I said the same thing! In fact I even found a picture of a Grom with a suspiciously similar paint job. The headlights weren't the best or the brightest in the old design but I miss that ridiculous asymmetrical face.

In the 1970's I used to buy the various bike mags including MCN, Superbike and so on. The latest bike was always the best and the one you bought - king of the pile six months earlier - now had problems. Its nice to see that bike mags still follow the same basic principals, namely this one is the best for the next few days until another bike comes out. In the words of Sterling Moss, the best bike is a moped which he used to chase robbers and caught them. In other words the best bike is the one you can ride to the best of your abilities. Keep up the good and profitable work bike mags..... you still have an audience.

i have a 22 s1k sport and it is an ABSOLUTE riot to ride. has the power when you require it. Does everything well. The brakes will sing you a song and make you real confident on the front end. I am going to put the stage 1 brentune on it. the autoblip is a shade clunky and the start idle is a tad annoying. Best piece about the bike is that when you want a nice lazy ride, it is 100% happy doing it. but when you want to go full nut bag, it turns into a flat daemon. I was going to go for the M package but realized i can do a full akra system for 1/2 the price and the wheels really didn't matter that much to me. Good luck, hope this helps someone. I will have it on the track in 3 weeks and i can't wait.

After I sold my 2014 MT-09 (FZ-09 down here), I yearned to carve those hidden gems of twisties found here in Southeast Texas( people think we don’t have twisties, luckily I live inbetween those nice country roads and the city). Anyways, that’s when I started looking for bike reviews, as I was looking for a replacement to my MT-09. MCN’s written articles was always part of my benchmark of a motorcycle I’d find on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Then I discovered they have videos! And boy was I missing out on Mr. Neeves. Super insightful reviews and quality camerawork by the MCN crew makes me feel like you guys just aren’t a group a chumps riding these bikes to work and having to review them( looking at some U.S. motojournalists) Neeves is the benchmark of what a good motojournalist should be, and I’m sure that those qualities will trickle down to other reviewers at MCN, so I expect to always keep up with moto-media outlet. Appreciate y’all!

It’s probably more down to what you want. For me this is the perfect super naked. Road, touring, the occasional pillion use and all the power I’d ever need. Not the most exciting, but a great all rounder, the sort of bike that isn’t instantly impressive but does everything well. Great TFT, heated grips and cruise control and all day usable. Probably not the right bike if you’re looking for something completely mad.

Coming from you sir, with the background, and hands on levers you have... i learn from your feedback ahead of time... I ordered the Sport with DDC a few months ago; should be arriving soon. I was looking for a linear 4cy, w/ the latest technology, light for weekend rides, short trips to tour America, and aspiring enough for the occasional track sessions... I'm 5'7 weight 160lbs and opted for the low seat option on my build, carbon package, sport package, and the hand warmers... me+bike super light hahahahaha.... add some touring luggage and let's gooou #MakeLifeaRide !

These modern bikes are a work of technological art, superb motors, over the top electronics, but i think the manufacturers need to address the visual look and style , they all resemble one another. Years back you could distinguish between the brands at a glance ,now they all look the same especially the nakeds. When we shell out our hard earned cash we want that extra special icing on the cake look, which i personally think we don't get nowadays.

What BMW does best over every other naked bike nowadays is the handlebars, they are almost flat, both looking great and especially and foremost feel great. The riding position is one of the best in its class, the riding position is somewhat "semi-aggressive" making for an excellent sporty ride, while still very comfortable. I had no problem riding this bike for a whole day on a mini-tour, I felt more sporty than on all the other hyper-nakeds and being 6'7 tall , I was leaning more in to the wind, making it easier on the body. On my MT-10 for example, I sit straight up like a sail and after a couple of hours I am fatigued from all the wind-blast. Not as much on the S1000R, and the M1000R is even more sporty, perhaps a bit much for the street, I have to test it more to be sure. It also both feels and looks weird sitting straight up on a sportbike, on an adventure bike it fits, but at least how I ride a sport-bike on the streets, I think BMW nailed it! I had a hard time finding any base model in the stores for 13 000£ as they now cost 2024 in Sweden at least. Most stores had at 2 or more extra packages on their bikes so they were much more expensive. It is not fair, like some do, to say that this bike is the cheapest hypernaked and compare it to the rest because several of the other hypernakeds come with quickshifter and cruise control on the base model. If you want any features on your S1000R at all which would make it comparable "techwise" to the other hypernakeds, prepare to pay around 15 000£ , since cruise control and quickshifter is not even in the same "extra package" they are in two sep packages you have to buy extra, at least in Sweden 2024.

