Thanks for your time Nick 🙏 Lot to learn about these new goggles. Excited to see what features they have coming 👀 That internal mic is good enough for some "note to self" moments.
thanks again for all the goggle discussion. i have a few flights on my hdzero goggles now and your tips were great!
Something to note for those looking for a compatible mic, the mic connector is TRRS - Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve. The little black plastic rings aren’t the things they’re talking about - the letters represent the shape of each conductive element in the connector. Most headphones use TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve), and things like head tracker/trainer cables typically use TS (Tip, Sleeve).

Good detailed information. Thank you, I failed to remember to put some text on screen during my memory failure.
I think the mic on this is perfect for regular fpv quad pilots that aren't doing reviews etc....the ability to have commentary on the flight recording without all the youtubers gear is a great upgrade! Perfect for just showing flights to friends and sharing the experience or tricks that you've been trying to pull off etc. Can't wait to pass vids back and forth with the buddies and finally be able to have audio with it!
@NickBurnsFPV

I can agree with that. I am probably being a bit fussy worrying about changing the flight audio as it could impact those watching judging noise from one quad to another. It will very much help me include flight audio in the case of a crash reel, so much easier to include than syncing two files or leaving the flight audio out.
I've been waiting to upgrade my analog goggles for a year or more now since walksnail, hdzero, and others were all working on new products. Looks like these might be for me! I absolutely love my whoops so goggles that will do analog, HD, and digital, plus all the other features like headtracking and hdmi-out etc would be perfect! I can finally upgrade to multiple vtx options and not be limited to analog quads! I'm excited about these and I'm really glad I waited for them to drop!!! Can't wait to get mine and also finally snag a 4 or 5 inch digital ripper! The hobby has finally busted wide open for me with these goggles! Thanks for the review, Nick!

@Nick Burns The only things I kind of dislike are the set back SMA connectors which are kind of hard to tighten down. The power switch gets covered up by my barrel plug when I have a battery in the goggle strap. Also the finish paint if you will call it looks real easy to get dirty or scratched. But other than that these are the greatest feeling goggles on my face and the optics and lens are amazing! Thanks Nick!

@@baggszilla yea, I noticed the switch difficulty as well. When the first pair of printed goggles were produced that was a complaint, unfortunately there was some limitation that made it difficult/impossible or even cost prohibitive to move. A right angle barrel connector helps loads. the xt30 to barrel adapter I bought has really made it easy to get to the switch.

@Nick Burns one more thing is the faceplate is really hard to snap in lol. I thought is was pre-installed out of the box so I installed my foam and my truerc patch antennas. Then I look and it's not fully snapped in. So I have to try and not push to much pressure on those antennas when snapping in my face plate.
Great write up. Can you expand on your experience flying analog with these vs the 04x with regard to tiny whoops with 4:3 cameras and the goggles FOV?

Awesome comprehensive review Nick - Awesome Goggles - a Paradigm Shift in FPV. I was going to "buy in" to DJI when I bought the Mavic Pro Platinum. But once I realised DJI had adopted the Apple business model I gave up on DJI. I tried SharkByte but the VRX failed: no preplacement available but I did get a refund. So big thumbs up to Mike at HobbyRC for that. I have bided my time and this week I finally secured a pair of the HDZero goggles in their amazing value Freestyle Bundle of Micro V2 Camera + 120mm MIPI cable + Freestyle VTX + Antenna + HDZero FPV Goggle. I already have the original SharkByte VTX and camera waiting in a 5" quad. And I will be adding another camera and VTX to the 3" AcroBrat quad that I am building. After that will be a Beta 85X HD (DJI) conversion to HDZero with their whoop board. I am well on my way to a phased conversation from analogue to digital FPV - HDZero being the ONLY system that facilitates that route. DJI's absurd business model has cost them in the permanently loss of a customer - and I am not the only pilot who thinks that way. So Nick, I keenly await your reviews of HDZero and compatible products. Sorry, I do not be watching anything with DJI in the title...
@NickBurnsFPV

