Yeah I think this could have gone a lot differently if they'd been honest to them both and not just thrown Joel out (and they didn't even compensate him). It's clear that Joel isn't a man you mess around with. I'm not saying they got what they deserved, but their decisions definitely caused this incident.

EXACTLY. And it’s soenthing last of us sort 2 forgets-all to make Abby a more sympathetic chrcater. And also the fact that Joel MIGHT not have killed the doctor had he stepped aside. Like he LITERALLY pulled out a knife which was so stupid. The fireflies wants to think of themselves as the good guys, but they took advantage of a unconscious girl, didn’t tell her about what the surgery meant, then TOLD Joel while he was in custody about what it would do. At no point did the fireflies ever say “hey if this surgery goes wrong, we might have killed the only person immune to infection. Let’s take it slow, really exhaust all options, and give the patient time to consider all options. It’s not like we can really give the vaccine to the world at this point. Plus even being immune wouldn’t stop us from actually dying.” In fact, had they told Ellie and joel that “yes killing her is the only way to save everyone” and Ellie AGREED to do so-Joel might not have gone on an epic rampage. Why? Because it’s what Ellie would have begged him to not do.

It would have worked so much better than way. For Marline to honestly be doing it, not to save humanity (like Joel she's probably seen enough to question whether they deserve saving) but because it's what Ellie wants.

What's wild about this sequence is that Joel is expressionless while he wastes dozens of people, some armed and others not. He only shows compassion and emotional conflict on his face when Marlene has her gun on him, and this is revealed to be a ruse. He crunches up his face like he's conflicted, takes a long look at Ellie like he's thinking hard, and then looks desperately at Marlene like he's talking himself into trusting her. She lowers her gun, which allows him to aim the one he's holding in his right hand, concealed underneath Ellie. Against everybody else, he's able to get by with incredible aim and superior threat assessment, but when she has the drop on him he switches seamlessly to emotional manipulation. It's an absolutely cold blooded scene.

They really changed the context behind Joel's action here. In the game, Joel had 'some' hesitation before executing Marlene. He baffles a bit, and hastily finishes up his words as if he was trying to convince himself. In the show however, there is just no remorse or conflic in his words... He's cleaning up loose ends. Nothing else.

This scene reminds me so much when Joel was carrying her daughter when they were confronted by a soldier, this time Joel had a gun and didn't hesitate.

Marlene's further lie was that she was there when Ellie was born. She wasn't. Anna gave birth alone while protecting herself from the infected attack. Marlene got there after, then chickened out of killing Anna when she begged. Also she didn't do as Anna asked to give Ellie to someone who could raise her. Sticking Ellie in a FEDRA orphanage is not what Anna would have wanted I'm sure. Joel didn't give her any time to turn his head like Marlene did Tommy's.

By the way, it's good, but I wouldn't say it's "nearly flawless". There were some glaring issues with the series, including an overall lack of violence and infected, the changes to Bill's storyline and ridiculous characters like that hunter leader Kathleen. It was good, but it wasn't amazing like some people claim it was. Even now, after 10 years and numerous playthroughs, I feel more from the characters in the game than in the show.

Joel didn't lie to Ellie! They stopped looking for a cure, cause they were all dead 😃

Boy oh boy I can't wait for the internet drama when a trans kid kills Pedro Pascal. Notice how we've never really got any more from the world of TLOU? That's because it's ending is like GoT, it sucks. Seeing the drop in viewership once Pedro Pascal is gone is going to be interesting, because there really isn't much of a reason to watch the show past his death. Same as how most people now just stop at TLOU, because there isn't a sequel needed.

Man did Marlene screw this all up. Decides to murder a child without giving her a choice, then straight up admits to Joel they're going to murder her, then sends him away with just two guards. Despite knowing what he's capable of and knowing he clearly has a connection with Ellie. If this is the calibre of the Firefly leadership then they were never going to stand a chance of achieving anything regardless of what they found in Ellie's diced-up brain. Utterly incompetent, unethical and inhumane chancers.

Said the same to my daughter as we were watching it the first time. Joel was knocked out, just lock him up until it's all over. Or kill him. Marlene is obviously ruthless enough to do that. At least in the show she sends two guards with him. In the game it was just one.

