Taker did an interview earlier this year saying he told Vince that he needed to be in the loop if stuff like this was going to happen again. Adwaith Ratnakaran That last part is a lie told by everyone. Bischoff confirmed that Bret’s contract with Vince ended in December, so they weren’t allowed to debut him then. The other part is, Vince won a huge settlement in court after the Madusa debut on Nitro in December of 95 (showing up with the WWF women’s title on Nitro). There was no way that Bischoff would try to do that again.

I appreciate that the Undertaker was so well respected not because he was the biggest, not because he was the most popular, not because he was the best, not because he was the toughest, but because how he handled himself in his early days and gained the respect of those that came before him. Truly a tale of giving respect gets respect.

Honestly, listening to this, I think that Shawn's injury during the Casket Match at the 1998 Royal Rumble couldn't have come at a better time (not that I wrestlers to be injured). Rather than performing with a locker room and in front of a crowd with festering resentment, he disappeared practically right after the Montreal Screwjob, stayed out of sight and out of mind for four years and let time heal the wound, and returned to an immense wave of love and goodwill.

It may be the case that wrestlers feel more exposed when speaking candidly out of character. Their own personal character is on display when discussing personal stuff so they cant hide behind the gimmick. Shawn hickenbottom was speaking here. It's like when actors appear shy compared to their characters when they get up on stage to deliver their oscar speech.

Fun Fact: The night before Survivor Series '97, WWF held a house show at Cobo Hall in Detroit. My family and I were in attendance and the fact that Bret was leaving for WCW was no secret to wrestling fans in the know. The Hart Foundation was in the main event and near the start of that match the crowd was chanting, "Why Bret, why?" Hitman put one foot on the bottom rope, hoisted himself up just slightly, and rubbed his thumb to his index and middle fingers to indicate it was for the money. It was such a heel move and the crowd ate it up!

Suffering turmoil going through the shows 1996/1997 with a total bore bullshit roster! I was real happy for Shawn following his development since early 1992 climbing to the very top as 'small guy' with no nepotism, but the early 90s will always be my favorites on him and in general! Shawn took the job. He knew that the Locker room was going to turn, but he created the situation when he told Bret that he wouldn’t put him over the same way Bret would be doing for him. He created the crap storm. Vince used him to create the villain that would be turning the title over to Stone Cold Steve Austin. He was just a holder for that moment

I'm sure he would have much perfered brett losing to someone else and then him beating that person to avoid the heat. However , he may not have cared about the heat due to his closeness with Vince but it has to suck having the entire locker room hate and not trust you if you're susposed to be family and run the road 330 days a year.

Even though Shaun new what was going on, I in no way blame him for any of what transpired. I know that had to weigh heavy on his heart. The heartbreak kid is and will always be my favorite wrestler ever. Thank you Shaun for the years of entertainment.

Brett didn't want to leave the company with the belt, he said he'd drop it the next night on RAW. He said he didn't want to drop the belt in a PPV on his 'home turf'. First off for an Alberta boy to think of Montreal as his home turf.... that's questionable and secondly for Hart to think he can call shots like that seemed to be fairly egotistical. I don't think there's really any good guys in this story, but at the end of the day it's vince's company and he can do what he wants. Also vince gave hart the option of dropping the belt with Michaels cheating, allowing him to save maximum face.

  • @smellywilly2854

@@claytonberg721 obviously the stories changes a lot, but it was the disrespect that Shawn Michaels had for Bret that made Bret not want to give him the belt. Bret let Shawn know that he was willing to give him the belt anyway he wanted, but Shawn said he won’t do the same for him. Shawn saying that made him not want to give the belt. Bret told Vince about this altercation but Vince did nothing about it and just had the match.

  • @234CHRISTY

Well you clearly don't know what had happened if you say Shawn had nothing to do with it or was not the part of it. When Bret decided to leave WWF Vince and Bret were in mutual agreement that Bret can leave the company in any way he want. But later on HBK and HHH convinced Vince that Bret should not be leaving the company with the belt. Despite the fact that Bret had agreed to drop belt next day. So Shawn's ego came into place and he wanted to beat Bret so that he remains number 1 and the number 2 guy goes to WCW.

Im a big shawn michaels fan always have been. But shawn definitely plays a part in why this whole thing went down. Shawn did not originally want to do business with bret and was kind of outright rude to bret. That pissed bret off and now bret doesnt wanna do business either. Now that pisses vince off. Vince forces the business to happen by tricking bret. So shawn definitely does play a part in the screwjob. He doesnt deserve all the blame but he deserves some
