolls moved up and down as the fight progressed, the traditional art design, and the okami-style whorls of paint as Sun Wukong fought. Well done guys! Props to the art team for a memorable episode

Animation and Match-up wise, this was Definitely one of the MOST EPIC if not the most epic death battle Ive seen,

I could listen to Wiz and Boomstick talk about mythology all day.

HUGE props to Death Battle for trying something new with this one. Sucks that it was a bit of a stomp, though. No matter how strong or tough Heracles could be, Sun Wukong's arsenal was simply infinite in nature. Maybe if he fought Darkseid, we'd have a fight on our hands to talk about.

I mean, this is a dude that has an argument for fighting superman. Both have infinite strength, both have incalculable speed, etc. Superman is written to be the strongest, but Wukong is also the powerhouse in the JTTW. Plus, you know, immortality means being impossible to kill, so 1000x immortality is worse.

In his universe, superman is essentially the one solution to literally every problem, and I don't know all the stuff he has done, so I have no idea how close it would actually be, but IMO, immortality stacked 1000x is kinda broken in death battles

Actually the Staff is a mystery, it has about 4 interpretations just for its creation and many more for its function. In short like Thoth in Egyptian mythology but with the Tao. Emphasis on ruling because so does the first Chinese mythological emperor.

I like how they brushed over Hercules being tricked into putting on a poisonous soaked shirt. He was very much taking after his father at that point and totally brought it upon himself.

The funny part is, Heracles went to the underworld to rescue the soul of his best friend's wife. Hades is actually a caring person and was touched by Heracles' wanting to help his friend BUT he could have done the same with his wife and kids. And didn't.

Hades wouldn’t have let him leave with his own family as it would have been a selfish desire. Risking the wrath of Hades for his _friend’s_ family however is a selfless act, as Heracles doesn’t get any direct benefit, unlike getting his family back

You know I wonder if Goku was more accurate to Sun Wukong do you think he might beat Superman because originally at the very beginning of the original Dragon Ball that was the case. Goku was originally a gag character until he was developed more.

@@Nameless82284 eh… The stuff that Monkey has can’t really hurt Supes, Supes can’t counter Monkey’s immortality. It would be a draw until Supes incapacitates Monkey. No definitive end.

@@templarw20 Well originally Goku was more of a gag character at the very beginning so if they kept that then Goku might win because you can't beat a gag character.

The Monkey King feels like some random animal just... cheated his way into godhood for the heck of it. He's not even part of the Chinese pantheon, he just FORCED his way into it! Just imagine if that monkey had shown up anywhere else in the world and pranked his way through some other pantheon.

It's even stranger, but yeah He is a kind of alien-god who is of no kind and basically bothers pantheons.

"Because on his other shoulder, was a whole other mountain!" Sun Wukong was literally that kid who said "well I can lift infinity+1!"

I love how Sun Wukong was having fun, almost as if nothing was at stake, but Hercules was too serious in the fight.

Sun Wukong has 72 lives even if Herc DID manage to kill him. In the mythos, Wukong absolutely loved fighting powerful opponents. So he really was having fun the whole time.

I kinda wish they used the Disney Hercules as the character they used for the fight part, it would have been a lot more entertaining.

So he has a personality similar to goku just a bit more cocky

I love how they try to tell more of a story in the fights now. It has made the whole show feel more complete.

Well if you think about it that's how Chinese and Greek movies are sometimes you have the narrator reading what's going on kind of creative if you ask me

I'm curious what other mythology fight we could get, personnaly I hope for Surtur vs Typhon, but I'm curious about other possibilies.

Tbh, I like if they make more death battles that pins two gods against each other like this one. Is a bit different from the usual themes of content:P

This was one of the most stylistic and creatively animated battles ever. Please do more mythology battles with quality like this one, I loved it!

My favorite part for the stylistic choices for this fight would have to be a tie between the use of what looks to be ink strokes with mostly Sun Wukong’s attacks, and the music.

It's been years since this came out. Jesus Christ, it felt like only a couple of weeks

If they do more mythology death battles, they should do Jormungandr vs Apophis. A giant sea serpent who fought Thor thrice vs a giant cobra who wants to devour the sun. Death Battle, please make this a thing.

How about Zues vs Ra? Both are "Sky Fathers." Odin is missing the "Sky" bit, but all three are also warriors. Just Ra and Zues have "Sky"-like elements though. Ra is more associated with the Sun, and Zues storms & lightning, but the "Sky" nonetheless. Odin vs Athena would be interesting. Both are war gods, wisdom gods, and gods of craftsmen; Odin more of poetry and magic, while Athena is of weaving, architecture, and defensive weaponry. Both are seen as strong, but not the strongest. (Odin being surpassed by Thor, his brother, and one of his son's, if i remember correctly. Athena being surpassed by Zues and Heracles.) Thor vs Heracles/Zues would be interesting - though i think the Greeks take that one... In Ragnarok, Thor dies to poison, and Heracles has plenty. And, Zues is Zues. 🤣

I think Karna VS Achilles would be great battle. Both of them are some of the strongest mythical heroes of all time. Karna has a weapon called Vasavi Shakti, which is so powerful that it’s basically a world ending nuke from mythology, but Achilles has a shield made by Hephaestus that is said to be able to create an entire world to defend against attacks. The two are extremely great heroes and I think they would be a perfect matchup.

@@x-omnistar-x9602 Achilles’ shield depicts celestial objects on it but it’s just an image, I don’t think it actually creates them mid-battle. Oh, and his heel kinda ensures a world-destroying nuke would take him out.

Wukong has way too many haxs to fight anyone. He is almost impossible to defeat. So many layers of immortality mixed with all the different skills it's just way too much.
