HD DVD Pickups | The Cheap Movie Collection

For a while I've tried to decide what obsolete film format I would collect for.
After a lot of thought it was obvious. HD DVD is both nostalgic and fun to collect for.
In this video I unbox the first stack of films that I recently purchased.
Did you back HD DVD during the war?
Have you never seen a HD DVD?
Let me know your thoughts and memories in the comments section.
Thanks for Watching :)

I do still watch VHS almost daily I understand they aren’t for everyone, but recently started getting into HD DVD I kept finding them at thrift stores finally pulled the trigger because of Dukes of Hazard never getting a blu-ray. Worked perfect even though it’s a Warner Brothers title. So now I’m hooked hunting for stuff we didn’t get in the US or I didn’t already own on another format.

Oh man. Doom. Batman begins. King Kong. Dawn of the dead. Shaun of the dead. Pure mid 00s nostalgia right there :). Apart from king Kong I watched all those in cinema. I always liked the idea of HDDVD over Blu Ray. Real Shame it lost to the format war. For me personally my format of choice is still DVDs :) lol. I have a blu ray player and a bunch of films for it but realistically I'd rather just watch my DVDs upscaled to HD and that looks good enough for me. Most of it is down to nostalgia but I just love the DVD format overall. I can remember getting my original DVD player in early 2003. Along with Spiderman and Ali G indahouse. Still have my original copies to this day. Great 00s memories :).

The first Xbox HD-DVD player I got was missing the PSU. The seller said "I thought is was powered through the USB" = Idiot ! Later on I got a Tosh... then when in CEX I saw a cheap Xbox drive (+120 GB Hard Drive and 5 Games) for £16. I have 3 flippers = The Departed, The Matrix and 'Chuck & Larry' Ooops forgot the 'Hotel Babylon Series 1' discs :)

Used to get them in cex for 50p. My fave setup still has to be the Matrix boxset (first film) running off the 360 hddrive...rocking like it's 2005. Interesting video, Pete. You’ve got some nice movies, a couple of which I didn’t realise were on the format. I started picking up HD-DVDs in 2008, when I came back from my first stint in China. They were dirt cheap compared to Blu Ray, so I couldn’t resist. I’ve still got about 60 to 70 discs in my movie collection and have held on to the despite hardly ever watching one. I tried Unforgiven a few months back but it didn’t work. Now I know about the common problem with WB discs, thanks to you, I realise that it probably never worked. However, I haven’t had any other issues with WB discs that I can remember. I’ve got the box set with the first five Potter movies, and I’m sure they all worked. The picture quality of Tremors was one that I remember being impressed by back in the day. I’ll have to try it again and see if it holds up. Thanks for making the video, Pete. It has made me want to revisit my HD-DVD collection and watch a few movies.

Glad I could inspire you give your films a watch mate. Its a great format to revisit. I'll be posting a vid of my beautiful Toshiba HD DVD Player next.

Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD was an odd format war for sure especially because during the 2000s it was already clear the real winner was going to be some sort of Internet service. There is something quite unsettling for me about all those post DVD physical formats and that's how close to using a software on a computer the experience is at times. I mean, If I have to deal with updating the firmware, I might as well go fully digital.

Nice to see you finding a groove though with film and TV, it's obviously one of your major passions and it shows. Shame about the Warner Bros movies, shocking that was allowed to happen. I mean I suppose it would be a curious oddity to still have the full WB set but depending on how many there are and how expensive, that could be a bit excessive 😂 Wouldn't mind watching Total Recall again...could you bring yourself to watch the 2012 remake Pete or have you avoided it? 😅

Nice one Pete - I’m a big movie collector (probably more so than games these days) I just go with Blu Ray and 4K for ease - standard Blu Ray is dirt cheap these days, if you shop around in charity shops or even eBay, so don’t really see a reason to go for a off beat format, but if you have nostalgia for it go for it 🙂👍 when you get into the boutique labels like criterion and second sight it gets as expensive as game collecting lol. I upgrade to 4K for movies I love but don’t see the point replacing the blu ray usually. I have a great player that does 4K, all regions of Blu Ray and DVD so I’m pretty set. Interesting about Warner Bros HD-DVD’s - they were rather notorious in the DVD era for producing discs that would get disc rot - a lot of people think it’s mainly caused by bad storage of the owner (and it is to some degree) but a lot of the time it was a manufacturing error, such as using sterilised water to wash them off in the factory, which would later rust. I wonder if WB carried this over into HD-DVD.

  • @Snestastic

Thanks Mate, Yeah Blu-Rays are real cheap as well which makes film buying much easier. I picked up Jason Bourne in a charity shop recently for £2. And that reminds me that I forgot to include it in my recent blu ray vid lol.. Thanks for the info. I've not found anyone who explained exactly what EB did wrong with the production. Real shame that such a big company could make such a rookie mistake.

@@Snestastic Yeah I see you touched on the disc rot issue - I must admit I commented before watching the whole thing. In fairness I’ve heard quite recently about people been able to contact WB and get DVDs in rare box sets replaced for free, but I can’t see them doing it for HD-DVD as it won’t be in production anymore, plus as it’s based in America it would probably be too much of a pain for the UK anyway. I had an insane DVD collection in the early 2000’s (literally hoarding, my whole first flat didn’t have a room except the toilet that didn’t have DVD storage - 80% of it ended up in a charity shop because I couldn’t have my girlfriend at the time round without looking a nut case 😂) this collection included a load of region B Warner Bros DVDs and I have to say I don’t ever remember an issue, so I wonder if it was a problem exclusive to America and we used a different process.

  • @Snestastic

    @Snestastic

@@Dessan01 lol no worries I'd do that all the time 😂 Yeah I did wonder if it was an American issue as well.
