In the game they make that much more obvious. He say "now Henry imma get that gun from you" and Henry starts to blame Joel to rationalize his actions and and turns the gun on Joel, and Joel says this is no one's fault. They also show Joel's face in the game and you can see in his face his reaction. He's also doesn't want to look Henry in the eyes because he knows what he's going through. Overall the actors did great but I think the games version of the scene was much more well done

That’s the idea - Henry is not a good person, neither is bad. His decision to snitch on Michael was understandable, but it was still bad. He killed another person for the person (Sam) he loved, that leaded to the resistance movement becoming violent and unjust, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Everything in the game/show is gray, that’s why it’s so cool

In the last moments of his life, Sam deliberately sits on his bed facing away from Ellie so that when he completely turns into an infected, he won't acknowledge her presence and attack her. Considering that Ellie is still alive well into the morning even as she's asleep in the same room as infected Sam, it actually worked, and Sam only attacks Ellie once she gets close enough and alerts him of her presence.

It’s actually a pretty smart take. In the game, Henry has killed before. So it makes sense that he’d have a different reaction to shooting Sam. He’s dealt with the reality of death, but he never thought it would be him that killed his brother . HBO Henry had never been violent in his life; it makes sense that he wouldn’t be able to even fathom that he was capable of killing his brother. That he just couldn’t compute it. Both totally distraught but expressed in different ways.

You "kind of" know how to cut human hair if you're a pet stylist. You "kind of" know how to treat humans if you're a Veterinarian. You "kind of" know where Long island is if you know where New York is. Broccoli "kind of" looks like cauliflower if you ignore the color. Clementines are "kind of" like Oranges in color and shape. Tomatoes are "kind of" like Hearts in that they both have 4 chambers. Falling isn't "kind of" like climbing. A book isn't "kind of" like a glass of milk A beef steak isn't "kind of" like a Salad. NY pizza isn't "kind of" like Chicago Pizza. The latter is clearly worse. You don't "kind of" have a happy ending when you have to watch your little brother turn into a zombie, attack you, kill him yourself then kill yourself in front of two other people who "kind of" cared about you, (see there's an appropriate use of that since they had to team up, you have to somewhat care about someone watching your back). This is literally their bad ending in any context. The exact opposite of a happy ending. Joel and Ellie's ending in Part one? THAT's kind of a happy ending. Ellies lives and Joel lies to her to keep her living. I would understand it if maybe the little brother only lost an arm or something because then they'd be alive and on their way. You know Brother blames himself for his little brother losing an arm, but at least they made it and will have another day to fight again. Survival at the cost of something close and that jazz, not literally dying and losing this cruel game of cat and mouse with a fungus.

As an older brother of 1 younger sibling with special needs, that relationship Henry has with Sam could be felt through the screen without them ever saying it directly. It's that "I need to protect him because his disability puts him in danger and without me no one can take care of him but at the same time without him i have no one to protect" sort of mentality. It hurts to think that one day, as older siblings of special needs kids, that our siblings may one day live in a world where we're not there to protect them or have any family they know to watch over them.

Reading into Henry’s final thoughts, with analyzing his facial expressions is so overwhelming to even imagine what someone might be thinking and considering in that moment. Value in this world is extremely personal in this post apocalypse world. Values are now the things that make the difference between necessity (things to stay alive) and emotional necessities like family, and friends. When Sarah died, Joel put his emotional value on Tommy. It’s the reason why Joel still cares about him. It’s the reason why he wanted to protect Tommy. He’s not only his little brother, but family. In this moment, we are watching Henry lose both his emotional and necessary value in a single moment. By shooting Sam, Henry took the one thing that made life worth fighting for. Seeing Sam’s dead body was both an overwhelming and incomprehensible act that blurred the lines between what is real and what isn’t. Henry also went into shock. Unable to comprehend what he just done. Henry took the only action that made sense to him. thematically, this also makes complete sense for the character, as Henry is someone who places the weight of the worlds problems in his shoulders. Henry was just a kid. A young man. A brother. He wasn’t a harden survivor like Joel or even Ellie. He was simply.. human.

Recall that he's technically responsible for literally EVERYTHING that's happened to Kansas City in the last two weeks or so; to get medicine for Sam's leukemia, he sold out the leader of the resistance to FEDRA, which both opened the door for Kathleen to take over AND develop one hell of a grudge against him, which ultimately ended with the whole QZ falling to the Infected. All to save his little brother...who he just shot dead. Methinks that he didn't just kill himself because he shot Sam. He killed himself because he has just realized that he doomed an entire settlement of (more or less) innocent people for absolutely nothing.

