HELP WITH STUTTERING FOR KIDS AND ADULTS: At Home Speedy Speech Therapy Stuttering Exercises

Kelli Meyer, M.Ed. CCC-SLP Certified & Licensed Speech Language Pathologist
This video is to help reduce dysfluent speech patterns for children, teens and adults who stutter.
Types of stutters:
Block- hard time getting a word out
interjections - um, and
word repetition - repeating the same word over and over again
phrase repetitions - "and then, and then, and then we"
#1) reduce distractions - increase eye contact
#2) melodic intonation - use rhythmic speaking patterns
#3) easy onset - ease into words instead of creating a "hard start"
#4) understanding the difference between "smooth" and "bumpy" speech
*REGULAR SPEECH HAS MILD DYSFLUENCIES*
Remember, repetition is key!

I'm 35 now and have a successful career of which requires a lot of talking on the phone and in front of groups of people. There will always be people out there that will judge you because of the way you communicate, the older you get, the less you care about their opinions. My boy is 4.5 yrs old, he started stuttering 3 months ago after being normal. Our SLP rated his stuttering somewhere between mild and severe. The child being aware of his sudden change in speech (and sometimes nervous) She advised us with the smooth and bumpy technique of which I was hesitant to start with under the notion of not to bring the attention of the child to it. But given the age of the child (3.5+ yrs) and daddy being a stutterer himself, the risk factor was high to not out grow his stuttering and converts to persistent stutterer. Weighing the odds, I decided to start the Smooth-Bumpy, and to my surprise! The child started to improve immediately! It seemed like the child overcame his feeling of “guilt” being unable to talk normally and understood it’s ok to be bumpy! This relieved him a lot and from there he started controlling his speech and using the techniques mentioned in this video (rhythm, easy onset, easy word prolongation) in order to get the word smooth out his mouth, which then he gets praised by us. He’s doing great, he regained his normal pitch (after being lowering it intentionally to hide his stutter) as well as regained 75% of fluency. We are still working with him to achieve full recovery however, most important, we know we are on the right track! Remember, comment his bumpy speech but show it as info not as a blame or being something wrong, then ask the child to repeat his statement using the techniques, then once he says it smooth he gets a lot of praise. Parents praise is the therapy!

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I have found from my research, that stuttering is caused by a traumatic event, between the ages of 2-7. the cause is anything from a dog barking in a child's face, to a child seeing some one get shot! this is the spectrum that I have worked with. So when you put someone into hypnosis you go back to the first time they started to stutter. The subconious remembers everything. Then we do forgiveness and let the memory go from the body. Now when you understand how the mind and body work together, you can go back to the memory, and there is no more emotion attached,. that is when the stutter lets go. And becomes the cure. Good luck in the future. If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you for you time.

That rhythmic approach!!! I am a 28 year old woman and I discovered a few years back that I speak more fluently when there's music or a beat playing in the background. But when that music or beat is gone, I'm back to my struggle. I'm still trying to discover how to implement that rythmic approach even when there's no audible beat. I've always been in the choir and I know quite a few stutterers who sing perfectly. That's one mystery...

My 4 year old is starting to stutter so I came onto KZread and watched this video and another. Would you agree to these tips that were presented in another video? #1: parent should talk slowly and with pauses in between, and ask fewer questions. Don’t provoke responses from child, allow them to say whatever they want, when they want. #2: physical closeness. One on one time. At LEAST 10 minutes a day. #3: unlimited patience, don’t hurry or rush child to speak. Even in a hectic situation stop and listen. Make this be more important than what it is your rushing to, or try to give them a 5 minute warning of transition. #4: read books slowly #5: turn taking. make sure you are having everyone in house take turns with talking and other things they are doing. Example: pass the candle stick and when you have it it’s your turn to talk and no one can interrupt until that person is done talking. Anyways, if you wouldn’t mind letting me know if you recommend these tips on top of what you mentioned in your video. Also is there hope that thIs is something he can master and overcome? thank you for your time and I appreciate your videos!!

Hey there! Thank you for the comment, just as a heads up, most children will go through a stuttering phase between age 4 and five as language continues to develop at a rapid rate so that’s actually totally normal! I would say I agree with almost all of these except for reading books slowly, I haven’t heard of that one before - instead I would recommend reading sing songy / rhythmic books or books that rhyme. Giving iContact can also help for example when my daughter was four and going through a stuttering stage I turned my car rearview mirror to face her when she was talking and tried to give a little more attention to help with dysfluencies in the car which was the main trigger - Maybe too many distractions / too much background noise, etc It’s hard to say without seeing the child and hearing about when it’s happening but I think that those are all good ideas to start with for the most part but again it is typical for a child to go through a stuttering phase around age 4

I’m using this for myself 😩 I’ve stuttered since I was little. But now as an adult it’s even worse. To the point where I can’t even say my own name. Like… really ? My own name. I’m so embarrassed. The looks I get when someone asks me my name and I’m struggling to say a simple word is super embarrassing to me. Also, it’s difficult for me to even order food. Sometimes I don’t get what I want because as soon as I’m about to order, I feel a huge block coming through. So I just say whatever I’m able to say even if that’s not what I want. Anyways, I hope this helps!

