Thank you so much for putting this online. I saw the episode last night, and this scene...is the funniest thing I've seen all year. I love it so much. Kevin's discomfort is so lovable, and the whispered "Dear God, please say it" was just priceless.

“My mom is from Michigan and my dad is from Michigan. And they met at the University of Michigan.” I knew she was born in the States but I totally thought she was ethnically Indian. The actress is half black so maybe her character is too? Haven’t seen the newest season yet.

I've had this conversation. They say, "Where are you from?" I say, "Minnesota." Then they say, "No, I mean, where are your parents?" I (used to) say, "Oh, they're in Minnesota now." I can string this along for quite a while.

I studied in Marburg, Germany. Students came from different corners in Germany and also abroad. The question "Where do you come from?" was quite normal. For me it always was a question showing interest in another person. I think it depends on situation, if this question is okay or not.

He’s already insulting her by being super random and asking “what you are” like it’s 1950s. I would just say “hey, I thought your family is Indian or middle eastern, so I have this form...” and then see if she disproves or not. I mean Heather looks ambiguously brown.

Because he is her boss and asking an employee their ethnic background in California makes you open to a lawsuit. Asking a friend is one thing, so long as you respect the fact that they might not be interested in discussing it. But, from a legal perspective and as ane employer, the rules are very different..... especially if there isn't a legitimate reason to ask. There are laws against it in interviews and on forms which may apply to this situation. And he literally didn't need to know that information to tell her about the program. He could have just said "hey, corporate is offering free management training to diverse employees. I don't know if you would be interested or if you would qualify, but if you wanted to apply I would support you. You show real promise as an employee and I think this could really boost your career in the future. Here is where you can find the information. Anyways, if you want to talk more about it, drop into my office anytime.". Also, this conversation should not be happening in front of customers like this. That's just unprofessional. His heart is in the right place and I truly believe he is a good guy. But neither the way he handles this, not your suggestion are smart ways to approach this.

I’m not sure this helps, to be honest. It’s easy to ask about a persons Background without being aweful. You yanks get so defensive and angry. We aussies aren’t like that. We say, gidday. Owyagoin mate. Your colour only matters if you want it to.

Nah, Australians are pretty racist too. If we weren’t racist, Pauline “Asian Invasian” Hanson would never have gotten into government, John Howard would never have convinced anyone that asylum seekers were throwing babies overboard, cops would have been convicted for Aboriginal deaths in custody instead of getting away with it every time. Kids in my school wouldn’t have known so many racist rhymes about Chinese and Japanese people. A former coworker of mine wouldn’t have imposed a limit on the number of Aboriginal boys allowed in the shop at once. I would never have seen a white stage actor in blackface. It wouldn’t have taken us this long to apologise to the stolen generations. None of my friends who are people of colour would have experienced racism directly, you’d never hear anyone snarl “speak English” to someone speaking a foreign language, as though English is the first language that’s ever been spoken here. Things are hopefully, slowly improving but white Australian culture is definitely still racist, and I don’t think it helps to try and fool ourselves that it’s not. Also, the colour of your skin, or more specifically, your ethnic background, /does/ matter. Of course it does! Not because it makes you more or less worthy as a person but because if someone’s ethnicity is Fijian or Vietnamese or Mexican or Pakistani, that doesn’t totally define them but it is part of them, their cultural heritage and ongoing connection to that culture is no less important or interesting than their connection to western culture.
