I am trying to freeze protect a stainless steel tank that is 15 feet diameter and 15 feet tall. the tank isn't easily insulated and i have a constant 1 mph air movement. I need to maintain a temp 5 degrees above freezing and my ambient should never reach colder than 0 f.

hello I'm trying to figure out more information about this... Im trying to install a constant wattage heat cable to the bottom of my dog cage to help with taking care of puppies. I'm a little lost and confused.

My heat cable is metal braded on the outside with no rubberized cover that I can see.If that outside braid gets nicked by a razor knife can it short out?

On a Three wire heating cable (50m say) can the length be shortened say by a meter or so and the finished end in shrink wrap be cut off and renewed on the shorter cable by joining the L and neutral pair together before re shrink wrapping?

Which is better

Can heating cable be submerged in a bucket of water I wish to prevent from freezing? I'm assuming not so I will wrap it around the bucket.

Hi Skystrider - You are correct, heating cable is designed to wrap around a pipe or vessel to keep the media inside from freezing. If you want to put a heater in the water to keep it from freezing, what you'll need is an immersion heater. @@DwyerOmega Do you think a 40 gallon water barrel wrapped with merely 6' of heat cable, plus insulation around the whole thing, and indoors (but building not continually heated) could keep the barrel from freezing more than just a thin layer of ice on top (lid will be insulated too but I do need to get through -30c winter). I'm guessing it won't work if inside it gets to -30c but down to -10c maybe? When colder I'll run a space heater in the room to keep that room warmer too. I realize you can't give an accurate answer but hoping you'll either think I'm crazy wrong or think I'm on the right track. I will visit every week or two to see status of barrel. Don't worry, the insulation touching the heat cable will be R14 Rockwool which can handle high temps. The rest of the insulation will be a big makeshift but hopefully have an overall ~R10.

@@TheSkystrider I'm a licensed Plumber and have installed a lot of these easy heat self regulating cable's under home's on pipes and meter's . I've seen cables installed on pipes and meter with NO INSULATION , under home's , from my experience the insulation for the most part conserves energy and pipe won't freeze , that's under a mobile home with skirting on it. I've seen couple ft. of cable just thrown in with the meter not taped just thrown in and then wrapped with a insulated blanket , something like you wrap a water heater with no problem . I can't say yay or nay if 6 ft is enough , but wrap the barrel with 6-8 inch spread and insulate good , no hole's for the heat to escape will be the trick for it to work , it will hold the heat and good chance you would be fine with a heat cable alone , ,keep the barrel on piece of wood , anything to keep off cold floor and cover/insulate top ,hope this info will help

@@dannystiasny2672 super helpful thanks! I have it on 1/2" R3 rigid foam. Will try to prevent a gap for heat to escape. I think you are right that it will work.

Can you use a heat cable on a RV water hose ??

Hello Texas! To answer your question, if the RV water supply is metal pipe, then Yes you can use heat cable, if it's a rubber or plastic hose then the answer is no.

If you wrap heat tape from source to let's say 3 feet beyond.... how many feet beyond 3' would not freeze? Let's say temp drops to about 20⁰F.