Would the other children who'd been murdered / raped / infected as a result of a lack of vaccine consent too? Is Ellie's life and consent worth the life of a million other children? This is a extreme case where it could be argued that no consent is required. At the very least, it is not as black and white as you're saying

Instantly murdering her to dice up her brain made absolutely no sense regardless, from a medical point of view - and it showed the kind of people the Fireflies were. Clearly not the right ones to be attempting such a thing with that mindset. Also, claiming to want to save humanity and losing your humanity right at the very first step by murdering a girl without giving her a choice - those two things are simply not compatible. The Fireflies are the last people you would want armed with a cure, even it had been remotely possible.

The letter explained it all that the guys from episode 3 left him. Some people are out here to protect others and god help anyone who would try to take those people they protect from them.

What happened was a tough call. It was a slim to nill chance that Ellie, who was not even consulted, would save the rest of a humanity 20 years in to the shit storm. Plus Joel, having PTSD from the incident when his daughter was murdered justifies why he would do what he did. I'm not a parent but I would do the same and protect the ones I care for and love over a gamble in the dark any day.

People need to stop claiming the chance of making a cure was low. Not only is there nothing in the game or the show to suggest any doubt, but the writer of both said it would have worked. People are just making that up because they're desperate to justify Joel's actions when the whole point is that, while understandable, they are not justified and Joel is not a good person (our first clue was the confirmation that he used to be a goddamn raider, come on). It's no wonder the ending of the second game was so poorly received given that most TLOU fans have no media literacy whatsoever.

The build up to this scene is amazing. Joel went so far and experienced so much pain and loss. The moment he felt like he was losing Ellie this other side came out of him. I think it was always there, it was so damn brutal but you see that look into his eyes when he's staring straight ahead. He's dissociating. I know that because I have PTSD from trauma. The look Ellie gives him... she knows everyone is dead. *"I'm sorry."* Joel watching her is saddening but he couldn't let her go, after losing Sara. His tone was perfect the way he said, "You'd just come after her." This series is exactly like the game. I'm blown away by this. ❤

she had me until she said "we didn't tell her that'd we'd basically damage the brain for the surgery". i know ellie is still a child but she still deserved to know...

I'm so glad they brought back Merle to reprise her role of Marlene. I can't imagine anyone else, especially in this scene. We don't see her much, but damn she commands attention when she's around both in game and in the show.

And that's the total bulls**t the fireflies are supposed to be fighting against. And if you looked at it rationally there was a 0.0000001% chance killing Ellie would change anything unless they have killed other people that were immune before hand. The amount of research you would need on other cases of people immunity to the virus to create the vaccine. Joel is not the hero of the story his the antihero. But he was actually in the right saving Ellie. And the fireflies were just hypocrites.

The firefly’s never gave her the chance to volunteer, we know she would have. She would have asked to say goodbye to Joel and that would have been it. No one to blame but themselves. Easiest decision in the world if it was me.

Marlene just keep showing Joel mercy bc she understands his pain, she could’ve shot him in the back in this scene rip

I love how the sequence of events from Joel's perspective went from him waking up from a major injury, to being told he can't see his surrogate daughter and her her nonconsensual sacrifice, and within what? 5 minutes of coming out of sleep for a major injury goes "your going to chop my new daughter's brain up without even giving her a choice. K. Fuck around, find out", Slaughters a large group of (supposedly) hardened rebel soldiers, singlehandedly without being wounded, saves his daughter and Marlene shows up and is like "But, her choice." And I think Joel kinda hoped she'd show up. Fuck around, find out indeed.

First it was the Main Game, then it was the Alternate ending and now this. Nails it everytime. Now I want Pedro and her to recreate the Alternate ending.

I disagree with your statement, based on this version of Joel. In the game, Joel really is undergoing emotional turmoil and is conflicted with his decision making. That’s why he pauses before deciding to kill Marlene, because he took a moment to surmise her true intentions and work out the ultimate conclusion of sparing her. Marlene ultimately would have come after Ellie. But here, Joel is on autopilot. He doesn’t have any emotional conflict. He’s on the PTSD trip of a lifetime, induced by two decades worth of guilt and his inability to act. He doesn’t care to pause and decipher Marlene’s true intentions, because he’s a cold blooded killing machine here, willing to do anything to tie up loose ends. That’s why the line is so stoic.

