I love stoves and after watching this video was reason enough for me to add to my collection! Anyway, he’s lucky I don’t collect diamond jewelry which I don’t care for so he’s getting off very cheaply is my reasoning!

I made an alcohol burner from a mini Altoids tin just like these burners, with mesh and carbon felt. Fits perfectly inside the issue type esbit stove. Holds almost an ounce. Cheap as dirt. The raised tin lid can act as a windbreak on one side of the stove.

I did something similar, I used a round Crossman tin with a screw on lid for pellets. Also made one from a Nivea skin creme tin.

Ive been using a near identical setup for over 15 yrs now. Larger mint tin in Esbit stand x2. Found a zippered pouch that neatly holds the two. Slim bottle of methanol in the empty space alongside the stove. Made my stoves with hardware cloth over mesh over Perlite, bought a 3rd tin to cut the lid into variable sections i could use on the first two stoves to regulate flame and fuel use. Ive made a dozen different stoves using carbon felt and efficient designs, and they work well enough, but this scuffed old Altoids setup keeps doing it the best for me and not using too much fuel. So i keep using them. Got Snowed inside for 4 days with the visiting in-laws few years ago with power outage for 37 hours. My father in law was impressed that i had 2 "burners" going in the kitchen and kept the crew in hot food and drinks until the power was restored. These things are great. Thanks for the video..✌️

Hey Ernie. Giving a Trangia stove to my auntie for Christmas along with your video for that. I combined it with a 64 oz Pathfinder billy can, an Eldris, UCO storm matches, BIC and a hank of 550. Love your videos.

I make similar burners from Camel SNUS cans (I got them from my son, so they were free to me). I originally cut small strips of corrugated cardboard (also free) and wound them up tightly inside of the can, then I switched to 2 layers of carbon felt ($14.00 per sheet, but one sheet makes 4 burners). The lid to the SNUS cans have a rubber gasket so extra fuel (91% rubbing alcohol) left over in the burner will not leak out. I use 5 hour energy bottles for fuel storage (free after I consume the contents). I bought some $8.00 folding Esbit stoves from Amazon, and it boils two cups of water in like 8 minutes. I estimate each stove costs me around $11.00 not counting my labor.

I made an alcohol stove from a mini Altoids tin, carbon felt, and a piece of screen mesh. I've been using it in my Esbit stove with much success. I do like the covers on your stoves that seem to be able to adjust the intensity of the flame.

Fiber glass insulation also works (instead of carbon fiber) if you make your own from Altoids tins.

I purchased this stove and have been expermenting with using just a single burner. My interest is fuel efficiency rather than speed. Using just a single burner in the smaller Esbit folding stove (97mm X 73mm), a Toaks titanium 550 ml pot,15 ml of yellow Heet and 16 ounces of water, I ran three tests for burn time and degrees-Fahrenheit raised. All testing was done in my kitchen under ideal conditions without wind. The first two tests were duplicates. In each case, my tap water was 78°F at the beginning. Test 1 -- The burn ran 17 minutes. I let the fuel completely burn out. The final temperature was 198°F -- an increase of 120°f -- and plenty hot enough for coffee. I believe I could rehydrate a dehydrated or freeze-dried meal with this and a little patience. I then made a piping hot cup of green tea. Test 2 -- Thinking perhaps the low flame in the final 1-2 minutes was insufficient to preserve the highest temperature reached, I ended the test when the flame ceased making contact with the bottom of the pot. The pot was in contact with the flame 15 minutes 21 seconds. The final temperature was 192°F -- an increase of 114°F -- suggesting there may be additional heat to be gained from that last minute or so of dying flame. I turned this test result into a piping hot cup of chamomile tea. Test 3 -- Using water I had left in the refrigerator overnight, I began this test with 16 ounces of water at 42°F. I wanted to know how the burner would perform at a more realistic water temperature found in the field. I was expecting to end up with a significantly smaller gain in temperature, but the opposite occurred. I have no explanation. The burn lasted 16 minutes 40 seconds and the final temperature was 182°F -- an increase of 142°F -- more than sufficient to rehydrate the package of ramen I had for my lunch, following a 10-minute soak.

You just know I'll be playing with my Esbit stove by the end of the day. 😀

One could even take out the inserts for the liquid alcohol and then fill the alcohol tins with Swissmar Fire Gel (blue) as an ad hoc fondue to be able to use a third fuel type. Many consider the Fire Gel to be safer to use in the field so it would be an improvement to the kit.

