    I first heard the Hegel sound in the open reception area of a local audio shop here in Vancouver. No special room acoustics or treatments, nothing, just a normal room. The speakers used were the small Harbeths. I was stunned and I said to my friend, after we left the shop, "That was the best sound I have ever heard EVER" and I have owned a lot of audio equipment going all the way back to the late 60's. Although I am now a pensioner and new audio toys mean I must save, this H95 with the improved DAC, is a must to own. The reason I was hesitant on purchasing the previous H90 was simply the DAC. I knew that an external DAC would also have to be purchased and that meant another 700 USD. Oddly enough, I found a trustworthy analysis and review where the very DAC I was considering was compared to the DAC in this unit. The comparison was most favourable compared with the older DAC in the H90. So ... I must and will own a H95 because I know how fantastic the H90 sounded without the new up-grades. Thank-you Hegel ... I almost feel like I am taking candy from a baby because here in Canada there has been no price increase. Again, thank you and I wish you mountains of success.

    Hi dear Hegel Team, here's my feedback in a nutshell, for what it's worth: I love the H95! I was in the market for a modern, sleek amplifier for an average sized room (20-25 sqm) that allows me to stream music directly (no bluetooth, just Spotify or Tidal connect and Apple Airplay 2 just in case) to my speakers. Unfortunately, what broke the H95s neck for me was that it has to be connected via ethernet. You likely have your reasons, but from my point of view it a) defeats the purpose of modern listening to have this last wired connection and more importantly b) my router is not in the same room as my speakers, and I was not about to run a 20 meter ethernet cable through my small apartment. So I went for the Bluesound powernode instead. Perhaps this feedback is of value to you.

    Thank you very much for taking the time to write this when though you eventually chose the Bluesound. I do see your point og course. I myself currently use a so called powerline adaptor (20-30€) to avoid the long network cable. The reason we do not have WiFi is actually sound performance and stability.

    Hi, i was wondering if there's a way to set a different start up volume with the provided remote. I was able to do it with the newer, metal one before on a different h95 (had to return that one sadly), but now after buying a second one I can't find a way to get that starting volume any higher than 20 without having to adjust it every single time I turn on the amp. Would really appreciate any info on if it's possible to change it without trying to get my hands on the metal one. PS. Really enjoing the h95 otherwise, amazing sound combined with great design and a good set of features, keep up the good work guys! :)

    Another quick question regarding Airplay. I know for sure that in case of Chromecast (both external and built-in) the streaming always takes place on the receiver's side and sender is merely telling a remote URL a given track should be downloaded from. That being said, I wonder what is responsible for the actual streaming of data in case of Airplay protocol: is it a sender (iPhone, iPad) or receiver (TV or Hegel amplifier in this case)? I'm an Android user but having tried Airplay several times in the past (mainly from iOS Plex app) I've got an impression that playback stops once the sender side is switched off which makes me think that data is literally relayed through the air. Is there anything unique about Hegel integration of Airplay protocol that allows it to leverage Ethernet connection in order to stream music?

    Yes, that is correct. We do not want to have an antenna as it can introduce noise in the amp and reduce sound performance. LAN is also more stable for streaming. So you can use various adaptors. I personally use TP-Link powerline adaptors.

Do you mind to give a brief explanation the difference between H120 and H 190 beside the wattage, damping factor and price ? 2. H90 has been upgraded to H95. Will H190 be also upgraded soon since the launching year of H190 and H90 were the same? if yes, will it be in this 2021? Thank you so much. I appreciate your answers.

  • @HegelMusicSystem

    @HegelMusicSystem

    Hi Wylie. Thank you for writing to us. 1) First of all the things you mentioned. There are twice the number of output devices, there are double size power supplies. There are also component level improvements in the preamplifier that give the H190 a bit fuller and richer sound. But if you have small easy load loudspeakers the difference may not be enough for you. Myself I play it a lot with floor standing B&W and KEF speakers and then I find the difference quite significant. 2) There will definitively not be an H195 in 2021. That is certain. There actually are no specific plans for it at all, we had simply run out of full numbers after the H90. H100 had already been used, hence the H95.

    We really understand the frustration over the 24/95kHz limit. It was a well thought through decision though. We did find a very good receiver chip that performs really well and at a very low cost. The only limitation is that it doesn't like native 88.2 and it is capped at 96kHz maximum resolution. But with the money we saved we could drastically improve the over all sound performance of the DAC. So it has been considered back and forth A LOT internally. But whenever we measure and listen to it the way it is we are very confident that this was the best choice. Of course if you do have very much super high resolution material the decision might be different for you. But we think most people will mainly listen to 16/44.1 and just a little up to 24/96kHz or beyond.

    I recently bought one and have ran it in for 50+ hours and it sounds terrible. The bass is round, I'll defined and of the one note variety (And not deep) vocalists / central images sound distant and a good bit back behind the speakers and lacking in detail (Instruments and vocals have soft edges) Flattened dynamics and a sound that doesn't hold your attention or excite. This is waaay below my expectations of a Hegel amplifier and frankly, my Rega Brio packs in more fun, verve and excitement than the soft boring Hegel. My dealer says give it 300-400 hours and Hegel say 100 hours run in to sound their best. I don't believe it and think it's just to get your ears used to the sound. What say you as regards to run in as this amp is going to be handed back in return for an Exposure.

    @@HegelMusicSystem It's not the bass I'm worried about, it's the flatness of the sound with little or no dynamics. The singers, instuments etc all sound at the same level, bland and uninteresting is how I'd put it. I don't agree with your suggestion of putting them nearer the rear wall as they are at the makers recommended distance and they are rear ported and well known for their big bass output so I'm not going to encourage it to get boomy. Hand on heart some people see Hegel as the amplifiers in vogue with certain listeners but I find it no better than a Audiolab 6000A or a Naim Nait etc. I'm sorry to say I'm utterly dissapointed with it so will be returning it. Thanks for your replies anyway, they were what I expected.
