That is an easy critique to make, but it is missing the point. Your heritage is where you start- who your family were. Where *you take yourself* is what defines *you.* The author has to establish who the family were in order to provide the audience context for where the character(s) end up. *Fictional biases must be established and defined before they can be deconstructed in a meaningful way.* The alternative is a "tell don't show" approach in which the author describes how "and then everyone except the good guys totally oppressed them" until they eventually stop explicitly describing the abuse, at which point the arc would be over. Failing to establish how bad the bigotry is in the first place will rob the trope of "Plucky, young character realizes that the sins of the father do not define them" of it's impact. We need to see consequences for a resolution to carry any weight.

Fun fact: that was basically a message in Return of the Jedi. Luke bares some potential visual foreshadowing of turning to the dark side. He’s aware of the choices his father made and with that he makes the right choice and resists killing Vader and the Emperor in anger. We didn’t need a sequel trilogy to completely undo everything Luke his friends and comrades accomplished including their personal growth just to retroactively declare him a placeholder for someone younger and more attractive and to some people’s temporary delight address a trope that was never a trope to begin with. Fun fact: Rey’s lineage for the duration of the last Jedi was a mystery box. Ben had motive to lie and with that we don’t see her parents likenesses nor their surname

In the books, Ginny is the queen of inconsistent characterisation. In the beginning of the series, she's written like an even younger child, in books 2-4, she's quiet and sensitive about violence, but capable of being underhand and amoral (covering up her involvement in Chamber of Secrets, only caring if she gets in trouble), in books 5-7, she's thoroughly obnoxious and aggressive, fixated on mucus and inexplicably great at Quidditch in the way of a Mary Sue. I might imagine that "Timmy is Voldemort's illegitimate child" is the wizarding world's equivalent of "UR GAY" or "Timmy has cooties!" Anywho, when I read this years ago, my main impressions were that this read like a Harry Potter fanfic---and that even so, Albus and Scorpius were adorable together. One of the main problems, I think (which has been pointed out by others before me) is that most of the Harry Potter books are actually *mysteries* at their core, and the time-turner turns Harry Potter into a *science fiction* story. The genre shift leaves people feeling like they aren't really reading a Harry Potter story. (Plus, as you noted, the writing is often bad and people act out-of-character.) Also, re: Rose, if the genders were reversed, we'd correctly perceive how Rose treats Scorpius as abusive, mean, haughty, neggy, and all-around overflowing with red flags. The prize is not worth the game here. Also, also, what is wrong with cishets where they're presumably more okay with joking about incest and statutory rape than depicting a healthy queer romance?

You know, for a writer who likes to crow about her gay characters, Rowling sure does seem to hate writing gay characters. And for a writer who seems to fancy herself a feminist - and I stop at saying she fancies herself one due to how awful she is to trans people and how she dresses up her bald-faced bigotry as protecting women - she tends to write women in really sexist ways. I don't even like Harry Potter, and even I can tell that to make it so Hermione needed a man in her life to become the Minister of Magic is such a misogynistic pile of garbage writing that it borders on parody. Her characterization from the start was of an intelligent, ambitious young woman with a strong sense of justice that got her into trouble but never ceased being something she valued. To make it so she needs to be hitched to Ron Weasley, the crown prince of ass clowns, in order to accomplish anything is the entire opposite of how to translate feminist theory into practice as an author. So the only conclusion I can draw is that Rowling is a feckless opportunist that will hitch her wagon to literally any ideology that will give her clout even when she contradicts herself to do so. Sorry for writing a thesis on this. Rowling just makes my stomach turn.

I personally think that making this a play was more of a negative then a positive. It's always hard to continue a story that is "finished" in this case Harry Potter, but then to go and put it into another media all together is even harder to do. Next... get rid of the Harry Potter part of the title. His story is finished and if they really want to make a new story a new name is needed or at least that's how I see it. Third...I might get some flak for this but, get rid of these awful retcons it turns this mess of a story into an even worse one... I'll even be honest I didn't know that was Hermione until you told me it was. That's just some of my thoughts though and I am not a writer AT ALL.

I wouldn’t mind the story being about Albus and Scorpius, but have it focus on them trying to solve a mystery at Hogwarts. It’s when they started doing the time travel, and Delphi and literally everything else they did that screwed things. And with all the death eaters either dead or back in Azkaban, I’d like to think the slytherins mellowed out in the 19 years between the ending and the epilogue. Main problem of the play is that it wasn’t written by Rowling. I mean compare philosopher’s stone to cursed child and fantastic beasts. Fantastic Beasts, even as a script felt more in line than curse child.

