My child has started stuttering in the last 4 weeks and I so want to believe it's developmental but because I have stuttered my whole life, it's like my biggest fear for him is becoming a reality. For all the parents out there who may read my comment, there is massive truth in not making your kid feel self-conscious. For me, when my parents told me to slow and think about what I had to say, it did nothing but anger me and only made it worse. I stutter to this day. Your child knows what they want to say, believe me. There's a chance they've probably even ran it through their head 100 times before attempting to say it. Now, because my child is beginning to stutter, I try even more so to model so he doesn't think how I speak is the correct way. I only know from living my own experience but please do not put any pressure on your child.

@@Farisabrar12 model the speech you want for them. If your own rate of speech is naturally quick, slow it down. Give your child time to say what they want and don't make them feel rushed. Do not bring negative feelings around stuttering. Try singing with them. When you sing, you do not stutter. If they ask you a question and stutter, maybe repeat the phrase back to them in a slow and smooth speech as a clarification. Most of all, find a speech therapist as soon as you can to get a professional opinion and techniques. I've lived with a stutter my whole life. It can be managed, but you have the best chance of correcting it early on.

my daughter is 34 months and for almost a year now has been talking perfectly fine and until 3 days ago on the level of a 4-5 year old child. She's VERY advanced and now she's stuttering. In 2-3 days time it's gone from an occasional double "a a a" to now she'll repeat "I i i i i i i i i i i " like 10 times and finally give up. She's so frustrated and crying and just beyond herself. Normally calm and okay. Her pediatrician gave me the "it's normal" but I just don't understand how she can go from being so advanced so barely speaking a complete sentence and that's "normal and okay. Regressing the equivalent of 3 years seems pretty not okay to me.

@@faylinameir I have tried the method discussed in the video with my daughter. I stopped telling her to slow down because then she gets super embarrassed and doesn't want to talk at all. Also I have noticed when I speak, I tend to often stumble over my words and speak too fast. But when I pronounce my words almost comically slowly and stick to that speed, she reduces her stuttering. She really mimics me, so what if everyone in your family talked very very slowly to her but also among each other? And try to really be consistent with it.

Hi! Thank you for watching. I recommend you make an appointment with your pediatrician. If he thinks there are any red flag he will refer you to the neurologist. They are the specialists that will be able to assess if it’s autism or speech delay. Also, ask your pediatrician for a consultation with a speech and language pathologist. Hang in there I know it’s hard.... as long as you are being proactive you are on the right track! Keep me posted 😊 best of luck!

I am noticing the stuttering is on and off, not all day, and I am noticing the tension in the face and the eye blinking. This has been going on for about 2-3 weeks now and we are trying our best to be gentle with her so it doesn’t worsen but it feels like it is. Would you take her to a speech language pathologist at this point? Thanks!

@@artbarrera Arturo, I am also experiencing the same with my 2.5 year old son. after doing my own research I believe seeing a speech therapist is not yet recommended since my child has only been stuttering for less than a month (although he seems to be getting worse), I read taking them to therapy at such a young age where they are still acquiring language skills can actually interrupt the normal language development. I also read that at this age, we should wait until 6 months of stuttering to take them to therapy. It is highly likely the stuttering will go away on its own before the 6 months. I know... it seems like such a long time :( Good luck with your child.
