In the 80's, people really went for it on every level. Clothes, hair, sound, colors, bigger, better, faster, more! I was only a kid but it seemed like everything had a cartoonish, over the top, childlike energy. Like the whole decade was a sunny Saturday morning in spring, tearing around the neighborhood on your bike without a care in the world. That's the 80's to me.

This was an interesting conversation. The guy explained the transition from 70s rock to 80s pop very well. The eeriness, dreaminess and all the layers of the synths and the switching between delicate singing and a rock voice makes this fantastic song. Gary Wrright has a song called Dreamweaver from the mid 70s. Same feeling but different.

One of the few Heart songs with Nancy singing lead. Ann has a more powerful voice while Nancy has a bit of grit in hers. Both are great and they each just released new solo singles.

I know what you mean about the huge style change between the decades. Being born in '74 and mostly growing up in the 80s (6 to 16 - so my school years pretty much), I can honestly say that incredibly as it may sound today, in the 80s most young people seemed to despise the 70s where I was (UK) - it took us till the 90s before we started to appreciate once again how great the 70s were, in my experience. It's like we wanted to put as much distance as possible between the decades. They were both hugely creative decades in their own way, and perhaps people thought we could keep improving indefinitely. Whether or not the 80s actually was an improvement on the 70s either stylistically or creatively is highly debatable of course, but having lived through it that's how it seemed to me at that time, looking back. Would be interesting to hear whether others felt the same or differently at the time. It's all good! :D 70s fashion was considered the lowest of the low when I was a kid (you wouldn't be seen dead wearing flares or sporting sideburns if you were a man, for instance), yet in the 80s we were all about big permed/crimped hair, shoulder-pads, sweatbands, sports socks, ski jackets, training shoes/sneakers and luminous electric bright pastel colours (which in hindsight seems far worse, haha!). It saddens me when some Heart fans (and the band itself) disses their 80s output. It's a spit in the face to those of us who fell in love with the band at that time, and it's always seemed a bit haughty and condescending to me. Yes, it was more mainstream but I totally agree with you - if it's done well, it's not necessarily a bad thing. And Heart did it well :)

This song is special because it features Nancy on lead vocals. A very rare occasion. Nancy takes center stage while Ann stands back and accompanies her. It’s not the best song to use to gain perspective of your expectations of the vocals. Two reasons, Nancy is not a professional lead singer. Ann is the lead singer and has set the standard for Heart and what people expect from the band. That said, I love Nancy’s vocals on this track and I am proud, as should she be, of her work on this song.

"1976...and now we're jumping 10 years ahead..." I disagree somewhat about the "poppier sound," but only because this is a "chicken or the egg" conundrum. I maintain that what came first was the most important innovation of the time: the advent of MTV. "Some bands were able to adapt..." which in this era meant "they were camera ready and their studio would spring the budget for a good video with a good director." Michael Jackson's multi-million dollar video directed by John Landis for "Thriller" is everything you need to know. You mention ZZ Top, which is another great example. Their songs were the usual ZZ Top fare, but those 1980s videos were iconic. Heart, I daresay, were pretty much forgotten until they started making videos for MTV. Note for the young-'uns: back then MTV was much more like radio. One hit song after the other. MTV doesn't really play videos any more. Oh, and also the band that used to be known as Jefferson Airplane. Fairly good 1980s videos, AWFUL songs compared to their best 1960s material.

When the 80s music started coming out it seemed like a tidal wave of great sounds after the hit and miss 70s. MTV came on with their first video "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles, and after that it was hard to keep up with all of the great stuff we heard on the radio and watched the videos of. Since he likes the synthesizer music, he would love Alphaville singing "Forever Young" and since she likes straight rock, she would probably like "Eighteen and life to go" by Skid Row.