How about instead of blood racism its the story about a new dark wizard rising to power on the principle of power undaunted. They mix in muggle tech and break tradition to get a new edge and take over the darker elements of wizard society. They are not racist but still hold the idea of weak vs the strong. Their followers frequently fight each other in death games to increase their skills, such that each living individual of this new movement is a huge problem to deal with. And triple down by making the dark lord a Hufflepuff, an inclusive forgotten evil that breaks the stupid tradition of only Slytherin being evil.

I personally believe that the whole scorpious-albus platonic-but-with-romantic-interactions-relationship mess can be blamed on bad writing, the authors of the show failed to write a good strictly platonic relationship and this led to some moments that felt out of place for what the relationship was supposed to be, this can be seen because they also failed on writing a good canonical romance. They made an apple pie that tasted like a cherry pie and a burned cherry pie I believe that this could have been changed if either A. Just made Scorpius and Albus a real thing or B. This is a long one so be prepared, according to literally no one I am the grandmaster of how to write healthy and cute love stories so trust me on this one. We begin with Rose and Albus being forced to sit with Scorpious, both of them unsure of what to say and kind of scared to be quite honest ( I mean, the kid IS related to Bellatrix after all...) tension arises but is soon put down when they quickly find out that the boy is actually a very sweet dork. Albus and Scorpius become friends while Rose and Scorpious quickly show an interest in one another. Scorpious is especially obvious about it. By the fourth year of Hogwarts, it is revealed that Scorpious was kissed by Rose and that they are now dating. Through the show, we see that despite how awkward Scorpious is, whenever he is around Rose he becomes a lot more confident, as Rose gave him both the faith and support that he had never received before in his life. Rose, on the other hand, becomes far more calm and relaxed around Scorpious, as he makes her feel not only as if she is truly special, and reminds her that she truly matters to him, with all her faults, which is something she really needs, as she tends to feel like she has to be perfect in order to live up to her mother and father. They keep their relationship a secret from their families, as Rose's grandfather insisted that he would rather die than see a member of his family married to a Malfoy, but regardless of what they say Romeo and Juliet still seem to be made for one another. In the time-traveling affair, Scorpious tries to stop Albus, as Rose had convinced him that it was all a horrible idea, and Albus almost listens to him... However Delphi then tells Scorpious that maybe if they travel time, he would be able to stop his father from becoming a death eater and make him less of a bigot, thus making the relationship between his father and Rose's family a lot less awkward... to say the least... this finally making Scorpious agree, since he longed to be liked by his girlfriends family, and be able to make their relationship public more than anything in the world. When he comes back he realizes that Rose was never born in that timeline his world is completely shattered, and his relationship with Albus suffers because of it. Desperate to go back and fix the error he made, he ends up accepting all the terms and conditions of Delphi, so long as she lets him get his hands on the time turner, however, before he even has the chance to fix his mistake. he steps into the reality in which Voldemort wins. Same old stuff as the first one, with two minor differences: 1. before the dementors kiss Ron and Hermionie. they tell him that they are grateful for having a boy like him be the boyfriend of their daughter 2. instead of being Albus that triggers his Patronus, it was actually the memory of the first time that he saw Rose or kiss her or of something to do with her, NOT Albus. When he finally returns to his timeline, instead of being all happy and hugging Albus, he immediately pushes him aside and goes and hugs Rose begging her to forgive him, even if she has no idea of what happened. When Albus and Scorpius are getting scolded for their actions, with Hermione being especially harsh on Scorpious, Rose goes and defends them, since even though Rose thought that even if his actions were stupid, she sympathized with him as she herself wishes that their relationship was less of a forbidden thing. She is still very mad at him for not having listened to her, though. After a while, the two do reconcile and continue with their relationship, but they both promise to never do a decision so radical without consulting the other first. The same old stuff that happens in the play happens after this, but by the end of the play, in their final year, a very old Arthur and Molly come in and give Scorpious their blessing, though they still do it a bit reluctantly... regardless Scorpious is immensely grateful and soon proposes to Rose. I know that this is probably not great, but still gives Scorpious a reason to like Rose other than just because the play needed a romantic subplot and, it makes the relationship between Albus and Scorpius seem strictly platonic, since in this version he 1. does not follow him blindly, and instead calls him out on multiple occasions, 2. is not willing to do every single thing he asks him to do and 3. is FAR more concern about what happens to his actual love interest than on Albus getting his way. In other words, he is a simp for Rose, not Albus... But seriously though in this version he still cares deeply about Albus and his well-being, which is why he insists on not taking Delphi with them, not because he is jealous, but because he does not trust Delphi, and sees her as an awful influence on Albus

It’s really really really coded as albus and Scorpius being gay-my mum said the entire second part was about how they are gay. Snape makes a reference about love when talking to Scorpius about albus. Albus tells Harry Scorpius is going to be the most important person in his life for the rest of his life. They were undeniably gay. The cast plays it that way and I don’t know if JK is even aware!

