Despite leaning more towards analog and Walksnail, these goggles may actually serve both of those purposes better than anything else. It's completely insane that this one does secondary functions better than competitors do it as their primary.

For sure. This is where Fatshark really could pay a serious price for not including ANY input options - a seemingly simple decision but with potentially catastrophic consequences… Very few people are ready to fully commit to a single video protocol, and even if they were, lots of us fly whoops and need an option for analog. A fatshark goggle with analog capability would have at least maintained potential for a competitive slot in the market, but once WS released that module, they kinda put a nail in Fatshark’s coffin… WS/Caddx will probably be able to stay relevant just by selling VTx’s, cams, and modules (not to mention Caddx’s other product line), but I really struggle to find any reason to buy FS/WS goggles at all.

@@Vousie That's exactly why my next googles will be HDZero. The best analog experience, an HD system with fixed lag, lightweight vtx and decent resolution. I hope they improve on penetration, wich I am confident given the age of the system. Plus it will only get cheaper when other companies start building for the system. That's the importance of open source, wich also gave ELRS a big advantage over RapidFire, Tracer and Ghost.

  • @Vousie

@@miquelmarti6537 I've considered HDZero (and for a while I thought I'd buy it), but the way it breaks up really bothers me (I prefer analog by far) and it's not quite HD. But Walksnail said they're trying to do fixed latency - and given that in the same announcement they also promised a whoop vtx and a vrx module, both of which they've now delivered, I'm inclined to believe that if it's technologically possible, then they will make it work. (Unlike DJI who have made many promises and either not delivered or only half-delivered.)

Just a heads up for anyone wanting the Wi-Fi module. It’s not available yet. The current (V1) analog module sells for $30. When the Wi-Fi capable version (V2) comes out, the V1 module will no longer be available to buy. The V2 will sell for $60, but the owners of the V1 will be able to spend $30 (which is the difference in price between the V1 and V2) to get the V2 PCB which can be installed instead of the V1.

In the comparison between the HDZero and O4X I thought the O4x looked slightly better, but that could just have been the DVR. I think HDZero should consider a goggle without the analog component. For the ones that have finally let go and moved on from analog. It might be cheaper and lighter.

Great review as always, Ian, thank you! I'm really tempted to buy these goggles but I'm a little afraid I will have a problem with my rather large IPD of around 72 mm. I've only owned box goggles until now. So I don't have a feeling if the maximum IPD of 70 mm of these goggle will be a problem for me. I would actually be willing to modify the housing of the goggles with my trusty Dremel. And looking at the CAD model available on Github I think it might be possible to gain another mm on each of the adjustment sliders. But as the model does not include all parts of the goggle I cannot be sure. Maybe you can comment on that when you inevitably take apart these goggles?

I'm about to buy new goggles soon (coming from analog with the eachine 800d). The only other goggles i ever tried are the dji v2 (flying) and the g2 (just put them on for a few mins in a dji store). I don't like the fit of the v2 but the g2 were comfortable in my opinion. Just had small issues to get sharp corners. Since the dvr is not always representative for what you actually see: can anyone who tried both the goggles 2 and the new hdzero goggles, tell me if the difference in image quality is that big? which of both goggles do you prefer for freestyle and flying around for exploring and flying around with friends? I'm not racing so often and just want to have the best total expierence. And more important: I don't want to invest 1000€+ to get a hyped system that actually isn't really better than some of the alternatives :) thank you

have you tried it ? without being a racer or even a good pilot, I can tell you than the reduced latency makes a real difference. \But maybe I'm weird, sims give me motion sickness because of the latency between the tx and the pc. @@metalfpv I was flying analog for some time, but no personal experience with HDZero or other digital system except DJI. Would definitely like to try one though! I'm not quick enough to be able to correct myself based on what I see in the googles constantly. I fly based on feeling (projecting myself to the quad itself) and if the quad is suddenly a meter lower or made the corner too wide I adjust my inputs the second time I'm doing the trick / fly the same corner. I'm also not pushing the FPV/RC link to its limits so even the "variable latency system" out there is giving me +-5 ms constant latency and that's not noticeable (not only for me). I don't have motion sickness issues even in VR games (on PC), where the latency goes to the roof if your PC is not up to the task. I guess I'm lucky I don't have this issue...

30 fps goggle video is bad. Check out video of the Avata flying at 30 fps. It’s almost unflyable due to the stuttering. I wouldn’t get too excited. Putting an ND filter on makes it even worse due to the motion blur. Personally I like 120 fps and can’t understand why anyone would ever want to fly below 60 fps 🤷‍♂️

I hope to get some lenses for them one day. I am learning more each time I use them and the 2 flights I've managed with them have been night and day compared to my cobra x v2 goggles, though they work with my glasses well. Can't wait to figure things out and relax enough to really enjoy them. Thanks again Ian for your honest work.

I only fly analog at this point in time. The possibilities these goggles present is tremendous, however to get them for analog and someday HD makes them a $700 to $800 set of goggles, even at the current discounted price. You have to be able to say I am definitely going to fly digital. Otherwise they are not financially justifiable. This of course only applies if you have any type of budget that isn't unlimited. If you are going to fly HDZero, well then, WOW!!! They are cheaper than good analog goggles.

This is what this goggle has done for me. I run HDZero, Avatar and analog on this goggle, and have been happy, very happy! The O3/G2 is beautiful, but feels bad in the air, was a novelty for a couple of weeks but I ditched it because it caused huge problems flying with others, they can only use channel 1 and 8 or get knocked out of the air randomly. Super sad. But honestly it wasn’t a viable flying experience for me, just bothered me in flight, a lot honestly. I never could fly like I want, in the month I forced myself to used it, and the few weeks I owned and flew every day. I just couldn’t get used to the weird lagging.

@@abertheham the V2 with O3 is a horrible experience, I think DJI optimized everything in the O3 system for the G2. With that combination, it looks absolutely amazing honestly! You will be super happy with O3, it is a very cool experience! Just not for me, and my style. But it literally could be perfect for you, don’t let my opinion sway you, at all. For picture quality, it is breathtaking, and the shadow detail is amazing with the G2 goggle, on the V2s I couldn’t fly or see in the shadows, at all. When I switched to the G2 I could explore in near pitch dark in this decrepit factory I was flying, I couldn’t even go inside it with the V2s. It is a VERY, different experience, and I definitely do not recommend you use the V2 goggles. But as with everything, don’t just take my word for it, or anyone else’s to be honest, please try it yourself. You will see what I mean. @@abertheham image settings don’t work unfortunately, but maybe you will have better luck. Firmware DOES change, so things might be different now, I completely dropped DJI a few weeks ago, and maybe things have changed since? I dropped DJI after the havoc O3 caused flying with others (and the fact most are not flying it in my area), definitely not a social system, unless everyone runs it, but just on principle I’m done with it. Plus honestly I have been enjoying the consistent latency of Avatar. Vistas can still be sold for good money. The majority run DJI, so the system will always have a good size user base, and if you fly only with DJI pilots I would say, stick with it, it’s a great system honestly. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck, and hope you find what you are looking for. After playing with everything I finally found something I fell in love with, HDZero goggle! Cost of import is going to be an issue, upto 20% can be levied and thats before "administration" costs of the courier (such as Royal mails weird handling fees they sometimes attach to imports). I've been burned this way before on aircraft camera mounts, paying a total of around 30% of the original costs in charges alone! The goggles look great but with costs these goggles could get to £700 easily depending on exchange rate and costs! Hopefully HDZero will let retailers and dealers do B2B shipping to minimise the costs to potential customers.
