Wow a 1 hour+ video! nice. 😇 Erratic tape counter is very common in '80s decks. If the counter is the mechanical type, it would have small plastic gears ... with age, they can break or slip on their shafts causing erratic rotation.

After playing it for over 24 hours, the counter is working perfectly now. Maybe some dust or foreign particles in the gears.

@@norcal715 Glad you found that and sorted it and luckily no broken or cracked gears. Dirt and/or a bit of sticky grease is also a problem in counter assemblies as it can jam the reset button causing the counter to stop rotating. That only leaves the faulty level meters but a great job all-round. Your customer should now be able to play some of his old tapes on it. 👍

I recently picked up a TC-292 from the bay. Transport functions work fine, heads look new, peak meters work, audio output works but I am not thrilled with the sound quality when listening to commercial tapes. I will open it up and have a look at the caps and belts, and do a clean and lube. I do have 4 reel to reel decks so maybe I am just expecting too much from a cassette deck... Norcal do you ever attempt any performance testing with scope or other test instruments? I have recently been experimenting with NAK-T100 software and it seems to work well for testing frequency response, wow and flutter, and levels. Have not attempted head alignment testing. I will need calibration tapes to do full testing. p.s. your video work is excellent!