JK Rowling has always enjoyed writing parallels between characters after all.And at the end when Delphini was freaking out because of her failure to save her father, you could tell Harry felt very sorry for her as a fellow orphan. He knew exactly why she tried so hard to use a time turner to try and meet the parents she never knew. It's pretty much a parallel of when 11 yr old Harry kept looking into the mirror of Erised night after night,to longingly gaze on the parents he didn't remember. At that point Dumbledore reprimanded Harry for obsessing over an impossible dream, while forgetting to live.Harry pretty much did the same when he told Delphini that he understood her dream, but that she couldn't mess with time to bring her parents back. Instead of the battle ending the way it did, imagine if Delphini Vs Harry dialogue mirrored a certain scene from Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry: (Stands coldly over Sirius black with wand raised) Sirius: "Are you going to kill me Harry?" Harry: "You killed my parents......" Sirius: "“I don’t deny it,But if you knew the whole story.” What if Harry found himself in the same position as Sirius, and Delphini was in young Harrys shoes? It actually fits quite well. All Kid Harry knew is rumors and an incomplete version of a story where Sirius had been responsible for his parents deaths. Delphini's basically spent her youth being groomed and brainwashed by the remnants of her fathers cult to accept a certain version of the story where Harry is her parents murderer. Delphini is basically a shadow of what Harry would have been if he had been forced to live until adulthood with the Dursleys, never went to Hogwarts and made friends etc. To me it was a perfect opportunity to have Harry (at least eventually) end up being Delphini's mentor/honorary God father.

    - Retcon the love potion thing because it was fucking stupid. - Scorpius can keep chasing Rose and maybe get in a relationship with her, but Albus has to be against it. Being a Slytherin, Albus is mostly against it out of jealousy, but also sees how toxic the relationship is and wouldn't support it anyways. Scorpius, however, is a social outcast due to the Voldemort rumor (which should be retconned to just be about his dad being a Death Eater like you said), so due to lack of practice/experience, he probably doesn't really know what a healthy relationship looks like or what the red flags are for a toxic relationship, so he would pursue it anyways. At the same time, Ron and Hermione's relationship is shown to be extremely toxic (since they really only got into it out of jealousy, and they don't actually have all that much in common). Hermione becomes abusive to Ron, and this relationship dynamic is then mirrored through Rose and Scorpius's relationship. Eventually Hermione can't stand the relationship anymore and divorces Ron. The divorce puts a lot of stress on Rose, whose perfect life is now starting to fall apart. The stress makes it too hard for her to keep up her relationship with Scorpius and she breaks up with him. She never really cared for him to begin with, so she makes it short and abrupt before storming off to deal with her stress. Both Ron and now Scorpius are devastated, and Albus comes in to comfort Scorpius as Harry tries to comfort Ron. However, Albus is mostly doing it to try and be the fallback boyfriend (our main characters are Slytherins, we should take full advantage of the fact that they're probably both manipulative pieces of shit), and when Scorpius realizes this, he's incredibly hurt by the abuse of his trust and their friendship shatters. It then becomes a B plot that Albus is now having to slowly rebuild his Slytherin crush's trust just so they can at least be friends again. Meanwhile, Rose is dealing with the stress from the divorce very poorly, bullying everyone around her and in general being a bitch. People get sick of her and she starts losing friends. This further stresses her out, since the fame of her parents which she's been riding on this whole time to get her unearned popularity is now failing her and she doesn't know how to deal with that. Everyone's pretty much sick of her by this point, but Harry tries to get Albus to at least be understanding of Rose's situation. Over time Albus and eventually Scorpius try to comfort her, she tries to be tough and brush them off but eventually has an emotional breakdown with them which they help her through, and towards the end of the series she becomes the fourth member of their band of misfits (though she won't be a major participant in any of the actual adventures, and Scorpius will have learned his lesson and won't be going after her by this point), and the new friend group helps her to be less of a bitch. - The wizarding community largely rejects new modern technology (with some exceptions), so Hogwarts won't be upgrading most of their equipment (with the exception of a few rebellious new teachers who make their own upgrades to their classrooms). Instead, muggleborn students will smuggle contraband tech into the school (students will probably call them "Smuggles" or something). This leads to an arms race between them and the teachers; the teachers will use their magic to search for contraband tech, and the Smuggles in turn will start learning new spells on their own time to better-hide their stuff (maybe a rough allegory for the pointlessness of the war on drugs or something). This leads to the muggleborn students far surpassing the skills of the pureblood students, which will piss off the pureblood students and start some form of rivalry between them and maybe an anti-mudblood movement or something. - Meanwhile, wizarding community leaders are having to implement more and more elaborate spells in order to hide their communities from the muggle world and its ever-advancing tech, which is costing more and more resources and becoming less and less feasible, especially with occasional leaks from Smuggles using their smuggled-in phones/computers to post videos/images of magic and mythical creatures online. They're starting to seriously consider revealing themselves to the muggle world, and how best to do so (kind of a Wakanda-like situation). And the main characters' adventures will probably cause events that will make this more and more difficult.

