As an adult I met and married a man 6 yrs older than me. I quickly noticed that age, and experience difference. His friends were guys and their wives another 5 yrs older than him. So my friends and their new husband's bored him as too young and inexperienced. It was ok initially, but he really wanted a wife with years of housekeeping, and cooking experience. I worked fulltime, stabilized our finances, and learned how to cook, yes there were errors, he wasn't very patient.

He’ll be worse when she wants to go to college. She’s 17, she shouldn’t be thinking about babies.

I disagree. The sooner we teach girls about babies the better they can think through the hormones and emotions rather than succumbing to jealousy or the biological clock. Teach them the responsibilities, the lack of sleep, the pain, the sacrifice, the gross outs, the giving of your time and body to another BEFORE they start looking at boys and you'll see less teen pregnancies.

All I have to say is go back through your own family tree. Child marriages were common back in the 1970's going all the way back to biblical times. I guarantee someone in your family tree married a child bride. And without that marriage you would not be here today.

I was this girl back in 2005 at 17 years old. I spent almost 14 years of my life and my entire adult life with that man until about 4 years ago. He was controlling, manipulative, jealous, demeaning in order to get his way, etc. I’ve been on my own now for just over 4 years, I’m 36 years old now, and it’s hard for me to have a relationship with another man, bc I’ve become so selfish after spending so many years with a man whose wants and needs were always put over mine, I just want what I want at this time and do not have the ability to compromise. Even though I’m not with him anymore and have a happy stable life, that relationship still has effects me to this day. I wish o could tell this young lady on stage the big mistake she’s making.

all the other points aside (and there are DEFINITELY problems with this "relationship" and it's criminal in most civilized societies, as it should be)...shame on Dr. Phil for shaming the girl for taking the RESPONSIBLE step of getting on birth control. That's the ONE smart thing about what she's doing! The only thing that could make this tragic, criminal "relationship" even worse would be for a child to come out of it...she'll hopefully grow out of this nonsense and be able to go on with her life...with an unwanted pregnancy coming from this mistake--especially now that the US is a country (along with Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia) where girls are forced to give birth to unwanted pregnancies, even those from rapes--her life would be permanently ruined. Lock the dude up, tell the girl she's nuts...fine. But do NOT ridicule her for being responsible about birth control.

All I have to say is go back through your own family tree. Child marriages were common back in the 1970's less common in the 1980's but still went on, start with the 1980's go all the way back to biblical times. I guarantee someone in your family tree married a child bride. And without that marriage you would not be here today.

The best thing the mom can do is make sure she graduates HS and goes off the college. Once she at college and meets boys her age-he’ll be history.

She's going to find a boy her own age in college and then this guy will try to unalive her like his ex. That's if he doesn't knock her up before she even has the chance to go.

She is book smart but is very naive. I don't think she has had any experience with boys her age which is why this has been so easy for him. If she ever decides to do anything for herself besides focus on him that threatens his control over her, he will treat her the same way he treated his ex. She doesn't grasp that he is seperating her from her support systems like her friends and her mother. She thinks its love. She doesn't understand its abuse. I would be interested in the update of these 2 in 5 years. Its probably gonna take awhile for her to get out of this.

I started sneaking around and talking to my BIL’s cousin when I was just 16. When I was 17, he was 28, I had literally “fallen in love”, and told my parents. They objected but knew I was months away from 18 and they wouldn’t be able to stop me. My mind was made up. He was controlling and possessive the more serious things got, and I ultimately didn’t have any friends my age anymore. I moved into his house after graduating HS at 18. I ended up not going to college bc I knew he was concerned that I would meet someone better than him and didn’t want to deal with the drama of him constantly accusing me of cheating. When I was 20 we had an unplanned pregnancy, she is 15 years old now and is my one and only child bc I didn’t want to being another child into the world bc he was so selfish and I did almost everything for our daughter myself. After spending almost 14 years together when my daughter was 10 years old, I realized I couldn’t take it anymore. I’d lived under his thumb my entire adult life and didn’t have anything for myself, nor any support. And it took me that long to leave a man I need to say good for me b/c he did everything he could to make me believe I could not take care of, and provide for my daughter and myself on my own. At about 32 y/o I left that house that I helped pay for and make into a home for almost 14 years with nothing but my truck and our clothes. Stayed on my moms couch for about 5 months and finally by Gods grace a house that I could afford with a gf of mine who just separated with her husband, our daughters were best friends so we all moved into the house together, and slowly but surely and only by God’s grace after 4 years my daughter and I live in this house by ourselves now and have been for 3 years, and life is pretty good. But I allowed that man to rob most of my adult life and this young girl is about to do the same thing.

Just wait till she gets a little older and he shows less interest in her and more interested in other 17 year old girls. He's messing her up mentally.

I met my future husband on a blind date when I was a senior in HS (17 yr old). He was 26. We dated for 3 1/2 years then married. We were together for 50 years. He was and still is the love of my life though he died at age 76.