I wish dji would open up to the fpv community and make a vrx, but I agree with you, they likely aren't or don't seem to be interested. They would rather have everyone spend more money to fly dji fpv.
Hi Nick and happy new year. So this was a really great review of the HD Zero goggles and related stuff i am really happy to hear that the quality of the optics is really good - I had heard that somewhere and this is a big deal, especially the fact that you mention that all you see when you put them on is a rectangular screen, edge to edge, and not much else - that is going to make the experience that much more immersive. Geez, I finally had enough money at the end of the year to buy a set of DJI Goggles V2 and I am super happy but I can't help but feel like I might have been better off going with HD Zero... well, at least it is hard to complain about the DII goggles, they are pretty good and of course the link is really really good, at least for me it should or will be really good. I am not that quick with my reaction times so I don't think I will ever need super low latency but perhaps I am wrong and latency is even more important for someone with slower reflexes... eh, all I can say is I am super happy and grateful that i finally have the DJI's after waiting about 2 years (money has been, um, tight...) but darn if the human in me doesn't keep saying "but I want that..." funny the way we are programmed right? Cheers.
@NickBurnsFPV
Жыл бұрын
The image quality that we get in the dji goggles is really really good no doubt. It would be so cool if dji made a vrx, but I don't suspect they want to save anyone in fpv any money. latency can be a bit of an argument starter. Most find a way to adapt or they natively adjust. I think its harder for me bouncing from system to system. I do feel more in control or "connected" when I am flying analog or hdzero, I suspect that feeling is the latency, but it could also be the weight as I am often flying something with smaller than 3inch props. I say if your happy with what you have we should enjoy it and not chase the upgrades....unless that keeps us happy :)

@@NickBurnsFPV Thanks for the reply. One of the things I was talking about is how funny human nature is - after waiting a couple years to get what is arguably one of the currently best FPV systems available that I would start to feel a bit of buyers remorse and to be jealous of the HD Zero stuff. In fairness to me I was strongly attracted to the HD Zero system and knew that the new goggles would be amazing but when DJI made the goggles only $429 well - they got me! Also - if you read this far I recently came across a charger that to me has to be one of the best values as well as one of the best capability and feature packed chargers out there and it would be awesome if you checked it out and did a review on it. They have 2 versions that I like - Both are B6 chargers, one is a Duo charger meaning it has 2 charging ports and the other is called the Nex and that one is super cool as due to the technology they used it is very small and powerful. They both have 1000ma balance current specs which means these will have pretty fast charge times. Anyway, I have nothing to do with anyone or anything I just really like these chargers and I think they could be great tools for FPV. I am designing a quad myself and it is fairly innovative but I am ways away from talking or showing anyone the design let alone proof of how it will perform but I think it will be cool as I can actually claim that there are zero quads that I have ever seen that would be like it. Cheers!

@@NickBurnsFPV Yes - exactly. The GaN tech is AWESOME - I have it in my Toolkit RC Benchtop power supply the thing is tiny yet 30v and 10A!. If I just did not get an ISDT K4 (nice charger, powerful is its defining feature!) I would be getting one of these. Perhaps I will get one for travel as it is really small yet notably powerful. I wish the GaN model came in a dual port config but I will take it as is. Also the Bluetooth conn. and software that goes with it is much better than what i got with my ISDT - it is actually quite disappointing as the K4 is arguably their top charger yet I think some of their lower spec chargers have better software... but hopefully they will catch up on this aspect of modern chargers. However that ISDT can charge 8 cells and do it with up to 600 watts PER CHANNEL! Yikes that is a lot of power. It can also be used as a power supply. So my charger can power my other chargers! So I just think this is one of the best chargers that I have come across (I am usually very obsessed when researching stuff so believe me when I say I came across just about every single brand and model of charger available and this one is a clear stand out.) and I wish I found it before I bought a different one. So I am being a bit of a whiner here, the K4 is a big deal in it's own right, I am just bummed as I thought the backend software was going to be much better than it is. Anyway as a mechanical engineer I am just the kind of person that is always looking at tech and I really appreciate innovation and value. Cheers!

