I'm with you for 95% of what you're saying. The part where I diverge is the "without attitude" bit. Citizens are afforded certain liberties, which extend to having an attitude, aka expressing grievance, especially with regard to law enforcement and the government. We don't have to like it in order for us to recognize the principle at stake. Does the attitude help the situation? Usually, no. But expressing displeasure cannot be part of the justification for seizing someone. As for everything else, yup, you're on it. Step out of they tell you to.

I was unfamiliar with the area and the one-way sign was obstructed by a tree branch. I was at fault. I gave the officer all the paperwork he asked for and I told him I was unfamiliar with the area, I also said, ''I understand I was in the wrong, but in my defense, the one-way sign is blocked from view by a tree branch'. I expressed my ''grievance'' without an attitude. I was respectful and direct. He agreed with me about not being able to see the sign, gave me a warning and I was on my way.

This rings true to us because we understand that _how_ one says something is a major factor in what someone is trying to _express._ In your case, you chose to express your grievance one way. This person chose to express their grievance another way, with an attitude. Both are forms of expression, not just the words either of you said. The attitude _is_ the expression. It's a part of free expression that we are all supposed to be able to enjoy and preserve, even if you and I don't like her attitude/form of expression.

With people like this lady it’s always a matter of “principal” over street reality. If the cop has to repeatedly tell you to exit your vehicle, there is no further cause for discussion. Just be respectful when pulled over and COMPLY. Very simple. Hands on the steering wheel and roll the window down. You should always have license, reg and insurance at the ready. Giving the cop a hard time will NEVER benefit you. You're not going to win.

Wait, what? She got pepper sprayed, she wasn't just quenching her thirst. The amount of pain she was in probably induced shock. She deserved to be removed from the car and arrested but the use of pepper spray was completely unnecessary. Really poor discretion in the escalation of force. Break the window, yes.... pepper spray? Nope. Very poor judgement. He also lied to the other cop, she didn't throw the drink at him he knocked it out of her hand. That person should not be a police officer.

This is a perfect example of why high schools should teach a required class in how to deal with law enforcement. If you start with attitude and refuse lawful orders it's not going to go well for you. Some people watch too much TV and think that they can tell the officer how he's supposed to do his job. Then they ignore all warnings of what is going to happen and act surprised when they get the force part of law enforcement. 🙄

@@Bkdollasiaa I agree but far too many parents don't teach their kids how to act properly. All they teach them is "F the Police!" because they view them as the enemy. So they start off with the attitude and it goes downhill from there. Then, having never learned that actions have consequences, they still think that they are being victimized. The officers can explain the law and show them how they are committing whatever infraction multiple times and they still don't get it. I don't know how to fix the mess but, we damn sure have one.