@@mattshinde3614 I think i would disagree with the idea that Henry doomed the settlement. I’ll start getting philosophical here but the true villain in this show is no one else but the cordyceps. This virus spread and destroyed any semblance of individual freedom that Henry may have had growing up. The reason why he had to sell out a high ranking insurgent freedom fighter, is because FEDRA was gatekeeping medicine for people that really needed it. Why was FEDRA gatekeeping? Because the united states gave total control to the disaster response agency. Why they do that? Because the government couldn’t control and stop the spread of the cordyceps. Since they couldn’t stop the cordyceps, the government went into total lockdown. Since they went into total lockdown/ quarantine, the government had to shelter themselves from the Cordyceps. Since they shelter themselves, the government grew weaker and individuals settlements were able to gain power and control over their individual FEDRA settlements. And it simply loops back on top. Henry was simply a survivor who like everyone else, wanted a reason to fight to stay alive. Sam was that lifeline. And he did what he thought was on his brother’s best interest. I don’t blame Henry, I don’t blame Kathleen, I don’t blame Joel, or Marlene, it’s a shitty world we’re no one truly wins. And Henry’s death is a reflection of that cruel nature. That we are all infected. Maybe not bitten and turned like a runner, but the cordyceps influence is on every single character. An obstacle that humanity couldn’t conquer. Death in physical form. It’s depressing thinking about it tbh. I hope that never happens to us.

How ellie thought she cured sam, how everything happened so fast without warning, how henry protected his brother for a brief moment and then shot him dead, and then commiting suicide. I thought this was better executed than the game. And even the original creator agreed. He was so intrigued with the fact that Henry had more work to keep Sam alive because he was deaf. He shot Sam as an instinct and couldn't believe what he had done. I think the show pulled it off better because Joel wasn't scared that Henry was going to shoot him but instead knew that he would kill himself which he ultimately did.

At first I was wondering why they made Sam deaf. Now, I'm more than likely wrong here, but it almost seems plausible that they done it so that they could play out this scene as close as it was in the game. If you think about when Henry shoots at Joel's feet when he tried to save Ellie, I think for the realism in the show it could have alerted Sam, causing him to run at Henry instead, but by making him deaf it gave us that brief pause when Henry looked at Joel, before eventually choosing to shoot Sam. Just that short couple of seconds has so much impact on the scene imo, which could have been lost if he were changed in any way. Again, I'm more than likely wrong, but it's an interesting thing to think about, hah.

Shock and grief is portrayed so beautiful tragic in this scene. Joel takes a moment to wrap his head around what just happened. He barely woke up, and everything just happened in a matter of seconds. Even after Henry shot Sam, the only words that came out of him where “Give me the gun Henry.” Over and over again. Joel probably wishes he could have said more to Henry, but shock paralyzed him. Ellie is emotionless. I wouldn’t doubt that she probably didn’t even hear Joel talk to Henry or Henry speak at all. Some words might of come to her, hence why she turns to face Henry, but Ellie went into a deep state of shock. Finally Henry. Henry was hyperventilating, and shaking uncontrollably. His mind was fixated on Sam’s lifeless body. He pointed the gun at Joel not to harm him, but to keep everyone from moving. He needed time to process what had happen. Finally, once everything starts to become real and comprehensive, it sends Henry to a dark state of mind that he saw no alternative besides death.

Damn I felt really bad for Ellie after this. She's charismatic and can joke around with Joel, but it's with Sam that she acts more like her age. Even if she's a few years older, it doesn't matter since they are both children after all. It's sad to think that she had to bury the first friend she made in a while, even though she grew up surrounded by death you know it affected her.

Some aspects of the game are better than the show but equally some parts of the show are better than the game. The demise of both Henry and Sammy had a lot more layers to it in the show. Sammy not telling that he's infected because Ellie put him at ease, rather than just not having the heart to tell anyone like in the game; and Henry killing himself made more sense in the show too because unlike the game where he ends himself simply for not seeing a reason to carry on; in the show he had to do some 'bad guy thing' to keep Sammy alive. A bad thing that ultimately amounted to nothing. That cocktail of guilt, confusion, sadness and grief felt like a much more fleshed out ending for him. You can hear it when he repeats 'What did I do?' before turning the gun on himself

It was so hard watching the show knowing what scenes are coming next. This was one of the ones I dreaded the most.
