HEGEL H120 Review // Built to DRIVE!

Ғылым және технология

We are reviewing the HEGEL H120. I have always be impressed by this company and their innovation. In 20+ years in the industry when it comes to traditional class A/B designs not much has happend. I appreciate how Hegel over the years have conitinued to improve on their Patnent designs adding new "tech" to our industy.

    Hi Thank you very much for giving us comments, but I would like to ask that my current equipment is Audiolab 6000n, 6000a. Will there be a significant improvement if I switch to Hegel H120? Forgot my speakers are: Focal Aria 906, give me some advice. Currently my choices are H120, EVO150, NAD M10, NAD is a bit skeptical Class AB feels great to me, what do you think? Viewers from Taiwan will continue to support your videos.

  • @Hifyed

    Thank you! I’m familiar with audiolab and the hegel would different and would be slightly better in my opinion. I would really consider going up to the 190 or above. This way it’s more of an upwards move than sideways. We just did a video comparing the Cambridge 150, nad m10 and Naim. If you are like class ab I would stick with it, however, it does not hurt to give the evo150 and m10 a listen. I did not like class d myself but starting to like the newer Designs especially if you like very low distortion. Thanks for your support and viewers from Taiwan!

    With the USB being limited to 24 bit 96hz (on H95, H120 and H190) and other Inputs being bale to receive 24 bit 192 Hz: which input is the best to use when connecting to PC and other digital sources?

  • @Hifyed

    @Hifyed

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! In most cases, USB is the way to go. without getting to technical jitter etc. measures a lot better. Most 24-bit content is 96hz and it is hard to hear the difference between 192khz...This is however a good question to ask Hegel I have seen coax/optical perform just as well as USB. It always depends on how it is engineered.

    @@Hifyed thank you for answering! Will it have any impact on how the signal is received by the amp/DAC or how it's sent by the pc? At the moment I'm using USB with a jitterbug from AudioQuest and an old USB cable from Argon Audio, but the optical cable i used was a long bad generic cable so it's not s fair comparison. With the optical i could hair the interference and/or jittering

  • @Hifyed

    @Hifyed

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@heyqt7485 No problem! in most cases, you will hear a difference in the way it is sent by the pc. For example in your software if you are digital volume control, dithering on/off, etc. will have an impact on the sound...In most cases even if a better optical cable you will have increased jitter. In some cases, the jitter is more than 10x. I have however seen DAC measurements using digital inputs that measure very well. I don't have measurements on the Hegel so I can't if that's the case. Usually, in most cases, USB is the safer bet and seems that way with your listening tests.

    How would you compare it to the Peachtree Nova 150 to drive Dynaudio Evoke 20?

  • @Hifyed

    @Hifyed

    2 жыл бұрын

    Both are going to do well! It’s be awhile since I listened to the Nova 150, however, I remember it driving older emits and sounded really good. The one thing I can say for sure is the bass control and extension on the Hegel was impressive with the evokes. I don’t think the nova 150 would have that type of authority when driving the evokes.

    Good choice matching your kefs with Hegel! In terms of power and spl with your size room it won’t be that much difference between the two. The 120 however has a bigger power supply which any of the R seres models love. I would recommend the 120 if possible.

  • @Hifyed

    @Hifyed

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have not tried the new emits just the previous ones. Dyns do like current and power. I would say it would be a benefit, however, not enough that you would NOT still be happy with the h120 if you kept it. 😉 only make the change it you get a good trade in value or you can sell it with minimal loss.

    @@HifyedThe H120 drive's the speakers well but i keep hearing others say that Dynaudio like current/high power. What benefits would the extra power have over my H120? As the dynaudio's are 4 ohm speakers is there more chance of the H120 over heating when playing at louder volumes compared with a H190?

  • @Hifyed

    @Hifyed

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@hclandscapes it is true they love power! To let you know emits are still likes power but not compared to its holder siblings. You would have better dynamic contrast and control over the bass. If you are pushing your h120 to the limit over long periods of time it will overheat faster compared to the h190. The difference loudness wise is about 3db that you have extra to work with.

    This review really sounds forced, you didn't talk about its drawbacks (at this price range) it felt like a full-on advertising instead of actually reviewing this integrated amp! I can speak about it as I own one in combination with Harbeth M30.1. Drives them insanely good. Yes, bass is magnificent, but what Hegel lacks in its neutrality is depth in mid-bass/mid. It isn't as holographic as you say it is, because I can think of another brand and that would be Exposure. DAC is also inferior even though it comes from H190 in comparison to my Schiit Gungnir. Less separation, less transparency, and a bit "smaller" soundstage. Friendly advice, learn how to actually review devices and perhaps you'll get more views/subscribers, better reception overall.

    Yeah it’s full out advertising, paid by hegel 😂. We have nothing to gain from this review. Yes this may be one of the few reviews that we did that had no drawbacks. At the price, features etc. it does represent good value. I owned a 3010s and in fact I worked with one of engineers at exposure so I know it very well. I don’t think exposure is anymore holographic than hegel, but that is a matter opinion. For me at the same price if your looking for something more “holographic” you would have to go tube gear. Thank you for advice! In the KZread world statistically our view/subscribers is way above average for the amount of time/videos we have released. At the end of the day it does not matter. I have worked in the audio industry for 25 years in manufacturing, distribution and retail and made a very good career it. This KZread thing for me is just for fun and just doing it for the love of this industry 😉. Happy listening!
