Lucky me I have a built in natural delay. Whenever I get a blow up I always have a second where I'm like "Did that actually work?" LOL I can't buy a bite with a walking bait but I can make them walk heck I can make em dance even.

@Flukemaster Wanted to come back and say I got to fish a tournament on a power plant lake in December. Caught 6 fish all on a walking bait, finished somewhere between 4-7th place out of 60 something people. I now have confidence in walking baits.

So timely… I was out a lot further north this weekend and saw a spook in my tackle box that my grandfather had. Tied it on and tried it for the first time but wasn’t sure I was doing it right 😆. Sounds like a different rod will help, but happy to hear I’m on the right track. Be well!

Gene, you are one of the only people to show how to walk properly. ive only seen one other person explain it right online and that was JT Kenney....and the drum thing was dead on. When teaching someone new to walk a bait, the most important aspect is when you twitch the rod or pop the rod, you dont stop the rod. You gotta twitch the rod and return the rod to the starting point. What you basically gotta do is throw the line back at the lure. so you move the rod like down,up down, up or back, forth back, forth. If you do not return the rod back every twitch, it will not walk. same with walking a frog or anything, but a spook is better to learn to walk.

I've also had success with it on a rainy day when fishing were exploding on the surface. Glad to hear your out there fishing if its been a bad year, in the last month and a half, my wifes Grandma passed, found out her mom had colon cancer (currently recovering from surgery) and last week found out my sisters having surgery to do a full test for Lymphoma only the good Lord and fishing have been my saving grace. Man, I’ve only had to resort to an open face a couple times fishing a walker, and it’s brutal. Just doesn’t pick up line at the right pace for me, and the reel's just not as comfortable as a bc that you can palm. Good on you for getting that to work. I will take a bc over it any day for this technique.

I also have a 6 1/2 ft medium fast action rod with a 6:3:1 reel with 15 lb flouro. Obviously the flouro isn’t the best choice but I may put some 12-15 pound mono on it if would work well with topwater baits like poppers and super spook jr.

well back in my 20`s in the 90`s i was fishing a pond with a spook but i was using spinning gear with the old spider wire fusion when it first came out or close to that. well i played around with it (trying to copy Bill Dance from t.v.) for a few minutes and actually got the darn thing to start walking. as soon as i did( doing pop, pop, pop, pause) as soon as i stopped the bait i saw a silver-ish shimmer come out of the plant growth at the bottom ( water was lightly stained but mostly clear). that thing shot up so fast and inhaled that bait so quick and i got so excited i set the hook and caught it. it was about 3lb 6oz i wanna say. anyways i have tried and tried to repeat that again . and i cant make it work no matter how hard i try. would you sir or anyone else have any tips or anything that may help me?. now days they don`t make spider wire fusion anymore and i would use 20 to 40 pound test in fusion back then. now i use ( kast king braid it works for me) and i use 20 to 40 pound test braid( but mostly 20 l.b.) with 14 to 17 mono (2 to 3 foot leader ) tied with a blood knot. also i have tried many times to use a bait casting reel and i just cant seem to get the hang of it. so i just stay with spinning, anyways love the videos keep them coming

Quick question Gene..I've been getting line twists on my next cast after walking the spook. Using a medium spinning rod and more of a side twitch due to being in a kayak also and not wanting to hit the water with rod tip. Is it because that I'm reeling in slack line? Do you think I should put a swivel with a leader? I'm at a loss on how to correct. I also use a loop knot and notice that you do not. I have 1 baitcasting rod but have 30lb braid. Will using that help reduce line twists due to the way its spooled? Sorry for the ramble and thanks in advance! Would be a miracle if I ever got to fish with you and pick your brain! Much appreciated from Lake Murray SC!

I throw a 3/4 oz heddon spook with a baitcaster. Curado spooled with 30lb braid but I always use 12lb mono leader. Not sure about line twist though....are you positive it's happening for you only when you throw the spook and not for any other lures?