To just heartlessly drug her and take her life without her consent, to deprive her of her choice, even though she would have agreed to it as others here have already mentioned, and also deprive her of the chance to say a proper goodbye to her best companion was a huge mistake. If the fireflies would have done it ethically, everything would have turned out the way they wanted anyway. If Ellie decided not to go through with it, then I could see them taking the steps they took and do it without her consent because that's the kind of people they are and their only concern is getting a cure by any means necessary, but Ellie wouldn't have done that. They got what they deserved for the choice they made.

SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US: PART II ======= “No matter how hard you try, no matter how many people you kill… she’s gonna grow up, Joel. And then you’ll die, she’ll leave… then what?” I love that Marlene basically summed up Part II.

What a performance by Pedro Pascale and Bella Ramsey - bravo to both for this series.

0:27 assessing the situation. He had the gun already prepared. He knew the outcome. Stealthy af.

God...DAMN. HBO absolutely killed it with season one. The storytelling, even with their tweaks to the existing narrative, was on point. Costumes on point. Set design on point. Soundtrack amazing. And Pedro's delivery of his performance as Joel is just perfect. This sequence in particular (his wholesale slaughter of the Fireflies as well as his cold-blooded murder of Marlene) was executed beautifully. It made for such a heavy episode. Even though I've played through that sequence a handful of times myself, it was no less impactful in live action. I find myself looking at this whole mess through the lens of "this could have *easily* been avoided". All Marlene and the Fireflies had to do was sit Joel and Ellie down to a discussion about what their research showed, and what they were planning to do with Ellie. The odds of her survival (if any), and then given Joel and Ellie time to discuss it among themselves and reach a decision. While what Joel did here was completely selfish and kind of evil, in his shoes I don't think I would have done any different. He was knocked over the head, woke up in a hospital and was told that Ellie was being prepped for surgery, and then told that she was going to die as a result of said surgery. And then he just...snapped. Was what he did right? Absolutely not. Would I have done the same? Absolutely.

Crazy how all this tragedy could have just been avoided with consent. If they had asked Ellie, she would have said yes, if they had given her a moment with Joel, he would have allowed it per her wish. I suppose its a reflection of humanity, even in the best of people or with the best intentions like the fireflies, one critical moral error led to the flickering hope of restoring the world vanish in an instant.

Gonna be the one to point out; the music. The music is "All gone (the promise)". The same music that plays when *SPOILERS FOR P2* Joel dies, and Ellie sits on his grave. I find it an amazing little detail that the scene that seals Joels fate ultimately, as he drives off and lies to Ellie after slaughtering the fireflies, is the music from his death in Part 2. Amazing detail.

It’s like frame for frame perfect. Incredible.

Having played the game it was a real trip seeing my brothers reaction to all of this, especially the ending. He was so conflicted and upset lol

Joel is certainly aware that, if given the choice, Ellie would sacrifice herself, and he can't risk that. And Marlene also couldn't risk giving Ellie the choice and then having her back out. It's such a tragic predicament.

I'm pretty sure that Joel won't face any repercussions in the next 5 years.

Ooff WOW, last shot was brutal. What Marlene said was so poignant, it was the right things, pretty shocking to realize he's at the end of his life and she will out live him, and she might die anyway before or short after him with hope lost. It's the crudeness of life, and even though he will die soon he can't go on living after losing another child. When he was feeling bad while listening to her it was because he was also probably thinking "shit! I'll have to kill her too".

Did anyone noticed how the ost from when Joel was buried is used here as he’s webbing the infamous lie to ellie, thus sealing his fate.

I like the addition of Ellie asking where her clothes are, it makes it more clear how Ellie doesn’t entirely trust what Joel says

I find it crazy how Marlene and the firefly’s never thought of taking a blood sample or anything before cutting open her skull because they were relying on a theory of the infection was growing in Ellie since she was born how do they not know the immunity she has is in her blood

Spending time with our loved ones is not a means for some ends, it's the end in itself. Purest bonds are those that are cherished being in the moment not pondering on the future outcome. Joel knows this new relationship with Ellie doesn't have any future, it will only end in pain and pain. But still he commits himself in this. Because love and emotions are not always driven by logic. Our innate human nature often prioritize emotional bonds over rational decisions. And also remember this is not a flaw or deficiency of character, we all do this in our everyday life. Emotion is what makes us human beings. Isn't it?

