I heard about the Cubs curse in 1969 when they blew a huge lead to the Mets, who went on to beat Baltimore, quite handily I might add. My Pirates haven't won it since 1979.

It was talked about but not as much as the Red Sox curse which involved a more high profile team, the greatest player of all time, and a much simpler story than the 1919 Black Sox (which is still being debated today) plus Boston had many more close calls in their 80+ year drought.

Boston is a one baseball team town and had Dan Shaughnessy has pushed the curse through his newspaper columns and written a book about it. Also Boston has gotten sooooo close so many times. The White Sox are a second fiddle team in their own city with no legendary beat writers following them and don't have the tragic near miss history.

I feel blessed to live in the times when the Sox have won FOUR World Series titles since this documentary was made. I can only hope that those who never got to witness what we have witnessed have experienced it wherever they may be. Go Sox!

Remember Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, because they were by means true athletes, and yes it is true that these gentlemen did not make their job playing baseball, they were some people who treated their baseball careers as a service to their country, because they were all about teaching the game to other people. So do not overestimate Ruth, Dimaggio, and Mantle, and then underestimate Musial, Mays, and Banks they way you talk about just how great you claim Ruth was!

I’m a longtime Yankees fan and I cheered when Bucky Dent hit the homer in the 78 playoff game, but even I felt terrible for the Red Sox fans when that ball went through Buckner’s legs. It really did seem like fate just wouldn’t let them win.

They deserved it from ‘87 to ‘04, since they basically hated on Buckner so bad he had to move his whole family to Idaho eventually.

It asked at sometime at the beginning of the video, why didn't Enos SlaughterStop at third base? the reason slaughter didn't stop at third base was Because earlier in that game, he was in a similar situation and he did stop at Third base. the Cardinals Manager told him, if you ever get in a situation like That again and you think you can score, go for it. I'll be responsible for what Happens(in the earlier situation, slaughter thought he could score from Third Base. but the third base coach held him up at third)

This 2003 documentary, " The Curse of the Bambino" is emblematic of why HBO Sports makes the best sports documentaries! Even if you are not a Red Sox fan, if you are not crying by the end of this documentary about the gut-wrenching failures and losses the Red Sox experienced season after season after season until they finally won it all in 2004 to end 86 years of frustration, then you have a heart made of cement!

I'm a Yankee fan and I wanted to watch this to savor in the sorrows of Red Sox fans everywhere. I left with a new found appreciation of you damn Sox fans. DAMN IT!

It's amazing how much emphasis in 86 is put on Buckner & game 6. Yea it was really an insane comeback but they had a game 7! It's like that game is forgotten.

Not a Red Sox fan. I was in the Navy when they won in 2004, and I remember when they did. My division chief WAS a fan. A huge one. That month, when they beat the Yankees, and then won the world series, you could have fucked up every way possible, and he wouldn't have cared. The Red Sox had won.

Not baseball related but our Master Chief rode my ass for years, then he found out we were from the same home state.(He softened his approach, not by much though).

The Red Sox and Yankees rivalry was fantastic to watch as a baseball fan. Now when they play it's like watching Two Yankees Teams. Both are equally rich, with massive followings playing each other to add to their trophy collections. Doesn't have the drama or excitement as it used to. Either one of the two Franchises winning a Championship is met with a groan or an eye roll of baseball fans outside of Boston and New York.

The Detroit Lions need to make a documentary on the Curse of Bobby Layne and maybe the curse can be lifted lol. The Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 after making this documentary, just a coincidence

@@writingmaster3008 I have tried to acquaint myself about LFC and there a lot of parallels there. A great club and fan base in the wilderness for too many years. When John Henry looked into purchasing the club he publicaly stated that the similarity with the Red Sox were overwhelmingly - the fan intensity (some ball players avoid Boston for this reason, others seek it out) the historic stadium, the colours, the history. I think the Fenway Group warrant similar success for Liverpool that they have achieved in Boston for the Red Sox.. Boston is unusual in that the ownership groups for major sports interact more than any other American city honoring each others accomplishments and trying to give advice on maintainig a winning organization. The NFL New England Patriots have held seminars for FSG regarding this. In the last twenty years Boston has the greatest champion run accross four sports in US historyl Boston fans are probably more familiar with world football than Liverpool fans are with baseball but it would be great if both fan bases could see a connection. When the Red Sox play the New YorkYankees (our analogy ito Man U) in London this summer it might encourage it. After all our New England Patriots are the most popular NFL team in the UK., Good luck with your work.

Don mattingly was a curse against the yanlees and he was sitting on the other dugout as the hitting coach in the 2004 alcs

I have alot of memories of all the let downs and disappointed seasons...mostly in the 70's and early 80's when school was out for the summer and i would spend most of it with my grand parents. My grandfather had a legit score book and watched every televised game and would actually keep score..it was quite fun , I only wished he could of seen them win a championship before dying.

The daughter of Babe Ruth said I believe the 'Babe' would be rooting for the Red Sox this time! I know you hate me because I'm a Yankees fan but I don't share the same hate. Congratulations Boston Red Sox! It is 2018 and I'm rooting for the New York Yankees to win the AL Championship Series and World Series. At least I know there will be 19 playoff games during the regular season between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. That 1986 loss was felt in 1993 when Philadelphia lost to Toronto. That F-cking homerun. It makes me so sick and I love baseball history I fast forward past that moment.