Hi.i use a old British army stove like yours but use a spent 8 hour candle base filled with meths spirit.A boil is always ready within a 5 or 6 minutes weather permitting. A wind shield is a big help. 👍👍thanks for your video and time. Keep on cooking.👍🍳

I can't believe this video has just popped up on my youtube I have just had 2 of the smaller versions of those alcohol burners delivered. They fit into the smaller version of the stove, widely available on the likes of Amazon, AliExpress, etc. Test burn this evening, (using only 1 of the burners) 400ml of water boiled in about 5 mins (enough for 1 persons brew or a dehydrated meal) and burnt for about 7 minutes. Not bad for 20ml of fuel. Like you I am very very impressed with the performance, weight, price, etc. Many thanks for sharing.

few years ago made a large altoid tin alcohol stove. have to dig it out & try it in my tommy cooker. next i'll have to find a couple of mini altoid tins too modify. thanks for the video & info.

I love these, great design. I love Esbit stoves and keep them with the fuel for emergencies, but this will increase the use of these stoves. I have used alcohol stoves with my firebox stoves during power outages, and with these I can use my Esbit stoves for the same thing. thanks, Ernie!

Ernie, thanks for the review. I bought this to go inside my esbit 1100. Might make it more versatile for actual cooking, with the longer burn time and adjustability. In the stove base for the 1100 you can get some nice even rolling blue fame with an altoids tin and gel fuel, so im hoping this will provide the same.

i used to make mesh burners for mamod steam engines out of the bases of wood dye cans, i got bored really fast changing fuel gel blocks and made a dye can insert for an army solid fuel stove that fits in with the stove folded. it works fantastically with a longer burn time.

Yep work just as you described it. I bought mine years ago well a year ago. I thought it would make a great addition to SHTF scenarios just to keep the low profile flame from attracting attention to potential bad buggers. Second keep in an emergency power outage and need that cup of coffee in the morning or to boil water to feed the children something hot. If they are not small children they can use to help feed each other in that type of situation, once shown properly how to use it. Still the man to go to for info. SEMPER FI

I've been looking high and low for a rectangular tin so that I could do something similar with my Firedragon without modifying the tray. The small puck stove I have works great resting on the edges of the "reservoir" for the gel fuel, but it isn't the most stable thing, and I wanted something similar that I could nest in it without too much fuss, but also no worry of tipping it. If the long dimension of these is just right, I may be able to use one with minimum modifications to the gel reservoir and have it be stable. It's nice that they ship it with two burners and a fuel bottle, seems like a great value for the money.

I used a dremel tool to cut out a hole in my dry fuel stove to fit a small trangia spirit burner but I like this better. Just found one on ebay for £5.99 but the burner is one big unit insted of the two small ones......yep I just bought that. Cuppa tea anybody ?

Curious to see what the boil time for one with the lid off is. I'm pretty locked into my current setup for when I'm on the trail, but I'm always open to new stoves/stuff when camping with the scouts or just car camping. I've never been a solid fuel stove guy, but this concept is interesting.

With both of them running, the thermal runaway that occurs with these things will give you a boil time of just over 2 minutes for half a litre of water...lol

The solid fuel Esbit was my first foray into personal stoves, when I was in the Army. I primarily used it for brewing up coffee and tea and cooking up "modified" MRE gourmet meals - back when the MRE selections were much less, and much less appetizing. You had to do something to transform many of them just to make them edible. Having an alternative heat source, like alcohol, really steps up the little fuel tab stove concept.

@@cardiacbob Probably not, since the box said Esbit on it. I still have about a dozen boxes. Fired some up a couple months ago to make some coffee, just to see if they were still any good after just over 30 years. They worked just as well as they did back then. Still had a pack of MRE matches tucked into the box with the tabs, and the matches worked, too.

I like this kit alot and appreciate the video. I would, however, like to see the same tests performed with a single burner. I think it would be interesting to see. Thank you.

Ernie i too have one of these alcohol stoves with a medium sized esbit stove that holds a single burner perfect that being said i had a hard time blowing out a single burner without the simmer slide on piece / so a single one of these alcohol stoves for me was tad bit hard to blow out / but it is very compact and i can choose witch fuel i like being Alcohol or solid fuel tabs ............ Just subbed, I'd love for you to test the Trail Designs Ti Tri. It's crazy to me there are so few videos on it, such a good alcohol stove! It can boil 2 cups in 7 minutes while only using 14g of fuel!

Id love to see the larger insert in action. Curious to see how compatible these are with stoves like the firebox stoves. Too bad you dont have more control on the opening of the stove for simmering.

I bought one of those alcohol stoves made by Menolana, I haven’t tried it yet, but just be careful when you’re opening, and closing the stove, because just about every corner of what I call the teeth ,are sharp Took me about 15 minutes to file down all the corners

I have used tea lights in esbit stoves when I could not get fuel tabs, just another option.

