Her Husband Left Her, Now She Lives Like This... | Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners
This week, Hayley travels to help out 39 year old Shereen, who last cleaned her flat a year ago. Due to her lack of cleaning, her mum no longer visits her due to her flat being so messy! Meanwhile Penny is going to spend four days helping clean and de-clutter the two bed home of Paul and Elaine. Paul is a self-confessed shopaholic causing Elaine to have a constant fear of tripping or falling over all the clutter that he buys! When their grown up children come to stay, they have to sleep in the caravan on the drive because there is no room in the house!
Half a million of Brits change our bed linen just three times a year. Yet there is a group of Britons who wage a constant war on dirt and order. This brand new series follows Brits who - by their own admission - are so obsessed with cleaning they can't relax if there is a spot on a tap or a rain mark on the windows!

A lot of empathic women who are married to high functioning autists, hoarders, narcissists and other types with control issues end up with auto-immune disorders. Doctors are starting to recognize that as a 'side effect' of being high empathy, living with a person who is low or no empathy.

Every single person in this show should get professional help. That high heels woman is inhaling bleach and detergent boiled fumes all day. Just because her illness is more productive that doesn't means it's better. OCD impacts one's life quality and the relationships around them too.

That's great! What Hayley did for Shereen brought tears to my eyes. I know very well how she must have felt when she first entered the flat. I've felt that way too. Panic attack, germs entering your psyche and the urge to run.
I haven't watched the entire thing yet, but I think the main problem with Paul is that he needs the support of a professional hoarding team. You can't really expect random people who like cleaning to be able to change everything in a household just by chucking things out. I know that's the premise of the series, but as a person who gets professional help with cleaning my surroundings, I realize how important it is to actually understand where it's coming from. It's so much more complicated than throwing things away. Yes, his behavior is shitty. That's why he needs a professional to work this through.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Penny did the best she could have in that situation, I think the yard sale was a great idea and I intend to try it on my own mother hah.😅 He definitely does need a whole team of professionals to teach him how to maintain this new lifestyle, environment, and also really tackle the psychological element of it all. Otherwise the pattern sadly continues. I stayed to watch the end because I was curious of the outcome and I’m quite surprised. So far, ‘their living room is clutter free and they plan to sell more of Paul’s stuff’. Hope the best for them honestly, especially Elaine. I know hoarding is a subset of ocd and I have ocd myself but I find hoarding to be quite selfish, which I’m saying from lived experience with a serious hoarder.

I’m very disappointment in Paul. He’s very selfish. His wife has an ailment and their kids have to live in a motor home outside of their home because of his hoard. They don’t want to deal with his “collections” after he passes. I feel like that’s super heartless of him to leave them with the burden of all that stuff to deal with while they’re trying to heal from the passing of their father. 😒😒
penny and elaine selling whatever they want while paul is "sick" is such a power move
I know a lady who visited her out of state grandaughter in the flat the grandaughter shares with two others. The OCD gran re-arranged the whole kitchen to her liking and when the poor flatmates got up in the morning to go to work they didn't know where their coffee, tea, utensils, lunch-packing materials, anything was. Ran them late for work. The house was nice and clean. The grandmother just can't go anywhere without compulsively 'fixing things up' the way she likes them- even things that aren't hers.