Each time I watch the scene where Marlene emerges down in the garage - no matter if in the show or the game - I can't help but half expect her to break into song... "Youuuu caaaan't taaake heeerrrrr!!!!" 😀

Honestly, Marlene DESERVED to get her brains blown out by Joel. I mean, she was an utter jerk to Ellie throughout the entire run of the series and showed no remorse in forcing her to undergo a potentially life-threatening surgery without even bothering to ask her. She acted like she had the moral high ground over Joel, when she never did. Plus, she would never have stopped going after Joel and Ellie. In the end, she had to go down.

That's what a father does.

Marlene: ... she lives in a broken world that you could have saved ... so what would she decide? Joel: *_my honest reaction_*

I can't think of anyone better to play Joel. What a fckn bang up job. Makes me fucking cry.

They saw the most fucked up in humanity. Humans may not deserve to all die, but they certainly don't deserve her sacrifice either.

I love how they used the og actor for Marlene

Marlene in the show knows how Ellie was born immune, so she could've just made more immune people if she's so comfortable taking lives for her cause.

Pedro pascals acting... superb 👌

The only thing that the show doesent do justice is how much they went through and the development of the relationship. The game really spreads this out and in the show they kind of skim over all the game events fairly quick so the ending was a bit eh... The show didnt feel like they had been through enough to justify his decision. Just my opnion

Both the game and the HBO series are stunning and well written, the soundtrack on this scene is beautiful

I watched this show with my parents and despite them feeling the right emotions, they didn't know that at this point in the game, I was emotionally devastated. I played both games and haven't played them again due to the emotional toll

I'm rewatching this because Im almost at that part in the game again. Fantastic game, fantastic show.

I never understood why guards are always like 2 feet away from the person theyre escorting: so easy to just turn and get their guns off line if you know what youre doing. Now, if theyre like 6 feet back, no attacker has the length to reach you melee, and they need atleast a step or two to get within range, while your bullets dont care whether its 2 or 20 feet, you aint dodging them. Sure, theres corners, but thats why you always double up on escort duty, and always keep your gun at the ready

The fact that Marlene uses the "What would she decide?" when in the opening she was asked by Ellie's mom to protect her and look out for her. Talk about salt to the wound.

Not really, Joel knows Marlene didn't give Abby a choice. Made it REALLY EASY to shoot her. Look at the comments here, everyone is on Joel's side. The studio messed up and made the Fireflies too much of a villain. Nobody is really going to care IRL that Joel killed Abby's father because of how incompetent the Fireflies are. This messes with any emotional contact we have with Abby, as we feel that her father's death was now completely justified for the audience.

Marlene had him. She had the drop on him. His back was turned and her gun was pointed right at him. All she had to do was pull the trigger and reclaim Ellie. She would need to find a new doctor and a new team of Fireflies, but she would have Ellie, the most crucial part of her whole endeavor. But she fucked up. She thought she could reason her way through to Joel. And he played along with it beautifully. He made it seem like her words were getting through. That he was finally seeing sense. But he was just buying time until her guard was dropped far enough that he could turn the tables and get the drop on her. If Marlene had been ruthless, she would have what she wanted. It would have cost her a lot, but she would have it. But in the end, the very thing she fought to regain is what ended up getting her killed. A return to human decency. Whether she would or could have succeeded is irrelevant. It was the thing she fought for. It was her endgoal. And she tried to lead by example and all it got her was a bullet in the head from a guy who was molded by the new world. Someone who didn't believe there was a way back, cure or no cure. But there was a way to hang on to family and that was what Ellie had become to him. It's ironic, in a way. If Marlene had been more like Joel, she would have what she wants, but she would lose what she wanted to become. She couldn't win.

Nah. the bullet could have easily gone through Joel and ricocheted into Ellie. Or he could have collapsed onto Ellie and her head might have been crushed on the concrete floor. Marlene knew she needed Ellie's brain to be alive and functioning right up until the surgery. Once the brain and benign Cordyceps died it would quickly become useless. She knew she had to convince Joel to leave Ellie behind, it was her only option. Other than letting him leave with Ellie and not confronting him at all (then hunting them down).