I love the flame control aspect. I cook when I am camping--and the stoves that can't simmer are of no use to me. I enjoy cooking and would never eat freeze dried food.

I was looking at those little burners 2-3 weeks ago and wondered if the burn time would make it worth it or not. Rather surprised by your results given their size.

Have you reviewed that sort of stove before? It's what I've got and will be testing, mine have ceramic wool, but others are carbon felt like those ones...it's a Kojin stove, well a copy. I have the Speedster which is another variant, you can get them from X-Boil, OGE, Des Cattys etc. Might try mine in a hexi stove like that!

These have been issued in uk millitary since 1960, as a solid fuel burner they work. This looks different with liquid fuel. Normaly used with wax pellets. Not fast but do work as pot stand for many fuels, also very cheap to buy.

I still have one of those, with a box of hexamine tablets folded up in it. Used it a couple of years ago when I couldn't find my little petrol burner.

Just watched your latest video on the folding alcohol stove kit. Is there a brand name can't find it on Amazon

Guys, Just grab a metal lid off an old jar and stick any type of wicking in it. Does the same. Play around with different lids for different needs. Works perfectly for free.

Interesting, I wonder if you could make a stand/pot support for one of them . That way it could be UL.

Have you seen the Fire maple mars radiant? It's a remote msr reactor style stove. I wonder how it compares to msr windburner or reactor.

I have something similar .. my Military Issue Esbit Stove from 1968 and an array of Burners made from 200ml Energy Drink Cans filled with Ceramic / Glass Wool and, for a more gentle burn, Whiskey Bottle Tops also packed with Ceramic / Glass Wool. My Esbit Stove gives me the option to use Solid Tablets, Alcohol Liquid and Gel Fuels. Why Alcohol over the Esbit Fuel Tablets? Cost and availability. Here in Switzerland, I can buy the Liquid 'Brennsprit' and Gel 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste' at my local grocery store and most others country-wide and in neighbouring countries, whilst the Esbit Tablets, more expensive, only at selected Outdoor Outlets. I'm currently playing around with 'simmer rings' for the Energy Drink Burners and when I get that right .. 👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Just tried Zippo Lighter fluid in my alcohol stove.. Bloomed almost instantly.. But the flame was about two feet high lol..

My best all around boil time for 2 cups of water on my Trangia is 8 minutes.

What would be the best emergency/‘bugout’ stove and fuel to store in a hot car during the day in the summer sun? Would canisters explode? A bottle of denatured alcohol safe? Solid fuel safest? (esbit seems to take a fair bit of heat to make them burn), a bottle of alcohol gel? Etc

Donno, open container seems like a non-issue to me. If it isn’t drinkable, it isn’t an open container. However, if it occurs, it’s pure dumbassery and society should place a pox upon their house.

My insert went up in flame. So now, i don't bother using it with the reducer. It works great with the original Esbit folding stove. It also works great the pathfinder cup stove. I use it upside down with trivet. The stove becomes a windscreen.

Interesting, thanks for the share. I can't seem to find the single big burner insert you mentioned? Now that the Origo alcohol heaters have been discontinued I've been wondering lately why an "extra large trangia" doesn't exist out there somewhere, something with at least say double the capacity for double the burn time.

Biggest Tangia style burner I have seen is from Self Reliance Outfitters, they offer a new burner that holds 4.5 oz of fuel and is the same size as the Trangia/SVEA military burner. It fits the Military Ranger cook set perfectly. The boil times are the same and it has a simmer ring/snuffer that the mil burners didn't. I didn't time it but runs a long time allowing me to make full meals.

@@jamesharvey44 Appreciate it, but I'm not sure why that 4.5oz burner would last much longer than a Trangia since they're about the same capacity? Surely somebody can make at least a 10oz-er... I'm thinking of making a much bigger one myself (closer to the burner in the Origo 5100), shouldn't be too hard to drill out an opening and fill it with carbon felt or ceramic wool.

@@andrewvickers4487 Standard Trangia is two ounces. the Mil spec burner is 4oz or so. The size difference is quite noticeable, and the Mil unit will not fit in a 25/27 set.

@@jamesharvey44 Some wires are crossed here :) 4.5 fluid ounces is 133 ml. Trangia recommend filling their burner "to max 2/3 of the burner, which is approx. 100 ml". So the entire capacity of the trangia is 150ml, which is >4.5 oz... No worries if I can't be helped :)

Nice stove nice burners , how would you extinguish the flame in order to conserve fuel after boiling water ??? Then what stops the rest of the fuel spilling out in your pack ?? Needs further research and development...