In fact, you can easily say that evil timeline Delphine came in, kidnapped normal timeline Delphine, and took her place if you want good Delphine back. Kind of a cop out, but yk- If I were to do a Harry Potter play, I’d make it a Sherlock Holmes mystery about a wizard serial killer or wizard mob war or something else with a noir feel. mysteries have always been the core of Harry Potter, so bringing it into an adult way would be natural, especially when Harry’s an auror. Plus, mysteries are an easy and fun way to keep an audience engaged, which is what you want for a play

The real problem with it is that Rowling was lazy: She wrote only one major female character in a mostly male cast and then paired her with someone who wasn't the lead. That's always a recipe for fandom backlash. If she'd introduced Luna sooner and made Ginny more prominent after Book 2 instead of waiting till Book 6 to do anything with them this might have been averted.

time travel is just too messy to make a coherent or consistent plot. Never really liked the time turner as a plot device anyway because it always just seemed like when something consequential happened (like a death), the question becomes “why not use the time turner?” Reminds me of life is strange in a way. Being able to always rewind time made decision making feel cheap because actions no longer have a direct relationship with consequence.

These are all supposed to be big plot points and reveals for character motivations but it doesn't feel like it. Overall the tone is on point. I wish Rose was less 2D she's Hermione's daughter and yet somehow that doesn't seem to be a shadow to be under for this character in the slightest. So, I just saw this yesterday. Funny thing, they changed the Scorpius asking Rose out bit. Instead of him asking her out, he asked her to be his friend. Whole "pity leads to eventual marriage" thing was also changed to friendship. The Polly conversation was also cut, Rose came back after this, and they continued on as normal. I can't remember if she called him Scorpion King, I don't think she did. I haven't read the script since it first came out, so I was shocked by the original dialog. I'm just going to ignore the original version. Scorpius didn't ask Rose out, instead they become eventual friends and she's stuck being a third wheel as Scorpius and Albus fall in love with each other.

I take the parts I like (Albus being Slytherin, Delphini existing, Rose x Scorpius, etc.) while omitting stuff I don't like (Delphini being obsessed with Voldemort, the whole uncomfortable love triangle between Delphi and Albus/Scorpius, Rose being strait-up mean), and replacing them with more entertaining head-canons.

I accept the 7 original books and a little bit of outside material here and there, like the book and quill that records the magical children who get to go to Hogwarts, I liked that idea, just whatever seems actually thought through and enhances the world instead of making it worse, but I just pretend the rest of it doesn't exist. It's fiction, and originally great or at least solid and fun franchises get ruined more and more by endlessly putting out sequels and spin offs and remakes that don't make sense or are just lower in quality, so that's what I do to keep myself sane and still enjoy the things I've come to love.

I think one big ball they dropped is not following through in Delphini and Harry having a relationship like Harry had with Sirius and Dumbledore. The parallels are pretty uncanny.Delphini in a fashion is Harry if he had to live with the durselys until adulthood, and never went to Hogwarts and made friends etc. Instead of the lame 'Haha I'm a psychopath like my parents' revelation, they should have just made Delphini a product of her sad upbringing. Raised by someone even more physically/emotionally abusive then the Durselys. Brainwashed by the remnants of her fathers death eater cult to want to avenge Voldemort and Bellatrix by murdering Harry. They should have just wrote her as someone decent at heart but deeply traumatized. Her fervent desire to kill Harry reminds me strongly of when Harry himself once wanted to kill Sirius Black, because he had a skewed version of the story the night his parents died. Basically the same thing here. Delphini has been brainwashed to think that her parents were great people. And that Harry is the evil person that took them away, and prevented her from having a good childhood. They should have paralleled the scene in Prisoner of Azkaban where Harry has Sirius at his mercy, but hesitates and fails to kill him. Only this time Delphini somehow gets the upper hand in the battle against Harry, and yet in the end can't bring her self to cast the killing curse. In the end Delphini could slowly be reformed and deprogrammed. And realize that her parents were evil, while Harry was doing what needed to be done

I personally like the idea maybe she’s the daughter of a death eater either that died during the battle of hogwarts, or was arrested or killed during Harry’s early days as a auror. But timing wise, the only time Bellatrix could’ve been pregnant was during half blood prince, and even then that was only cause HBC was pregnant during filming. Idk, Voldemort is one of those people I couldn’t see having a kid, let alone actually doing it with someone. Who knows, maybe him and Bellatrix did some SRA.
