As a former Army MP & DACP I had the opportunity to work with a lot of MWD. Several of my old coworkers deployed with their K9 partners. One thing that is interesting is that sometimes the dogs stay and get sent to different handlers. Years later I heard the story of MWD Layka that lost a leg during a raid with the Rangers. I immediately remembered, wait, Layka was the name of SGT So-&-so’s dog… look at the pictures of that dog and I’m still pretty sure that she was originally an MP MWD before she went to the Rangers. I know that the Ranger handler had lost his original dog shortly before during a previous raid.

I traveled from base to base while in Afghanistan. One of the bases the army guys had just lost a dog on a mission. They treated the dog like any other soldier. The whole base came out to pay respects at the ceremony and there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. Seeing all the rough and tough men showing so much emotion was heartbreaking in itself. This brought TEARS to my eyes. Having a mini Australian Shepherd that I Love, going through advanced training with him now. My dog is my sole mate. He is always on alert Barking at anything he sense's a Danger. He will stand on my legs as I sit down with him on walks always on alert, head swivels, looking at everything in his surroundings. To lose him is heart breaking. The Training that special Forces do with these Dogs is amazing. That Dog is my HERO.

Very curious... we all know the lies that got us into the middle east, george bush lied about WMD's yet we're still there. All for $$$ and here you are defending it.... soldiers are brainless mutts just like the dogs doing as they're told with no questions asked about 'should we really be here doing this though' ... fkn pathetic. I put more value on the dogs lives because they don't know what they are doing, the soldiers know exactly what is going on and continue to create the very problem they are there fighting. Acting like WW2 heroes but they are the invading country this time.... so fkn sad.

I’ve heard many dogs save many lives. Again all my respect to the war fighters of the past, present, and those who will volunteer in the future. You along with a very few people like me is what makes this country the number one military in this sad broken world. So hu-rah, uh-rah, and the other rahs I left out. RESPECT from me, but also the enemy! Keep them guessing on how to prepare for us because in the end it won’t make any difference.

No way! The guy from 1:17 through 1:21 was a guy named Lauri Törni. He was a Finnish soldier that fought the Soviets in the Winter War. He later fought for the Nazis under the Waffen-SS. Then he eventually emigrated to the US where he joined the Special Forces under the name “Larry Thorne”. If I remember correctly he was a military advisor for MAC-V-SOG before he died in a helo crash in Vietnam. He’s the only known Waffen-SS soldier to be buried in Arlington.

For real? Gosh dam. That's a hell of a story and one bad azz war fighter's way of life. About 7 years ago a fugitive Nazi camp guard from wwii was rumored to be still living in the area. Nobody really believed it. But not only did he live in the same state, same city or the same neighborhood as I do. But this old Nazi lived out his quiet post war years right around the corner from my block in North East Philly. We cant always look at a man and know what hes been through, that's for sure.

Powerful stuff! Thx for sharing your story and Vinnie's story with us. I had an amazing Pitbull that saved my butt a couple times, her name was Nikka. She was the "Head of Security" on our farm here in Texas & there wasn't much that got past her ever-ready and hyper-vigilant presence. She was my "ride or die" partner, bravery is just 1 of her many amazing qualities; she even learned silent hand commands to give us an even greater advantage when moving on/ interdicting trespassers, ect. I was blessed to have her by my side for 15 years and I know the pain and heartache of losing a great teammate, regardless if they are four-legged and furry. As a part of our comprehensive Security plan Nikka was there for protection, to get In Harm's Way if necessary, but Lord help you if you harmed a hair on her head; it would be the last thing you did that I can promise. Long live the fur missiles! RIP Vinny. RIP Nikka. Gone but not forgotten.