Agreed the shift-cam is a missed hero sell point. Could still have shift-cam with different cam grinds, even more mid-range and a top-end rush! Wish these sports naked bikes had better pannier luggage options making them the perfect do-it-all road sports bikes!

I wouldn’t say that’s what counts. I can ride almost anything the same speed on the road because there is a limit to how hard you can safely and responsively ride. So how it sounds and makes you feel, it’s character is important. So I’d go for almost anything over the BMW most likely the tuono. For context my current bikes are a Royal Enfield interceptor 650 and a Ducati Monster S4RS

Great Review as always Michael, I have owned a 2016 Gen 1 S1000R Sport and also a 2020 Gen 2 S1000R Sport. Keep thinking the latest Model is the Natural Progression for me, I am not a fan of Aprilia's or KTM's although I quite like the look of the new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 though. I only ever ride on the Road and never do Trackdays and have never been disappointed with the Straight Line Performance of the older S1000R's and if I wanted something with more Power I would buy probably buy a Litre Superbike although I actually had a 2016 ZX10R KRT Edition and then the Year after went to an S1000R Sport and didn't find it lacking.

If you like to do track days, get the double r version. I can’t imagine enjoying track days on a naked bike anyway with no fairings. 150 miles per hour with no wind protection doesn’t sound like much fun. Good review. I actually preferred it to the Tuono and Speed Triple (Aprilia gearbox wasn't great, and Triumph chassis isn't as good). I scored it on a par with the KTM as a road bike. But I already have a twin, so this compliments my other bike better. Planning on ordering one before next Spring...!

If you didn't think the Aprilia gearbox was well, you were shifting too early (my guess). It needs revs and load and then you can't even feel the shifts. Go back and try shifting over 7k rpm while accelerating. S1000r is a great bike and no one is going to be disappointed in it, but the feeling in the seat of the Tuono is just more visceral.

@@snaphook31 yeah it was better under load and lots of revs, but you can't ride like that all the time (at least not in the UK). The BMW shifter on the other hand is best in the business. But I'm glad there's so many different bike options. Lots of choice for all us bikers, and no bad bike amoung them!

I recently rode the 2021 BMW S1000R , 2021 Triumph Speed Triple 1200RS and 2021 Aprilia Tuono V4. The BMW is incredibly light, the one I rode had the forged wheels so it steered amazingly fast. The engine has not the performance of the Triumph nor the Aprilia but that is not an issue since it is plenty fast. The main complains for me were front end instability at high speeds and the vibrations through the bar. I could live with that. But I could never live with the soulless engine. I have never ridden an electric bike but i guess the S1000R is quite close to the sensations of an electric motorcycle. It is so bland. If you buy an 2021 S1000R you should never ride a Speed triple 1200RS or Tuono V4 because you will immediately realize you made the wrong choice.

@Casey R. I don't like the front end of the S1000R either. And overall it looks cheaper than the Triumph or the Aprilia. Between the Triumph and the Aprilia the 1200RS makes the 2021 Tuono V4 feel a generation old. Which it is. I own a 2013 Tuono V4R and a 2011 Speed Triple 1050. The 2021 Tuono is a refined version of my Tuono but fundamentally is the same motorcycle. The 1200RS is a completely new bike and makes my 1050 feel like a dinosaur. The 1200RS is the best bike I have ever ridden and I will buy one in the near future. I also can't understand the complains of some journalists about the confort of the 1200RS. Is a sportsbike, is firm but not uncomfortable. It is much better than the Tuono in that regard. I think you bought wisely

  • @brunocarmona4958

@Casey R. My main dislike about the 1200RS is the TFT being too small and slow. I also think it would be a more enjoyable motorcycle if it had a less powerful engine. Don't get me wrong I love the new 1160 triple but I know I would rarely have the opportunity to explore it on the street. Even my Tuono would be better with less power IMO. It is one thing I like about the 1050, the engine feels right for a road bike. My third bike is a 2015 Street Triple 675 Rx. Besides being almost a bicycle regarding size and weight I just love how I can wring its engine in the twisties

Chirag Parikh . It's really hard to choose a number one as they are all amazing bikes . As a road only bike I would say the KTM as it has effortless speed ,good mpg and a comfortable riding position . The Tuono is amazing but is let down by poor warranty service in the u.k . I haven't ridden the Triumph yet but the electronics which constantly reset would put me off buying it . I think the Ducati could win it if it wasn't so thirsty as it's silly fast . However 20 k is too much for a naked bike.