Even if they did the procedure, how would they even use the specimen to pass Ellie's mutation to everyone else? And even if they did, what would stop it from adapting(yeah, fungi can do what bacteria do to become superbugs)?

That's honestly again why a tiny shitty team of doctors in a tiny shitty lab couldn't be trusted with Ellie's life.

"What drugs?" She knows he's lying. She never asks him to tell the truth. She backs him in a corner with "Swear to me..." I think in the end, she decided to live with the lie.

Didn't Mando kill a bunch of Tusken Raiders to save Grogu? If so, this sort of thing is to be expected.

All of this slaughter could have been avoided if the Fireflies weren't dumbasses and let Ellie know what was going to happen and let her talk to Joel.

It is their fault taking away Ellie’s consent. She would’ve said yes, but not giving her the option is absolutely horrific.

None of this would've happened if Marlene had just let Joel talk to Ellie before putting her under and killing her. She would've been strong enough to tell Joel that it's okay to let her go now, and that would've been what he needed to leave. The Fireflies didn't trust the mercenary they hired, despite how dependent on him they were, and despite how dependable he was the entire journey. Sure, Joel didn't trust anyone here either, but that's Joel. You lose your ability to trust when you see someone shoot the people you love in front of you, I'm sorry, ideas like "What should happen" don't matter after someone murders the people you love. It's like the story of Vitaly Kaloyev. He got his revenge and now resides a free man in Russia, not just exempt from retribution himself but a hero of that nation. That's the sort of exemption from the cycle of violence you can only get before the post apocalypse. If you still cling to these ideas of justice having its reign over the world, it's because you haven't seen anything like your family and children all dying because some idiot was pulling double shifts on air tower control in your life. Most people don't, it's a good thing, but it makes you an alien in this world as it truly is. People in positions of authority, who do evil because they are convinced they operate as a force of good, as the fireflies do here, get away with it over and over and over again, whereas Joel will continue to have his good deeds punished until he fucking dies. I don't care, saving a little girl from being murdered on an operating table is a valid and viable goal in the post apocalypse, they should have fucking let Joel and Ellie talk to each other to avoid just this scenario. In the end, they're all just fucking goons, the fireflies, the US military, FEDRA, Joel too. The difference is, unlike the raiders, unlike the fireflies, unlike the US military, unlike FEDRA, Joel doesn't murder kids, and yet like them, he gets exactly what he deserves for his lifetime of violence. (oh spoilers for S2 this doesn't have a happy ending unless they change the season 2 plot between Abby and Ellie to end with them fucking once she's down from the cross instead of fighting. You might even say he gets what he fucking deserves, (with a side of aslaveobeys)). The only mistake Joel made was not killing them all. The fireflies, if they had produced a cure with this, would use it to assert their position as the most powerful gang in the wasteland. They'd upmark that shit like insulin times a thousand. They'd have to to get the money needed to fund facilities and protection for those facilities to make more. This isn't the death of the most humanitarian organization to ever exist, it's the abortion of the mightiest post apocalyptic gang to exist since FEDRA. Because he didn't, he's fucked, Ellie's fucked, Abby's fucked for years instead of getting fucked with a bullet to the future six pack, Ellie's lover is fucked. Remember, the only way to break a cycle of violence is to kill them all or forget them all, and humans do not forget their enemies. I'm so fucking sad they cut down the interrogation and just had him see a sign earlier.

Marlene was in my opinion not much different than all the raiders or even the cannibals they encountered. To willingly sacrifice a child she's known since birth, that to me is the absolute worst.

Anna *_trusted_* Marlene with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) with her dying breath(s). If that (Marlene) is the kind of person that would "save" (note "quotations") the world, then the value of humankind *(NOT* Humanity) comes into question; one of the factors to what makes The Last of Us such a good story, as well as game.

as an adaptation, from naughty dog games into a web series it defines that TLOU is not just a game....

If they would have asked her and let Joel say goodbye it would have been a LOT different.

i wonder what would've happen if there was actually other immune people out there and Joel had to come out with the truth about what really happen at the hospital
