Billy Squier didn't have a problem musically. He had a problem when his record company wanted a video for Rock Me Tonight, which is a great song. At the time in the 80s Michael Jackson was dominanting MTV. Billy's producers wanted him dance throughout the video. He was opposed to it completely, but they were paying for it, and it was what they wanted. They told him it was great. It wasn't.

You mention hip hop - Billy sued his record company over his royalty issues, won and as part of the settlement he got the rights to his master recordings back. When hip hop came along, so many artists sampled his songs he’s made millions in royalties from them.

Squire was really good at the time of 1980 1981 in the rock area. Music was changing, some of the groups from the 70's were not there and this gave us something different from the growing New Wave sound. Neither was bad just different. Also this was right before the commercialism of MTV that was just starting.

Billy or someone else in the Band may have added that Trumpet but usually it's the Record Producer that suggests embellishments like that. Sometimes a Studio Musician will say, "How about this?" and create some fire on the spot with random instrument. I don't hear no Trumpet myself, I'm thinking a Synth maybe? Not sure. Reinhold Mack produced this with Billy, he did this album right after Queen's - The Game. They recorded 'Don't Say No' at New York’s legendary Power Station studio. 'In The Dark' next please. Cheers.

Probably, my favorite Squier song but "She's a Runner," "The Stroke," Lonely is the Night," and "In the Dark" are strong runners up. For this song I hear a bit of Paul McCartney influence not in the vocals but the musical composition and arrangements, especially, the touch of brass in a section of this song and his little piano flourishes in "She's a Runner." Great reaction guys!

It just shows how the times has changed. If you were hard rock person, wearing pink, and rolling around on the ground. Then you were labeled as “ gay “ . Which didn’t go ( keep in mind the timeline). The early 80’s was a mixed up fusion of fashion. The song is actually one of my personal favorites. But in those times it was acceptable to get shunned just how you looked ( especially in the rock realm )

EXPOUND!!! Jeez, when I heard the guy who played Henry Ford the third say "Expand" in Ford vs Ferrari, I confirmed that wasn't the correct use of that term. Now this guy???

This whole album could have charted as singles. Billy's problem is the next album. He was basically blacklisted, if rumors can be trusted, after the video for Rock Me Tonite was released. I don't think the song was awful, but the video was cringy. He had other songs worth listening apart from the Don't Say No album. Check out Reach for the Sky and G.O.D. from Signs of Life.