HDZero goggles have been my best FPV purchase to date. They ACTUALLY lived up to the hype-train. I haven't missed my O3 system yet. The Nano 90 camera is sweet!
This platform is truly amazing. The perspective of no longer needing to rely on some really dodgy FW provided by the manufacturer and being "locked into it" is formidably. Of all the HD formats I would prefer HDZero since it is providing all the benefits of analogue without the annoying limitations of DJI video (I don't want to start a flame, just my impression). I have a Skyzone Sky04X and have suffered from a dodgy VRX and have changed it to TBS Fusion. The goggles are okay, but my impression has been affected by the very poor experience with the receivers. Love the video Nick! I was looking for a battery and even though the RadioMaster 6200 doesn't seem to be available anywhere... I found the older 5000mAh to be a steal at newbeedrone @ 15.99 each which I bought 2 packs. The difference seems to be a 30 minute difference. 5ah / (15w / 7.2) == 2.5 hours where 6.2ah is 3 hours. Bought 2 batteries for the cost of one. Excellent videos as always and thank you for sharing the battery you used as I was having a hard time find a good solution. I guess I could make a xt30 cable which would take 2 batteries in parallel for a total of 5 hours... but that is probably overkill....lol

Thanks for this very detailed and well made video. So, what is your preference now for whoops? Digital or analog? Love my HDZero Goggles. One complaint is the location of the power button. Too close to the barrel plug. Now regarding the Rapidfire needing to be on RF1 mode, in a more challenging environment, the video does roll. This is why RF mode 2 is preferred in other goggles like HDO2s but RF2 is pretty poor at the moment in the HDZ goggles. I then tested my RF back in my Fatshark HDO2s and the video does not roll. I actually get better penetration with my RF in my HDO2s. I know they are working on improving and I am in the Beta testing group so I know it it will get better. You will not regret buying theses.

I haven't use the orqa fpv one goggles much as the field of view is smaller than the previous version. The hdzero goggles appear larger. The original orqa goggles have a larger fov but the corners I can't see and the screens/panels aren't as good. It is likely the hdzero goggles will give us the ability to decrease the screen size one day. This comes in handy for those that can't see the corners of the hdzero goggle screens. Its not implemented or even beta yet. This was a feature orcq does have in the fpv pilot goggles but its only one size rather than the ability to select a granular size reduction. I have heard from one person they were not able to see the very edges of the corners in the hdzero goggles.
Hey Nick, a great review as always and a great set of goggles which I plan on ordering soon. Just a quick question regarding the RadioMaster battery you showed. Being a Lipo wouldn't there be a problem if that battery was left in a high state of charge, given we normally use storage charge for Lipo batteries?
@NickBurnsFPV
Жыл бұрын
For our goggles batteries the potential damage is minimal. And we either have another large battery to manage the voltage on or accept the minimal damage. in the studies I have seen if our lipos are left at full charge for about a month the capacity and performance can degrade by 2%. Google batteries really don't need to "perform" as their discharge rate is pretty slow vs the high discharge rate for our quad batteries.

Nick, how are these in terms of lens diameter? I have tried the DJI V2, Skyzone 04X and Walksnail Avatar goggles but my favorite by far is the DJI just because the lens size is so much larger I don't feel like I'm looking through key holes to see a screen on other side of a door. I have actually come to prefer the Skyzone over Avatars because Avatars lens is like 1.7mm smaller in diameter then the Skyzones. The screen also seems further away in the Avatars. If the DJI's would accept HDMI in I would sell everything else. Edit: went ahead and ordered via link. Hard to convey my perspective when size/fit is such a subjective thing and I don't see anyone else complaining about this subject unless the FOV is like 30-40.

