She's a hell of a guitar player too. That solo at the end does not get enough props. She was an enormous talent. RIP

Being a former Belfast girl this song means a lot to me 1916 was the year of the Rebellion in Ireland, 1969 was when "The Troubles" as we call it really ramped up. My generation (same as Dolores) were all just tired of it, listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 and one of the lines is "how long? How long must we sing this song? Having lived through it, I'm still saddened by what I thought at the time was completely normal eg. Stopping to get searched every time you go into a store, it doesn't matter that you're an eight-year-old

Growing up in the US I remember as a kid hearing about the bombings & the IRA on the news here. Then I heard it was Protestants & Catholics fighting each other and my kid brain thought " Don't they believe in the same God & Religion"? They are like brothers fighting each other how is this happening? Why? I didn't understand it.

I was born in 72. Growing up, U2 was my favorite band, and Sunday, Bloody Sunday was one of the first songs I ever heard. I’ve heard Bono talk and preach in his songs about the Troubles many times, but your simple comment really hit me. Thank you for sharing. Peace be with you.

The song was written as a response to 2 boys (aged 3 & 12) who were killed in the IRA (Irish Republican Army) bombings in Warrington, England. If you'd like to learn more about the Irish Rebellion of 1916, I highly recommend the movies Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson & The Wind That Shakes the Barley starring Cillian Murphy.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is better when it comes to the history and giving a more well rounded view of the period, although they do play on the socialist angle too much given it's based on west Cork, a very rural area. Michael Collins is all over the shop with its history and is a bit over the top if I'm honest in portraying Collins as the one and only man to be able to push the movement forward.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll def check out The Wind That Shakes, Cillian Murphy is great in everything I’ve seen him in. Of course Liam is a great actor too so I’ll probably watch that one too. In America we didn’t learn about this, at least not where I’m from so I’ve read some and have a basic (very) understanding, but I want to learn what exactly has happened and why.

I live in northern Ireland lived through bombings from 7 years old ass windows blew on us as IRA had bomb in trainstation 80s throught to 1996 it was worse when my mum was young in 60s n 70s

You talked about Dolores's singing voice. It may well be attributed to her Gaelic roots. It's called 'keening'. It is a wailing sound that was used in Ireland long ago to 'wake' (mourn) the dead. The word comes from the Irish “caoineadh”, pronounced like “queena” and it means crying or a lament. ☘🇮🇪

Aside from the historical context, as a former soldier, all I ever heard was a song that spoke to what I now know as PTSD. For so many years I was never diagnosed or treated and the only place I found solace was a song like “Zombie” and/or similar songs.

I have ptsd from a different situation, but I could see how the lyrics could be put in the context where your mind goes through those traumatic war moments again and again and you think your living through it again. Hope you having some good days among your worst days..music is definitely a great healer..My own Dad has just passed 4 weeks ago and he no matter where he was listened to music of all types .....Even when he was dying and we were all there he still had music playing ..giving Alexa instructions on what to play next....yet to bring myself to listen to those ones, but I am the ones that have good times attached to them ...🤛

@@ko0974 sorry to hear about your dad. As for mine, he was one of those guys you may have heard about but never met. A myth. I spent time with him just listening and I would later learn that he felt that he had no one to turn to. I have felt the same so many times.

Since Dolores died, I can't listen to The Cranberries without tearing up. She's just a few years older than me, and I loved her so much, her sound, her voice, the lyrics of the group's songs, and the powerful music they produced. Such a tragic loss I still miss her.

Such a useless death. I have spent many nights in hotel rooms and they are the loneliest places in the world. The staff all nod and smile and you can become desperately depressed. The drinks pile up to escape the sadness and then what seems a good idea of having a bath and you're dead. That is the most tragic part of what happened to Dolores. If only someone was with her, if only someone realised, if only the staff checked on her. I am certain she never wanted this to happen. So tragic.

R.I.P Dolores listening to this gives me goose bumps she was a national treasure 🇮🇪 a flawed genius like them all I guess she's missed hope the other band members are doing OK 👍

Then when Brexit was going on; there were understandable fears that Brexit could bring about a revival of The Troubles. I listened to a song by American gospel singer Kelly Price called "Tired" following the news last year that a bus in Belfast, Northern Ireland had been hijacked and burned along with the subsequent violence that followed. This violence consisted of teenagers throwing bombs, bricks, stones and bottles at themselves and at police officers sent to stop the violence. The Catholic Unionist population of Northern Ireland was and no doubt still is tired of the violence by the Irish Republican Army, the police officers and the British Army; tired of being treated like scum by the politicians in Belfast and London, tired of the rigged court system siding with the Protestant Loyalists, etc.

Dolores said she wrote this song after the 1993 IRA bombings in Warrington Town in Cheshire, England. Some 56 people were injured in the blasts, as well as a boy 3, and a boy 12, who both died. The Cranberries were on tour in Liverpool at the time, some 30 km away. Immediately following the bombings there was a huge uprising of anger and revulsion both in England and Ireland. Dolores went on the say that she felt tremendous guilt.

