Yea, probably a lot of people watching this won't realise just how amazing that is, as from what I learned during my short-lived hawking-years, Harris Hawks have a natural dislike of canines. It is a job well done for sure, and to echo Freebirds' sentiments, happy hawking & merry Christmas from Scotland... Paz.

Really can’t say alway decided that after weighing and depending how much flying he has done, plus the weather temperature plays a very big role. Food amounts can double in freezing weather to a mild day. Thanks for watching, great question but difficult to answer. If you are in England let me know and I will explain more if you wish.

One thing that you do that no other Falconer does, is you aren't afraid to go past a hawk's hunting weight! And this is the coolest thing you've said yet, "I keep my Harris hawk as heavy as I can". I definitely believe that Woody should be as heavy as he can, especially since he is hunting with you every day and you are trying to give him more muscle than fat! He should use every bit of that muscle to pounce down on the prey he catches! He seemed to do just fine at 0.5 oz over his hunting weight, even though he is more stubborn as you've explained in the past! He still follows along very nicely! He really should be following you at any weight, but he won't if you let the weight get too high! The beginning was good where Woody was eating a tasty rabbit with Chewy alongside him! You did miss the catch, but its the meal that matters the most to Woody! I wonder what happened at 8:55 where Woody got his talons stuck on the brush? I'm guessing that he was trying to catch a mouse, but it must have slipped away and when he tried to grab it, he got stuck! At 10:45, Woody actually did catch a mouse! Excellent feather find at the 10:10 mark. Maybe a Guinea Fowl got eaten by a Sparrowhawk. That could explain why all those feathers were condensed in one spot.

As you know I fly daily I’m sure this is why woody can fly at most weight and still return, that said , he isn’t at fat weight, but certainly a heavy male hunting. When woodys talons were stuck ,he had attempted to catch a vole or mouse, that natural grasping action is sometimes difficult to release, the ratchet system seems to have a mind of it own during an attack. You could be correct about the feathers and a sparrow hawk, I did think the same , but also was wondering if a fox may of eaten it, a sparrow hawk seems the likely predator.

Perhaps the reason why Woody's talons has a mind of its own when he is in "attack mode" is probably due to the fact that his feet is lower on its body. Therefore he isn't getting as much nerve response. Also, he probably hasn't had many situations where he had *almost* caught his prey! I do want to wish you a Merry Christmas! And I'm hoping Woody has a great Christmas as well because he is the most amazing Harris Hawk I've seen yet!

Hi. This has to be one of the most amazing videos i have ever watched. The teamwork between your hawk and dog (is it woody and buzz ??) Is phenomenal, also the hawk just following you and then returning whenever you call is amazing. I salute you sir. Ive had a barn owl for about 5 years now, id love a hawk but work is busy so i wont get one unless i have the time to stimulate his brain. My owl is fine, fly him now and then and as long as he is fed he is happy but i know a hawk needs to hunt. Amazing vid. Maybe when i semi retire ill get one but for the birds sake, not until.

@@freebirdofreason1994 He/she is a barn owl mate. I got it from a breeder in Doncaster, im from Middlesbrough so i had to do a bit of research and then travelling he is ringed and registered to me. Ive had a bit of an identity crisis tho, i named him Barney, then about 2 years ago he laid eggs lmao. None hatched of course but im almost sure now he is a she. Thanks for your reply mate.