I wish I had a picture of my face when Rajai Davis hit that two run homer in the 2016 series. What a fucking nightmare scenario. The best closer in baseball and hadn't given up a homer since mid-season, so of course he gives up the biggest home run in Indians' modern history. I would have gone back to the locker room and cried, too.

Then a year after this was made the Red Sox make one of the filthiest teams the league has ever seen and win it all...

I saw the Pesky play - he halted for a less that a second the way any infielder would to line up the throw and a cannon was not going to get Slaughter out. The real story was that star center fielder Dom Dimaggio was injured and his sub did not field the ball cleanly allowing Slaughter to score.

Charles - go look at the video again. The ball was hit much closer to the left fielder TED WILLIAMS, than it was to the Center Fielder, Leon Culberson. It took an extra second or two to even to get the ball to Pesky, because Ted Williams didn't hustle to get the ball. Unless Williams was hurt, he is at fault for this.

@@Marcaron17 Looked at the tape and it was difficult for me to see whether Williams - who had a pretty good arm - was in a better position to make the play. You might be right but I have never read that particular analysis, There were several other issues - it seemed to me that Slaughter got way too big a jump and the pitcher should have held him closer to the bag in such a tight significant game, It also seemed that Culberson should have charged the ball to get it into the infield as soon as possible, which he didn't, and he didn't seem so deep when he made the play that he could have thrown over the cutoff man for the plate to nail Slaughter if the throw was anywhere on line. Dimaggio with a great arm I think would have likely made that choice.

They compiled "The Reverse Of The Curse Of The Bambino" with most of this special. I wish they waited one year and put this whole show with the addendum of the 2004 World Series win and its aftermath.

They sound just like how us Cubs fans used to sound. The undying love mixed with the crushing blackness of a cursed history. The only difference is the New England flavor to it all. But hey, our clubs reached the promised land recently, so let's look back on this with the knowledge that the pain and misery is over.

They sure ain't crying in 2018.

After watching the documentary I in 2003, I told anyone who would listen that least they'd got to WS. Until 2016 I I didn't get to see my Cubs win NL Pennant. Now we BoSox and Cubs fans( like myself) Igot to celebrate. Thank God Congrats for both teams ❤️❤️❤️❤️!!

Good documentary, got a lot of family from Massachusetts and I visit regularly. They tell me how miserable it used to be. But I find it funny on the way to the 1986 world series the Sox crushed the hopes of the LA Angels and then the Angel's went on to win the World Series before the Sox did.

It's weird watching this now, with '04 being the very next year. I got married while the '04 ALCS was happening, and my best man and I watched this documentary the night before the wedding with the Sox down 0-2. They lost the next night to go down 0-3. Then in happened. The steal, Papi's back-to-back walkoff's, Big Schill and ARod's slap in game 6, and Damon in game 7. It's still surreal, and I watched each night as it happened. I've seen countless great moments in sports during my lifetime; Gibson in 88, Giants-Bills in 90, Jordan's Bulls, Kobe's 81, Tiger Woods' rise & sudden fall, countless others. The Sox in 04 tops them all.

Nah, Buckner's blunder tops them all. 1986 was the most improbable comeback in sports history. 04 was great though, because I hate the Yankees. Nice that they own the biggest collapse in post season history. But the Red Sox own the biggest single game collapse in baseball history.

Broadway producer Harry Frazee owned the frequently sold Red Sox from 1916-1923. He had promoted the Jack Johnson-Jess Willard fight on April 5, 1915, in Havana, Cuba. Broadway Harry sold more than Ruth from the Red Sox. He dumped Carl Mays, whose brilliant pitching would help the Yankees to their first World Series in 1921 when he won 27 games. He also traded HoF pitcher Waite Hoyt and Catcher Wally Schang. Pitcher Harry Harper and utility player Mike McNally. These trades would start a relationship between the Red Sox and the Yankees, even after Frazee was no longer the owner, that would last throughout the 1920s, where Boston would trade good players to the Yanks for so-so players. The most famous of these other trades would be Hof pitcher Red Ruffing for Cedric Durst and $50,000.

A curse is something placed upon a person/organization by someone specifically, as when the guy with the billy goat cursed the Cubs. Ruth never cursed the Red Sox. This is the Bad Trade Karma of the Bambino. Sadly, both of these "curses" were ruined. Baseball lost some of its magic forever when the Sox and Cubs finally won the series. Good documentary though!

Don't forget the Detroit Lions, they haven't won a Championship since they traded Bobby Layne to Pittsburgh.(1959 I think. I was 3 yrs old)

I am a lifelong Yankees fan. But I dig the Red Sox. Where I grew up - down south- there was no arguing and bad grudges about sports. I just loved baseball. And I do not believe in some kind of a curse on the Sox. No way. Think of it this way- Babe played for the Red Sox. He was there and he did very well. He was a great pitcher for the Sox. Dwelling on "curses" will not get wins. Appreciating the old timers who came before us all is the key . I adore the classic line ups of both teams. All the line ups. The Red Sox are not a disappointment. Not at all. And this wonderful team is certainly not "regular. "Regularity" ? Hell no. Peace and much love to The Yankees and the Sox. ♥