I realise that in the US you're not very keen on, or good at, democracy, what with the attempt just 18 months ago to prevent, with violence, the legitimate and democratic transfer of power. Oh, and the small matter of the US being rated a 'Flawed Democracy' while the UK is a 'Full Democracy'. Given that the authorities' top 2 functions in a democracy are to protect our democracy and keep people physically safe, your anti-democratic views would come to the attention of our security services. Yesterday my mom who was born in Italy after WW2 remembered buildings that still hadn't been rebuilt. She said her Mom told her stories of walking over bodies and her saying " you do it because you have to, not because you want to." So they lyrics "It's not me, it's not my family" hits me in more ways than one. 1: I'm not doing the fighting nor do I want to. 2: I'm still alive and their not. 🥶

This song really hits me. I remember when I was visiting my home country on the last day I was about to leave the morning of to go back home to Canada I turned on the tv and this song was playing. I was sad to leave, the sky was grey and it was raining hard and little did I know it was the last time I would be ever seeing my grandfather and my aunt alive. Whenever I hear this song I never forget that moment.

"Linger", "Dreams", and "Ode To My Family " are musts when diving in to the Cranberries. I've always said Delores` voice reminded me of Enya, whose biggest song was "Orinoco Flow".

Since you’ve watched the music video, i highly suggest the live version. Zombie live in Paris 1999 is a must watch, for a live performance it has a crazy number of views, over 150 million. They’re just as good live as in studio. Dare i say even better live coz you get to feel the whole vibe of the band.

Me too. On both sides, I had family that fled & family that stayed. Those that stayed inevitably lost loved ones to The Troubles. The last time I was there was in 1999, and there was still tension in Northern Ireland that made some friends & family too paranoid to try to visit us in Dublin. Even today, that underlying tension is *still* festering.

As as Duran Duran diehard, I pay my ultimate tribute to the Cranberries, and Dolores for being a massive influence on my musical ride back in the 90s. They were really movers and shakers of the industry then.

This is the music of my time, the more you learn about the background of the song, the better the song becomes. I didn't know any Irish at the time, but many English soldiers who were in Northern Ireland themselves and/or had many friends who served there, some of whom died in the conflicts. EVERYONE loved that song back then. The Irish and the English.

Bad Wolves covered this song and Delores was supposed to be a feature on it but sadly she passed right before they were set to record. They weren't going to do it but they did and donated all the proceeds to her 3 children. I must admit it was fire and they did pay tribute to her in the video. I suggest you watch it

Oh the drumming is very underrated because of how part of it is offbeat to how a song like that would be drummed for sure.

i was stationed in nothern ireland during the troubles it was not a good time i am so glad there is some kind of peace now.

I heard this song and The Cranberries a million times growing up in the 90s and never knew what the song was about until I watched a reaction on it a few years ago. I wish I would have been more open minded when I was younger to explore different music and go see them live when I had the chance!

Ireland was under British rule and there have been many battles for Irish independence. Britain was fighting in the Great War, WW1. The Irish saw this as an opportunity to attack and during Easter week in 1916, there was a rising in Dublin. The rebels were defeated but it kick started Ireland on the road to independence. Independence was granted and Ireland became a free state in 1919. But at the loss of 6 of Ireland's 32 counties to the Crown. The new fight began in Northern Ireland which comprises of the 6 counties, between paramilitary groups, with the IRA (catholic) fighting for a united Ireland and loyalist (protestants) who wanted to remain under British rule. Many terrible terror attacks happened from both sides. The song Zombie is in response to the death of two children in an IRA bombing in the Cheshire town of Warrington in 1993. Thankfully The Troubles have calmed down a bit, but it still rears its ugly head from time to time.

The heart of the meaning of the song was,to me, directed to those who agree to fight in a war when the general purpose for it is either unclear to those who are fighting or supporting it being more influenced by what they were told they have to do in support of the war even though it is only in the best interest of those who sold the war to the public. The song writer is bringing the question to the minds of those that fight in and support the war “what’s in your head, zombie?” Seeing as how the social toll that war takes on society by killing of people in mass is still not enough to bring the question to the minds of those who continue to support war of “what am I really accomplishing here?”, in spite of seeing what carnage it creates even in their own lives. The writer also suggests that the “zombies” further justify the destruction by reasoning in their own minds that “it’s not my family”, not realizing that the mental impact hits them just as hard, since we are all part of the human family, the waves of destruction we participate in are also coming back to ripple into our own “family”. Interesting that the singer died so young expectedly too. I’m sure that is just a coincidence though, go back to sleep…….

I was about to suggest Dreams by The Cranberries but I see you’ve already listened to the song. It’s unfortunate that the band is a bit underrated with the way they sound Celtic, which I consider more timeless as well as beautiful.
