Heddon Super Spook Jr Review And Tutorial

Ойын-сауық

Looking for a topwater lure that produces big fish?
Want to know how to “walk-the-dog” like a pro?
One of my favorite topwater lures to use inshore is the Heddon Super Spook Jr.
This "walk-the-dog" lure produces explosive topwater strikes that will excite any angler.
After using this lure for many years, I wanted to give you my honest review, including the pros and cons, for the Heddon Super Spook Jr.
See the full review by clicking here:

Heddon Super Spook Jr. Specs
Size: 3.5 inches
Weight: 1/2 oz
Standard Hooks: #4 saltwater treble hooks
These lures generally run about $7-10 depending on where you buy them from.
I do not like the treble hooks that come with the lure and usually, replace them with single inline hooks. This is something to keep in mind when buying this lure.
This is a great topwater lure that catches fish.
It has good action and is a solid choice for targeting redfish, snook, seatrout, bass, tarpon, and pretty much any other fish that feeds on baitfish at the surface.
While the lure is not perfect, it has proved to produce over the years so I highly recommend adding one of these to your tackle box if you do not yet have one.

Luke - I am a freshwater Bassin' guy but have come to admire your style and presentation of everything from your knot videos to testing all sorts of things from casting distances of various braid pound tests to revealing the not such great price justification for some leader materials vs. mainline breaking strengths. Thank you for all of that and see you and your brother have deservingly developed a growing resource and business! So I'm not the greatest baitcaster but in trying to acquire a few rods for "tip down" techniques like the spook, Jr., frogs, and the like, I have become frustrated in my analysis. I am quite short at 5'5" and with a skeeter boat that is quite low to the water I am finding that I need to use a 6'0 to maybe 6'3" rod length in order to fish "tip down" without slapping the water (& sometimes the boat) with the rod tip. Also, for some of these techniques I am feeling as if a Mod.-fast action would be preferable to fast action due to the issues surrounding treble hooks, increased casting distances, and increased landing percentage. Almost impossible to find that softer tip in rods that short? ANY IDEAS? My idea was to use 30# braid to a 15"-24" mono leader with the double uni knot you taught me and connect the spook, jr. with the non-slip loop knot you recently taught me.

Ugly Stik makes a 6ft rod with a soft tip. I have one it's my favorite rod but I don't like fishing top water with it because the stiffer zebco pops frogs and runs top water lures better. I think it's important to fool around with as many rods as you can so maybe you can find "the one". However I have found just having different rods for different stuff works for me.

I picked up a three pack of spook jr's on sale at DSG after seeing this video and caught a nice 15 inch largemouth bass on my second cast. It was literally my first real top water catch because I've never gotten any hits on a frog. I have since changed out the treble hooks to the inline single hooks which hopefully will make it walk the dog better while going through some grass because the one issue I have with them is that the second you get grass or some type of goop on the treble hooks, the spook will no longer walk the dog and just jerks straight forward when I try to twitch it, so I have to clean off the hooks everytime and try to avoid any areas of even sparse cover. Hopefully the single hooks will rectify that issue!

Another important aspect of this lure is setting the hook. I have noticed than I need to wait a second or two after the lure popped by a fish. This allows two things to occur: 1. it gives time for the fish to get the bait near its mouth and 2. if the the fish misses the bait, you can still continue to work it on the same cast.

This is the only top water plug I use. You can cast a country mile with it. The bone and red head I use mainly. Treble hooks all the way. Did not like inline single hooks on my top water plugs. None of my plugs. Use the hooks for live bait though. They are good hooks. VMC coastal black treble hooks I use. Thanks for video on the best top water plug out there. Heddon super spook jr and one knocker are the best. Try there one knocker Luke Simonds.

If your dog is going to be jumping out there while you have hooks in the water you need to either leash him while you fish or leave him at home. Most people who bring a dog with them have the dog trained to stay out of the way until the fish is unhooked. Hopefully 3 years later the dog no longer does that but still, do you really want to put your dog through the pain of being hooked and having a hook ripped out? Is not leashing them worth that to you?

To each their own. I put large treble hooks on my spook jr plugs. For redfish I use a constant fast twitch and I catch the hell out of the slot fish. Lastly, drum are SO easy to catch that it ain't rocket science. Put a spook jr in front of a hungry red and it will get blown up. If they aren't there, or aren't hungry, try another spot or day. People WAY over think redfishing.

Heddon Spooks are below average to me. They are hard to walk. They don't glide wide. It's more of a linear line. The sound emitted is garbage. I would never recommend this lure. If I go against someone who use this lure, chances are they will lose. I will be willing to bet a very hefty amount. As for singles, they are better at hooking, but they throw off the action when moving or pivoting. I'll stick to good trebles. Been waiting for a channel to let me express my opinion bc other channels think I am a hater.