I feel bad for Paul’s wife. It’s frustrating to help people who refuse it but need it.
What many people don’t realize is that acts of hoarding and uncleanliness can also be major symptoms of OCD as well. While to some people these behaviors are silly or harmful, it must be noted that these stressors can be very real to those who struggle with them. My heart goes out to all of these people. ❤️
I feel bad for Shareen in the beginning. It takes a lot of bravery to ask for help to begin with, and Hayleys unmanaged ocd is making this task even more embarrassing then it had to be. Shes being judged for her house, her cat, and even possibly being poisoned by Hayley mixing chemicals. Her house isnt that horrible and wouldnt be that hard of a task for most cleaners (a big job, but not impossible or something to complain about.) I hope Shareen talking to Hayley and giving her her perspectives helped Hayley realize her ocd really isnt managed well at all. Its ok to have joy in cleaning, but extreme germphobia can be debilitating and feeding the ocd in this way is unsustainable. However if she does keep help cleaning peoples homes in can be therapeutic in a positive way since she will have to be exposed to things that are dirtier then her home will ever get. Pauls situation is also not being handled correctly, hoarding needs to be addressed with a therapist and the way Penny is attempting to deal with it is likely to make him just fill the house right back up again. No dig on penny though, she is sweet, just this is not the best way to handle this and it shows with him shutting down and running away.

Yes, the young woman who is so obsessive about cleaning products and wears a lot of make up in those high heels(I don’t see how you can work in those things?), you need to research cleaning products, dear!!! You inhale those fumes, and they are very toxic!!! and you can burn your lungs, etc. I am 75 years old and I have COPD… You can look that up on the Internet… It has to do with the lungs and breathing… my ex-husband, I remember was cleaning a wall in a large store with muriatic acid, and he burned his lungs!!! And we have to breathe the air in around us with all these vehicles, etc.. I think you may catch my drift here, yes?! This was a really good video, all of you!!! I am a bit of a hoarder from years past, but I have really come along way!! Thank you very much to any and all here!!!! ❤
My mom's coworker would obsessively clean their workplace (not what she was hired for) and it interfered with her actual work productivity and her job security to the point where it didn't make sense to have her work there in the first place--and I mean to emphasize that the place was already clean by regulatory standards. It turned out that she had some kind of medical condition with her thyroid that caused the such erratic behavior. Medical intervention pretty much stopped her peculiar (seemingly) OCD with cleaning. I'm sharing this story, not to say that's what is going on in the lives of the people shown in this episode, but because in some cases these kinds of behaviors can damage some peoples' lives, or the lives of their loved ones, subsequently. In some cases, medical intervention may help people to find a new kind of control over their own lives, rather than feeling controlled by the drive to clean obsessively. For any people out there struggling with this kind of thing, you may be able to work with medical professionals to pinpoint and manage these behaviors if you feel they're negatvely affecting your life.
Cleaning things that are Already Clean isn't really Cleaning.

Penny and Hayley are my KZread heroes minus the bleach Hayley as I also suffer OCD cleaning and organizing. Paul is selfish considering his wife Elaine is sick. Shame on you Paul! = Narcarcisstic Human. Shereen so glad your flat is Nice and clean. What a great video. Kindest thoughts from Australia x
Heyleys OCD is relatable to me, but luckily I'm not too too freaked out by germs... I have exposed myself too and can handle touching them, but knowing pets have sat on certain surfaces definitely irks me 😂😂
I love Haley, but it always amuses I seeing the pipes at the side of the loo covered in grime.
Bless OCD people and their journey towards balance.
Paul seems like a narcissist ... cares more about strangers wellbeing than his own wife who has MS.
I think I just realized I'm a hoarder too lol

And I'm an obsessive cleaner, lol!
9:26. Obsessive cleaners would see how filthy the walls and baseboards are.
Penny and Haley might be obsessed with cleaning, and it might be somewhat compulsive, but it isn’t Obsessive-Compulsive in the pathological sense. In order to be considered a disorder, it has to cause distress to the person suffering with it. That’s part of the diagnostic criteria. They do not seem distressed. People who have contamination OCD are miserable while cleaning. It ruins their life.

Maybe it's distressing because the compulsive need to clean is overriding the need to spend time with their family and friends? Idk, I'm just thinking out loud, lol. Must feel good for them to know that their ocd is providing an opportunity to help others live a happier and healthier life.
The younger lady who is at the Muslim lady's house, I don't like how she has treated her. Shaming her for her mental health is horrible. She needs help, that's why she reached out.
