The BEST Budget Alcohol Stove Kit I Have EVER Tested!

I love alcohol stoves, and I think they may be my favorite type of stove to test. I think what I love most is the silence! Being able to do what you need to do in silence is very satisfying. Overall I have checked out tons of stoves, but this kit may beat them all for completeness, flexibility, and cost. Thanks for watching!

I made one of these out of a Crosman pellet tin with a screw on lid, got a sheet of carbon felt at Lowe's hanging next to the solder on a rack, and a stainless steel screen strainer from Walmart for a dollar. Then made a mini one from a Nivia skin cream tin.

so technically would take $3 to make 3 PLUS another $12 for your labor, so technically you broke even, at least for the purchased one, you also get an Esbit one burner / windshield. So it's still more value to buy it for $15 bucks.

I was sick this week and spent all my downtime watching backpacking content and ordering things for a camping kit (dreaming I could get outside instead of laying on the couch in a haze hocking up loogies). I swear I watched this guy boil DOZENS of pots of water trying to decide on an alcohol burner set. This is ultimately the one I chose, because it was basically the only ethanol burner I could find online that included carbon felt in it (making it more spill-resistant I would think) and quicker+easier+cheaper to get them premade rather than doing it myself. I placed that order some 4 days ago.... Now what do I see? This video goes up! Glad I ordered it before they sold out!

I Don't know about this but I haven't seen ANY alcohol stove more better and more simpler than the DIY Fancy Feast Cat Can food stove that only requires 16 punched holes with absolutely NO Moving parts that you just light up after filling it with HEET fuel. The Trangia Burner is the only one better!

I bought these for $10 on Amazon a year ago. They work well outside, but you need a wind screen. I have 3 other alcohol stoves that I use often when I'm hiking. I did however put them in my 72-hour bag because I like the form factor combined with the Esbit stove. Overall, worth the money. Thanks for sharing.

I made a few of this type of burner & they work great except for one thing, mine are hard to light & it looks like the problem is the stainless steel mesh. I used a grease splatter screen for a fry pan purchased from a Dollar store, the mesh has a very tight weave. A great addition to my alcohol stove’s is some silicone measuring cups, 100 ml soft shot glass that can be squished into a pack & even has a nice poring notch.

The price is unbelievable. The Esbit type pot stand though isn't allowing the burners to reach their full potential. The gap between the burner and the base of the pot isn't high enough. It also has a windscreen panel that snaps into place. The tray has side walls and I thought hmmmmm... why not take my left over carbon felt and stainless mesh and make the tray into one of these stoves?? So I did. Haven't done a burn test with it yet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

I have made a pop can burner that fits inside my Esbit. 6oz can. The reason? During COVID-19 Esbit got hard to find. It also works well with a G.I. cup stove. Burner is made from a 6 oz can. No chamber, just press fit and vent holes around the top. Cat type works too, but they use a LOT of fuel.

Daisy is better. I built an alcohol stove with an old Daisy pellet can I had laying around in 2017ish. I used some welders' carbon felt instead of fiberglass to absorb the liquid, no spills, some screening from a tea leaf strainer to hold the felt in place. It holds 2 oz. or 60 ml of alcohol and with 1 oz of fuel will burn over 15 minutes. I use a Zen Camps wind screen/burner that works with alcohol or solid fuel and, though not designed that way, have used a small twig fire inside. I like things that can work with multiple options. At 76 years old, I like things that work well rather than being the lightest thing in the world. Function over form as it were. For cheaper, I used a cut tin can for wind screen and pot holder till I found the Zen Camps, which i like better.😅

Thanks Doc for your great review. I purchased this kit about a month ago. I believe the large tin is made from steel, not aluminum (magnet sticks to it). My kit came with 3 large carbon fiber(CF) disks, 2 medium and 2 small. There were no instructions, so I had no idea if one or all of the CF disks were to be used in the stove, or were they spares. What did you do?

I just have a pre warmer for my Solo Alcohol burner. It stores on the bottom you push it down, it locks in place, you put a little fuel on the pad in the middle, light it. The prewarmer was an eBay purchase. Yes not a trangia stove, but they have had decades to fix the leaky seam problem. If you want that brand, Firebox Stove will sell you one with the seam soldered. I do like this kind of fabric stove, for $15. It will be interesting if it comes back in stock. Can't go wrong with that price, 3 stoves. On my kitchen gas stove, we have a very tiny diameter burner on the back left. Our percolator coffee pot goes to a perk by about 2.5 minutes faster on it. The heat, flames, is very central to the center of the percolator's bottom. The front burners are much larger, and the flame is near the outer diameter. You have to watch for flame licking up the sides with it. I'm wondering if that small diameter burner is doing the same thing? It's very interesting that the smaller one is more efficient. Makes you want a small ones.

Have you tried burning white gas (Coleman fuel) in a spirit burner? White gas has more energy density, which is why it is often used for melting snow in Winter. But the stoves are heavy. If we could get the benefit of more energy density with a lightweight stove, then that would be excellent. - Does it work better with some kinds of burners? Wicking or cat can burners, vortex burners, or maybe one of those fancy two-chamber things you showcased recently? - Is there a way to get a nice, clean, blue flame without the soot?

Carbon felt? “Wool is classified as a flame-resistant fabric. The textile is flammable, but it has to reach at least 1,058 degrees Fahrenheit, to ignite. The material has high water and nitrogen contents in its cells which means if it did ever catch on fire, once removed from the source of the heat, it would self-extinguish the flame.”

  • @pedroclaro7822

Completely depends on how, where and what you cook. Thin pots are only good for watery stuff, otherwise you get burnt food. Either watery or oily stuff, but the second option is unhealthy. Try thin pots you have at home and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. You either only make stews, soups or use very low heat settings to allow for a more even heat distribution. Also titanium is a total gimmick. Unnecessary by all means and a lot inferior to aluminum. I’d gladly give all my titanium stuff for a good set of hard anodized aluminum cookset. Titanium is supposedly good because you can get lightweight stuff that doesn’t bend and won’t melt if put on coals as aluminum would, but as long as there’s some water in the aluminum pot it won’t ever melt.

36 minutes after you posted the video and they are sold out. The next batch likely will be double the price.

I just wish someone could do a scientific video testing the btu’s. Doesn’t it only take water, a thermometer and measurements?

Serious question: Do they leak if you leave fuel in them? Btw…video was up less than a half hour, already sold out!

No, the felt absorbs and holds the fuel (unless you fill the burner above the level of the felt of course). This type of burner therefore has the advantage of effectively being spill-proof if knocked over.

Alcohol stoves can be problematic in fire prone Northern California where I live. You start a forest fire with one and you may end up paying for the fire fighting effort.

Wow I am unimpressed with your burn time for the large since you spilled so much fuel. Or did you not realize that you poured a bunch on your counter. I guess that invalidates your burn time test at least for the large burner.
