HEAVENLY MILK HELVA w/ Dates and Bananas 🍌🥛 Easy, Delicious Dessert Recipe! ☄️Vegan Version Too🍀

In Turkey we have so many different kinds of helvas such as from flour, tahini and irmik (semolina). As for this week we’ll be making Süt Helvası which is milk helva but with some magic Refika touch! The silky milk helva with a browned top and a delicious bottom with dates, bananas and walnuts will steal your heart!

Difficulty: Easy
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25 minutes
Service: 6-8 people
1,5 tablespoons butter (you can use coconut oil for the vegan version)
2 tablespoons flour
1L, milk (4 cups) (you can use almond or coconut milk for the vegan version)
2 tablespoons corn or wheat starch
200 g sugar
2,5 bananas, halved and diced
5 dates, small chunks
1 handful walnut, chopped
• Preheat your oven at 220C (430F) on the grill mode.
• Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the roux turns golden brown for about 4-5 minutes.
• Turn off the heat and add the milk and starch while the milk is still cold.
• Add the sugar and whisk well until there are no lumps.
• Turn on the heat and allow to simmer gently, stirring regularly, until the helva is smooth and thick.
• To bake it in the oven, use a baking dish (around 20x20 cm or 8x8 in) or any kind of tray that is ovenproof.
• Place the bananas, dates, and walnuts to the bottom of the dish and pour the helva on it. You can use ovenproof cups as well.
• Place the dish on the top shelf of the preheated oven and bake until the top turns brown. Be careful and watch the oven because it goes too fast from brown to burnt.
• Let it cool down to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight. Your silky and insanely delicious milk helva is ready to dig in.

that was supereasy and delicious! I baked it in small ramequins, wich made it look superfancy. But I liked it better the next day when it was cold. I think this is the perfect dessert to make for guests in advance!

This reminds me of a milk pudding that my Maltese grandmother used to make, flavoured with almonds and orange blossom water, so i will be making this version, i love dates.

I love the simplicity of this, I’m going to have to try it. There is a version of this here in the southern US. It’s called banana pudding and many make it into a pie. The only difference is the dates and caramelization. Well the South also smothers it in whipping cream. 🤔

I’ve just made it didn’t have any walnuts so added almonds instead. It’s in the fridge now can’t wait to try it. Next time I’m going to add nutmeg or cardamom to it 👌🏼😋

Awesome! I was under the impression that halva was a protein free sweet for the fasting season, but this is only the variations we are accustomed in Greece. In Turkey seems to have much more variations.

I just made this and it is amazing! One thing to note tho, using American tablespoon measurements will not work with this recipe. My Helva is still too gloopy even after adding more cornstarch :( And adding some cinnamon powder to the milk is a really nice combination with the banana, dates and walnuts!

Very nice. Reminds me of the "arrowroot" pudding my Dad used to make for me as a child if I'd been ill. Had the same almost indecent wobble as the milk helva. Thank you for the recipe, going to give it a try soon.

Wow, it's like my mom's homemade banana pudding recipe on steroids! We cook the pudding part on the stove, pour over sliced bananas and stuff vanilla wafers around it. Your method of adding dates and walnuts along with carmalizing the top looks so very yummy, and much healthier than the wafers. I'll have to try it! Thank you!
