HD DVD Collection 2018 (gone but not forgotten)

Ойындар

Launched April 18, 2006 - Dissolved March 28, 2008. HD DVD didn't last long on the market, but it did have some great movies in its library. Some you can't find on any other type of media. The quality of picture and sound is the same as Blu Ray, but we all know how Sony won that battle due to the popularity of the Playstation 3. Thanks for watching and enjoy.

There both 1080p, you're correct! The difference is there are no 4k scanned HD DVD but there are 4K scanned blu-ray which they call it a 2k blu-ray!

If you haven't checked your batch of warner titles for a while i would advise you to check them up from time to time as they are all prone to rot sooner or later ending up either with not playing at all or randomly freezing during the movie. At some point i have owned in my collection all of the HD-DVD ever released (around 811 discs). But within 10 years almost all of the Warner discs turned bad. As of today i only have a handful of those titles still playing fine (a dozen or so) but some of them won't last long as they are already showing early signs of rot (when you flip the disc, the color of the readable side shifts from silver to light gold when it starts to rot). It's a resin problem that was aknowledged by warner and for which they had set-up a huge worldwide exchange program between 2008 and 2010 in order to replace faulty discs with their bluray counterparts at no cost for the unlucky owners.

Payback is one of my favorite Mel Gibson movies. Like you I had puchased some HD DVD bundles and have a busload of extra copies . I got into HD DVD in 2020. Have multple players including The Xbox 360 one ,LG bluray/HD DVD combo player, multiple Toshiba players, and a PC with a Bluray/HDDVD combo drive. One thing i hate is when I ordered an Elvis Presley movie in HD DVD from Amazon some time ago ,when It arrived it would not play in any of my players😒. I have not even watched a lot of the HD DVD's in my collection. I'm on LDDB as tw350z.

Did you have any problems with the Warner Bros. movies not working because they had disc rot

Sorcerers Stone was brand new sealed and won’t play. Not for disc rot but just the way the earlier discs were manufactured. Later releases work fine.

HD DVD was better thin Blu-Ray because of its menu and artwork and picture quality

Menu and artwork are negligible at best. Picture quality was definitely not better then blu ray you can get of here with that one.

@@marlonrobalino it's actually exactly the same. Some of the earlier Blu Rays were actually really bad because certain studios used the MPEG 2 codec. HD DVD did not really use this codec. They used VC1 and AVC/MPEG4 codecs. Blu Rays now use AVC. A side by side comparison of the same movie on HD DVD and a Blu Ray using the AVC codec look exactly the same. Believe me, I have both formats, all the fan boys can spout off nonsense about the better format, but In reality there was very little difference between them. And definitely not enough for the average consumer to notice. The only thing Blu Ray did tend to do better in some cases was the audio. More Blu Rays contained uncompressed DTS Master Audio or Dolby True HD than HD DVD at the time. Alot of HD DVDs, not all of them used Dolby Digital Plus, which is compressed. But the average joe without a surround sound system would not know any difference. Especially if you are using TV speakers.

@@bubba842 I'll agree with you to an extent that alot of the blu rays and hd dvd were about the same video quality at the time besides the audio. But the reason why blu rays were better especially in the long run was the 50 gb dual layer space versus hd dvd maximum 30 gb. Less compression was just better picture quality and more uncompressed audio options. At the time most tv sizes were really in the range of 32 gb to 40 inches which I agree to most people didn't make a huge difference between the format. Now we have much better tvs and projectors going over 100 inches easy. Having that extra space when mastered correctly really does make a big difference even to the average consumer.

@@marlonrobalino I don't disagree that Blu Ray has come a long way since it's inception. Personally, I don't think Blu Ray utilized it's full potential from 2006 to 2008, with many early releases looking sub par, compared to HD DVD, mostly the MPEG2 releases. But the higher bit rate does not always equal a better picture. Mostly it comes down to the source material, the production studios transfer capabilities and the efficiency of the codec used; how well that codec compresses it's content. Of the 3 codecs that HD formats use, MPEG2, AVC and VC1, MPEG 2 actually has the highest bit rate, but looks the worse of the 3. I watch HD DVDs on a 55 inch television, through my X Box 360, and don't see any difference between the HD DVDs and watching the same Blu Ray release on my PS3.
