[HD] Chasing the Amtrak Siemens Charger Test Train: Emeryville to Yuba Gap (02/02/2020)

Chasing Amtrak's Siemens SC-44 Charger Test Train from Emeryville to Yuba Gap up on Donner Pass. This was one of the most epic chases I've ever done. Not just because of the train we were chasing (one of the very rare times we've chased an Amtrak train), but because of the crazy weather changes through the Chase, from sunny in Emeryville to an increasingly heavy snowstorm that ended our chase at Yuba Gap.
The purpose of this test train was to see how well the Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives would perform in long-distance service as Amtrak hopes to purchase them as replacements for the aging P42DCs. The train ran from Chicago to Seattle along the Empire Builder route, from Seattle to Oakland on the Coast Starlight route, and from Oakland back to Chicago on the California Zephyr route. Locations for this chase are as follows: Emeryville, Crockett, Webster (West Yolo Causeway), Newcastle, Carpenter Road (Colfax), Casa Loma, and Yuba Gap.

I thought that Siemens SC44 #4628 (2nd in consist) looked familiar. Two weeks later after this video was shot, it was the lead locomotive for California Zephyr on a return trip from Chicago to Emeryville CA when a cement mixer truck crossed it's path 19-miles east of Reno. Both the truck and locomotive were severely damaged. In this video Siemens SC44 #4627 is in lead, but on day of accident, #4628 was paired with #4632. It has since been towed back to Chicago for rebuild. I can't wait until Amtrak Cardinal gets a new Siemens SC44 locomotive. Right now they are saying some time in 2021-22 time frame.

Nice stuff Jamie. How frequently are they doing long distance testing? I still have yet to see a long distance Charger lead consist for myself.
