    I found these yesterday on an Ash tree stump and wasn't sure what it was. I researched it and decided it was probably edible so I sauteed some of it and tried it. I didn't really know how to cook it but it came out pretty good and I didn't get sick or die :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for more of these!

    Thanks Rob, We get two flushes in a year, first one comes around the first of June here in Northern WI, the second around the first of August. The first one only seems to last a few weeks, the second goes longer into the fall. Chris

    The Jack O Lantern is a clustered, stemmed mushroom and grow in clusters on the ground. I've never seen them growing on a tree. I"ve also never seen bugs or worms in Chicken mushrooms. Ever try canning them? I'm going to try canning them this year as I have several spots that produce good amounts yearly.

    We do see worms in them from time to time, look for little holes on the side that you cut off the tree. You can even see them sometimes. Chris

    Chris & Kathy Interesting. But I've never seen any worms in COW shrooms. I see them all the time in Dryad saddles though.

    They also grow on black oak. Chicken of the woods has pores and the Jack O'lantern has gills.

    I found this mushroom once when I got lost in the woods. I thought it was a jackolantern mushroom because I was inexperienced. I only took a few, and I lost the few I took.

    I used a knife like that to cut some chaga, almost cut my fingertip off. I personally only use locking knives now.

    @@chriskathy9865 i love mushrooms too but afraid to eat them boletes seem to be the easiest to identify am i wrong? I found a mushroom that was groing on a tree but it wasnt orange it was white

    Some boletes are easy to ID, there are a lot that are not so easy. Maybe your white ones were oysters. There are a lot of groups on facebook that are pretty good on IDing mushrooms, including our FB group facebook.com/groups/270485909965678/

    Well being that your weather is affected more by Lake Superior and it stays a little warmer there, you may still be able to find some. Maybe some Hen of the Woods or some late fall Oysters wouldn't be out of the question. Chris

    I guess we find ours early enough before the bugs get to them, We do find our share of bug filled mushrooms, but we leave them behind, thanks for wacthing, Chris

    Is it okay to eat the part that is closely attached to the tree?

    You can but it is generally not very palatable, the texture is quite dry and chalky, especially in the larger specimens. Also it's where you tend to find the insects that also like to eat them. Check for small holes that means the little white grubs have been feasting there.

    I often find very large white mushrooms growing in my yard, likely above the roots of our large silver maple. Not sure if they are safe to eat. How "poisonous" can mushrooms actually be? The safety of mushrooms would make for great food videos.

    Chris my wife and I harvested our first chicken of the woods today and batter fried them. We both love them but have to really limit our fried foods have you ever pickled these ? Or do you have any other non fried tips ? Also do they freeze well ?

    W have dehydrated them with great success & we have also sauted them & then froze them, saute in butter, let them cool off & freeze them, they turn out great. Never pickled them, don't think that would turn out so good, Thanks for watching & the question. Chris

    Chris & Kathy Thanks for the tips. There were just too many to eat at one time and we were looking for a way to preserve them. We always try just a small amount at first to make sure there are no reactions so my wife sauteed a few in butter. She thinks they taste a lot like bacon that way.

    hi i really enjoyed this video and i have a question, i have read the rules and regulations of mushroom hunting in wisconsin and they state that you are not allowed to sell the mushrooms do you have some kind of permit that lets you sell them?

    I really don't know where you seen that. As far as I know it is legal to sell, there are many people doing it.

    Not right away, we have had some logs that produced 4 years straight, others every other year, some not at all after we found it on one. Chris

    @@chriskathy9865 , I am in Southern New England; having found one large, fresh cluster last fall, and several other degraded clusters elsewhere after the first frost, should the dormant or freeze-killed clusters be cut off at the base of the tree so that they'll (hopefully) grow back fresh next year? What about fresh clusters: when harvesting them, should you leave some behind or should you take it all, and how much should you leave attached to the tree or stump?

    @@goodun2974 The mycilium is already in the host tree, wouldn't matter if you leave any or not. I harvest what I need at the time, if that's all of it, then I take it all, the stuff you find dead, it wouldn't matter if you cut it off or not. Chris

    I would check with farmer markets in your area, or perhaps there is a mushroom hunting club in your area. There might be a place online that sells it, but I'm sure with shipping you'd be paying way to much. Thanks for watching & the question. Chris

    Hey buddy, you should never tear the mushrooms off the tree or you may tear off the mycellium with it, and damage it for next year, and not have a harvest next year. Not trying to tell you what to do or be bossy, but just trying to be helpful! thanks!

    Jedi Vague, i agree just watch video to make sure i was right on some i foynd today for thanksgiving dinner and made sure i only took 50% unless its a stand alone and i am more timid on those still. For these and puffballs today!

    DM, I agree with you he was taking them to sell at the market which I think is wrong. One third for you, one third for nature, one third to regrow.

    Who said money doesn't grow on trees? Looks like you found plenty of money there. I know many people in my city who would buy them for more than what you are charging at farmers markets. If you have a bunch to sell me at $12 a pound and are within an hour of Ottawa Canada I will buy all of your COTW.

    Yep, money does grow on trees, But even selling our mushrooms cheap as we do, we still bring some home with us. Not always a bad thing, but can only eat so much or dehydrate so much. Need a bigger market to sell at I guess, Chris

    Well we do it for a living, anyone can go out and look for them themselves but they'd rather buy them from us, we've never had a complaint by them, we also take people out to look for mushrooms when they ask. There are others that do what we do in the same area & get more for them. Chris