Your channel has been fab to find... my 10yr old son has a stutter (repeating words or phrases as a place holder while he tries to find the next word) but he swings between the stutter and at other times slurring his words together so much that even I find it hard to make them out. Should I approach both these problems with the same tips you have here? As in rhythmic and clear? If he has himself caught in a loop and I am genuinely struggling to understand him, what is a good way to help him stop and start again without him feeling interrupted/dismissed? Thanks so much ☺️

  • @TheSpeechScoop

    @TheSpeechScoop

    2 жыл бұрын

I would let him finish the loop / stutter, etc & then at the end say something along the lines of “so I think you’re saying x, y, z is that right?” & if he says yes, most times children will repeat what you said back so that’s a great way to have a trial without it seeming structured! If he says “no” tell him “let’s think of the most important things in this story & say those words” (dog, lost, neighbor, found) oh! Our neighbors dog was lost and I found him!

STEVEN97 that is something that I’ve experienced a pattern with in working with fluency disorders as well. My best advice is to practice using a visual (for example if your name is Jarrod- put post its on the mirror that says “hi” “I’m” “Jar” and one next to it that says “od” (for each syllable) and touch each while saying “jarod” using a melodic tone. Then practice saying it while looking in the mirror. Sometimes, also, when you are introducing yourself to people, for some reason, we always focus on what WE are going to say, vs what the other person is going to say, and when we focus on what we’re going to say (which makes no sense bc we all know our name but think about it In that moment anyway) INSTEAD - FOCUS on really remembering THEIR name! This takes the pressure of you & your name & puts it on remembering THEIR name, which does not raise anxiety, as does when you focus on introducing yourself. It’s a simple change of mindset, but it’s helped several adults Who have asked me about it, and I do this myself as well & it’s somehow helped me be better at remembering names! Hope these help!

Thank you for this. My son age 4 has been stuttering and pronunciation challenges(he calls 'f' as 'p', consonants especially, etc ) for some months now. I think at the beginning of the year. I took him for therapy around February and we couldn't finish our session due to the pandemic. For some weeks now, I noticed he uses his hands to hit himself or raise his leg if standing or sitting when he wants to talk. How can I help him? I've been asking him to stop raising his hands and legs though. Thank you.

I’m 25. I noticed I developed a tiny stutter when I was about 15, but it wasn’t anything major. As time has gone on it has got progressively worse, to the point where I don’t necessarily stutter anymore, but I basically have one big speech block.I physically CANNOT get words out. Over the last 2 years, it has gotten soo bad that I have to write things down on my phone to communicate. Even when I do get words out I speak really fast and I get out of breath very easily. My chest is basically constantly tight, and in always feel breathless. Does anyone know what I am physically doing when I am speaking? And is there anything I can do to fix it?

im so sorry to hear that man, Id suggest make an appointment with a good therapist (preferably through text so you can easily explain everything). Im 20 and i stutter quite a bit, i dont have that speech block but i just stutter while saying some words. I was going to this therapy and it was working but bcs of some problems i had to quit. my suggestion would be to contact and make an appointment with a PROFESSIONAL therapist from a GOOD hospital bcs that gives you hope that he/she can make it go away. Trust me, thats important

Thank you for this video. My son just started stuttering during the pandemic, so therapy will have to wait. :( We did go through it with my now seven year old and she's about 90% fluent now. My question is that I was taught with my daughter to no bring attention to it, but if you model smooth and bumpy speech, isn't that creating an awareness that he may not have had? (He's four, pretty severe stutter all the sudden so perhaps he is aware.) Thankful for any input!

jellybeanbu hey there, I also went through this with my daughter when she was 4. Sometimes it truly is a phase and can be brought on or exacerbated by change (I.e. like a huge schedule change due to the pandemic, causing undiagnosed childhood anxiety) for a little on who is not diagnosed with a fluency disorder, that would also be my advice / approach, is to wait until schedules/routines normalize or return to normal, and not draw attention to it. Sometimes it truly is just a phase - my daughters lasted about 7-8 months. While not drawing attention to it, Try your best to make sure the environment is conducive to conversation when he is talking (I.e. TV/music off, no other noise going on to cause a distraction, have both your face and his face in full view, listening attentively & making eye contact) Lmk how it goes over the months! I think he may grow out of it! If not, I’ll be here to help!

@@TheSpeechScoop to my surprise, modeling smooth and bumpy speech and working with him just a few times made the sitter disappear. My daughter, it came and went at first, so I assumed it would request, but it hasn't all these months. He's a chatterbox that talks age appropriately and I'm so thankful. My daughter has graduated it off speech too, but she has a rather slow rate of speech, and will always just have her own unique pattern. Thank you for the help this video offered. I'm VERY grateful. ♥️ God bless.

Although it should not, Stuttering can definitely cause anxiety, embarrassment & discourage children from speaking when given the opportunity. I hope your little ones isnt feeling this way, if he is, make sure to provide some extra encouragement and reinforce his efforts & message whenever he speaks by making eye contact & producing his message back to him fluently to assure him that you heard & understood him! Hang in there!

Yes, lots of stuttering can be induced by triggers of anxiety, even when the child is unaware. Try to think of or notice things that might be stressing him/ out of routine/ different or changing for him! Also be sure to give full attention when he talks, not rush him or complete the sentences & maintain eye contact with patience if at all possible! :) let me know if you have any other questions!