they really did something right with it... the most amazing thing imho would be, if they would base future improved hdzero versions on the same goggle design.. so you could keep the goggles, optics, and just replace the pcb inside the goggles.. cause to be honest, it is a huge waste of resources to buy new goggles everytime a new digital system comes out... it is also expensive, I imagine that new pcb revisions could be sold for a decent price in the future. but idk if there is huge potential or not with this hd system... @@NickBurnsFPV I would like to hear what you personally think of Walksnail vs HdZero. I like both systems. I mostly fly micros, so hdzero is very high on my list. But then Walksnail came out with relatively light and small vtxs, which I thought was totally awesome. I like micros but I don't mind going up to 3.5 or even 4 inch props if I have to, in order to get a decent digital experience. For those of us who like micros and smaller quads, dji is mostly out of the question. So we are left to decide between hdzero and walksnail. Both systems are awesome imo and I would probably be happy with either. I already know the specs about both systems, so a video explaining each system is not what I would like to see from you, Nick. I would really appreciate a video of you explaining how you feel about each of those systems and how you feel about them, considering your style of flying and the kinds of quads that you like to fly. I'm interested in your take of these two systems. I already own analog goggles that I like (Fatshark Scout), so don't need my new digital goggles to be able to run analog as well. However I wanna know how you feel about the new analog deinterlacer on the hdzero goggles. Notice any improvements over the traditional deinterlacers? Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
This will be a long comment... hope you'll still read it. I really like the HD Zero system. I have the sharkbyte module from nearly the beginning. I really appreciate that it is still updated. The osd elements look exactly the same as in this review with the latest uodate. I do not know if it is new, but recently I discovered that there is a LED option in the camera setup. It makes flying indoors with lights on (normal case for me) a lot nicer! It reduces the halo effect of if not fully eleminating it (I only have LEDs in my house). For the goggles I still have one point never mentioned that is keeping me away from getting them. I am a 4:3 flyer but the goggles have 16:9 screens. In many reviews 4:3 is used. In this review it is easy to realize, that the osd elemets are even outside the camera picture. Doesn't the screen appear to be "small" in 4:3? It is true that I have sometimes issues to see the corners in my SKY04X! But I could use the mode with a small picture... what I do not do as I prefer the bigger screen with maybe cut corners to the small picture. The same is valid for 16:9. In 16:9 I see clear all coners in the SKY04X, but the height is too low in my opinion. Could you compare the SKY04X picture with the HDZero goggle both showing 16:9 and 4:3? In 4:3 the SKY04X in small and normal size mode? Does the 4:3 picture seem to be smaller to you than in the SKY04X? Sorry fot the long comment... Happy HD flying!!!
@NickBurnsFPV

The HDZero screens are larger than the 04x, with that even at 4:3 it appears larger than the 04x screens. There is also a coming feature to reduce the screen size, either as a preference or for full visual. The OSD elements can only be outside of the camera view in the case of using the hdzero video transmission system. I also expect to see the ability to move the hdzero osd elements around on screen as well. Its a very flexible system with performance being the focus of the developers. In my 3 weeks with the goggles I have seen more than 5 firmware updates and a 6th I didn't apply before the review. I hope that helps some. Please let me know if there are additional items

I appriciate your answer but imho it is actually not representing the specs. The FOV for both goggles are given with 46°. I far as I know this is for both the max. horizontal FOV. With the given display ratios and with the Skyzone cutting top and bottom for 16:9 while HDZero is cutting the sides for 4:3 this results into the following FOVs Goggle ratio FOV horizontal vertical resolution Skyzone 4:3 46° 35.3° 1280x960 HDZero 4:3 35.3° 26.9° 1440x1080 Skyzone 16:9 46° 26.9° 1280x720 HDZero 16:9 46° 26.9° 1920x1080 This is just the math relying on the specs. According to this the FOV (not the resolution, that is higher on HDZero) on 4:3 is bigger in the Skyzones while being equal in 16:9. So, if the 4:3 in the HDZero apprear bigger than th3 4:3 in the Skyzone, I am wrong. Can you explain me were the mistake could be?

I really appreciate your opinion! That's the reason I wonder what is wrong! But I believe I found the answer. The given FOV is always for the diagonal. With this the table would be: Skyzone 4:3 46° 1280x960 HDZero 4:3 38.3° 1440x1080 Skyzone 16:9 46° 1280x720 HDZero 16:9 42.6° 1920x1080 Coser but still... I would just have loved a 4:3 panel. Anyhow, not that anybody get me wrong. I am a big fan of the system and soon I'll see myself as the order is already placed. I just wonder why the felt FOV can be bigger in the HDZero goggles.

Last correction... did this in the night and mixed the values for both goggles in 16:9 Skyzone 4:3 46° 1280x960 HDZero 4:3 38.3° 1440x1080 Skyzone 16:9 42.6° 1280x720 HDZero 16:9 46° 1920x1080 The values are rounded and confirmed by Ryan Quillet. So unluckily I am right and in 4:3 the FOV of the HDZeros is smaller. For sure this is subjective... but I would have loved a bigger FOV in 4:3. I believe 4:3 is better ratio for FPV... at least for me.
