it is not the same thing when it’s a group who needs representation and whenever we get it, it’s always a straight actor getting to portray our culture and our struggles, i love kit connor and i don’t want to know his sexuality personally, he can label himself or not if he wants. I think the issue is that people forgot that the problem is representation and opportunities for queer actors and not their sexualities particularly.

In some ways I feel like straight people playing gay characters is a little like white people playing or voicing black characters, to a lesser severity. In some ways it can feel like mockery or seems ingenuine. In my opinion lgbt characters should generally be played by lgbt actors, especially when it’s one of the main characters, though, I don’t think it’s any of our business to poke or prod at an actor about their sexuality.

I agree ones sexual orientation is just so personal, but that said you can’t blame others curiosity’s as even though we know it’s invasive it’s always nice to know whether our favorite characters are played by those who experienced it or those who just read it. Regardless he is a great actor and did a great job playing as Nick, so ultimately I don’t care.

I mean the fans did similar with the author Alice Oseman where they called the author out for being straight and solely writing queer books thus using the community for money. Alice then I believe had to come out as Ace/Aro-Ace (not 100% anymore) so that people would shut up. Straight people never need to sweat it because people just assume they are straight so they don't get it when queer peeps want to see open 'out' representation in media and popular culture. Anyone outside of the cis/het majority has to struggle with not only discovering their identity but also whether to come out or remain closeted. I don't personally feel the need to badger an actor about whether he's straight or queer, but I don't blame people for being curious about someone they may want to identify with, look up to as a model for an under-represented community, or just feel 'seen'. I feel like his non-answer is going to continue to spark interest because typically that means he's either a straight ally who honestly would do better to just say he's straight and clear up any rumours or confusion, or is queer but isn't ready to say it yet, which is TOTALLY FINE. Kit, do you, boo.

I feel if an actor/singer is 100% straight, not attracted to the same sec at all and still believes in no label, that’s very problematic because queer people don’t have those privileges that straight people do. I’m bisexual male myself who is still in the closet. If I ever come out I would loose my family members and some of my friends. I don’t think straight people need to worry about that. Firstly race is an obvious thing and people who are of a certain race mostly cant hide it and then there is a grey area where depending where you come from and how you understand race you have people with passing privileges who dont obviously look like any specific race e.g Zendaya . Then you have to think about the fact that acting by its very definition is a profession based on passing as something you are not , the ability to lose yourself in a character . Its impossible to lose yourself in a character through black face , the make up and mechanics required to " pretend " would take away from that and the very act of putting on the make up etc reduces a person' s physical attributes to a costume .Whereas acting like in this case as a bisexual person isnt the same thing

majority of my friends are a part of the lgbtq+ and are constantly being harassed by other students and even teachers with things like not calling them by their chosen pronouns or just saying you like girls because you are a boy or you're a girl so she likes boys and this can course different types of emotions and sometimes can lead to depression. this is where people get really confused some celebrities decide to share this information, however, there will be lots of people who decide to keep info such as who they are dating, if they are dating, what their sexuality is, etc. well when you think about it I don't blame kit Connor for not wanting to share this info as he is a young actor who is still in school meaning even tho he said he is strong in what gender/s he like that could change as he is still young. and one thing is that being gay or lesbian or bi isn't really a choice at the end of the day. this is because it's a feeling you get. this feeling is displayed in the show Heartstopper itself. when nick thinks he like girls but he starts having feelings for Charlie and he cannot help it, in fact, lots of people don't want to be lgbtq+ or that may have been how they found out they were a part of lbgtq+. now back on topic, I know the feeling kit Connor is going through yes mine does not involve near many people but I know the feeling as I do lots of school talks to other schools important conventions and other big events and lots of people just think well he is gay because he talks about human rights and BLM and the importance of lbgtq+ and BLM and human rights. every time I do a talk about lgbtq+ I get asked the same thing as kit Connor and it drives me crazy. and in fact, I am 14 and going through this and like to keep my life private and when u think kit Connor is only 4 years older and has only just become a young adult and 4 years isn't a big difference. and this pressure can lead to all sorts of outcomes and life is too short to worry about what people think and we knowing first-hand people just think well than don't read the comments ect well I have 2 things to say to that. 1st of all sometimes it's a verbal statement. 2nd it's not as easy as you think it is. you see our minds always take the negative before the positive and it can take lots of practice to do otherwise with stress on top of that and it being repetitive it gets harder to take the positive side of things. and lots of people that are young uncomfortable and disturbing. on top of all of this, some people have just started doing acting singing ect and some people that had anxiety may not and are still overcoming it. and you can put someone through hell and back with these little comments. these comments can affect people's mental health so please be careful of what you say

Kit is his own person and people need to respect that. He's literally 18. Let's just respect that he is one hell of an actor and his role in heartstopper showed that. Bisexual, Pansexual, Gay, Straight, it doesn't matter as long as he feels comfortable with his own sexuality, that's what matters. This is why people stay in the closet for such a long time too. That was literally part of the message in Heartstopper. So doing that now to the actor is just kinda.... ehhh. And it really doesn´t matter. They are actors. And if sexuality is such a big deal for some, we know about a lot of the cast that they are part of the LGBTQ, so that should be "good enough". If Kit decides to share that information some day, cool. If not, fine too. I just hope he is happy.

If so, fine. But there are many Lgbtqia+ actors who never get this opportunity. Either way, Kit is a lovely actor and seems like a great person.

Hmmm I've a different take on this one. Yeah, there are loads of LGBTQIA+ actors who never get *any* opportunity at all. But we shouldn't remind ourselves that these actors exist only when queer roles pop up, because queer actors *can* play non-queer roles too! I guess in a sense queer people presumably have lived experience that helps them better and faithfully portray queer lives. But isn't also the acting *the* art of living another life??? IDK, whenever people suggest actors of group X are better suited to portrary characters of group X, I feel like they're 1) downplaying the skills of these actors, as if they're only suited for X-roles and 2) forgetting what acting is.

I agree that one does not need to have lived a role in order to portray that character. Kit was fantastic in the role.

Given the horrid portrayals of gay relationships in other popular movies, it is refreshing to see this series. Kit and Joe do an amazing job of conveying the emotional connection between the two characters and if Kit is straight, it is a testament to his acting ability. The reason why heartstopper is one of my favourite shows, is that it not only includes great LGBTQIA+ representation, but also shows some of the realistic elements of being gay. Lots of people don’t realise how scary coming out can really be, and it’s not as simple as it may look. There are many incidences where you can loose friendships, communication with family and so much more. Having the bullies, kinda demonstrates the realistic community in which most people are surrounded by. Not everyone will accept you for who you are and that can affect you heavily. Being a queer teen myself, as well as most of the heartstopper cast, makes me connect my experiences and allows teenage audiences to relate to them. I think it was really annoying when friends and classmates were discussing Kit Connors role in the series and we’re assuming his sexuality. Most people assumed he was gay because he played a gay character, although that is common, like in joe locke’s case, however doesn’t mean it is the same for him. Kit connors sexuality is his to chose and random people on the internet will not being making his decision.

A young person especially may still be figuring this all out. Nevertheless, LGBTQ representation is still extremely important, so if you are a person in the public eye I feel like you can accomplish a lot of good by acknowledging your LGBTQ identity and increasing visibility and awareness. The world needs to see brilliant, beautiful, accomplished, intelligent, kind, passionate and positive LGBTQ people. I hope anyone who is LGBTQ feels comfortable enough one day to share their authentic selves with the world and know they will be loved for being who they are.
