    Heyy Jayy....oh you made me laugh. Most reactors that I have watched react to this song have always thought that the members of Wild Cherry were black. They react to the beginning of the song like you did but I've never heard any of them say that they thought that the lead singer was a female. Oh gosh, you're so cute.     The 70s were a fantastic time to grow up - we had all the best music from the 60s, 70s (& 80s teen years). We were allowed to be kids who played hard and who sang and danced to all different genres of music!

    Yep - I grew up right across the river in Weirton. Dad was from Steubenville. Wild Cherry, pre Funky Music, was at clubs up and down the Ohio river at the time.

    This was the jam back in the day when it first came out and all of the dance floors were filled with people from all races, colors, nationalities & ethnicities!!! As a matter of fact whenever it is played today people still get up and jam to this track!!! Thanks Jayy!!! 🙂

    Without seeing, some have mistaken this to James Brown. This is a true live performance film but overdubbed with studio version. Hot Chocolate is another band you should do a reaction to. :)

    The story behind this song is amusing. As others have said, this band is from Stubenville, Ohio. They were playing a show in (I believe) Cleveland, and they were a rock and roll band. The funky disco sound was the latest thing, and the crowd wasn't loving their straight-ahead rock sound. A guy in the crowd (a person of color) shouted to the band to "Play that funky music, white boy" and a legendary song idea was born. If you listen closely to the lyrics of this song, the story is in there.

    Read that the singer said this song is based on an actual interaction with a female concert goer, when they played rock, she yelled out “play some funky music whiteboy” …he went home and wrote this song funky…

    It's OK, I have had trouble myself sometimes telling gender by voice. It has happened to me on the phone. They might say yes Ma'am, or ask my name and call me Ruth instead of Bruce. That's right. "They call me Bruce." (Movie 1982) And sometimes Ruth.

    This is good, but it's unfortunate that the clip doesn't show the black members of the band who made up the horn section. Visually, it would have been a great way to further emphasize the cultural and racial mosaic that existed back during that era. Many of us loved and played each others' music. Thanks, Jayy!
