Harley Twin Cam Chain Tensioner Replacement with Push Rod Removal Complete - Part 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part 2 in this series continues with the installation of the secondary tensioner using the tool specifically for this task. On this bike the oil pump was removed for inspection so a special task was done to re-align the pump, this is not normally part of the procedure but necessary for a pump repair or swap.
The cam alignment should be conducted before the cam carrier unit is reinstalled into the bike. The dashes should face each other as shown in the video.
A further centering procedure is required for the oil pump, only if the pump was removed from the unit.
On reassembly lifters should be returned to the same direction they were removed from.
The breather on this bike was epoxied together at the factory and not designed to be split, this may be the same for earlier bikes.

What kind of crazy video is this? No Music , No jabbering, No Stuttering, No Umms, Errrs, Uhhs? Clear concise, to the point, NO BULLSHIT, and possibly the most understandable mechanical disassembly/assembly video I've ever seen... Subbed, Rang the Bell, and looking forward to anything else you care to share... BRAVO!

It can be done, but it is a little easier, and less expensive if you do it more than once, to have adjustable push rods. He did remove the rocker boxes. What I didn't see him do was replace bearings or clean out screen sock.

What an excellent presentation -- I feel like I now have a thorough understanding of camchain tensioner removal and replacement. I have a 2003 Dyna Low Rider and at 32,000 miles my inner shoe was completely worn out and broken. I caught it in time and based on your Part 1 and Part 2 videos I have completed tensioner replacements. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Excellent content. What's not to like? Subscribed. A TC88 is for life, take the rough with the smooth. Had a 1340 fxdl for around 10 years, wasn't going to go with the TC but got a '99 FXDL as a full restore project. Best video I've seen but I would lock the inner tensioner from the outside to aid cam install, lower back down gently.

Great Video!! Although I am still afraid, I will get everything apart okay, But, when it comes to putting everything back together, Oh boy!! My Shovelhead I had back in the mid 80's was the last time I attempted to work on my Harley. I also had a great friend that rode and worked on Harleys forever. He had a garage at his house and every tool imaginable. A great friend that helped me anytime I needed it. Then in 2000 I bought an 883 Sportster that was brand new and only needed maintenance which Harley would do, because I moved away from my buddy. A few years later after selling the too small 883, I bought a low rider which Harley Dealership also did the work on, this was back in 2004. Since then, I haven't ridden until last month when I went and bought a 2001 Dyna. I have hardly any tools and no friends that can help me, also no money since I became disabled and can't make the money I used to make!! So, I HAVE to learn to do this myself or sell the bike I just bought. Which selling it is out of the question since I'm way older and disabled, if I sold it I'd probably never ride again!! So, this video really helped! So far, I haven't checked for wear on the tensioners, since I don't ride much at the moment. Now it's time to buy some tools a bit at a time so I can at least check the tensioners before I ride again. I need sockets, wrenches and the gaskets to check them. Get that done hopefully this month, and just keep watching these two vids over and over again, so if I need to replace them, I'll have a better understanding of what is involved and hopefully get the sucker put back together correctly!! Rding makes my old, broke, disabled butt feel a heck of a lot better!! No way would I even attempt this job if I had not seen this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

Did this last winter. I suggest if anyone is doing this, to upgrade to the shoes made with Stanyl Polyamide the ones from "Cyco Gaskets" and not the stock Harley crap. Also, always replace the crap Harley INA inner cam bearings with torrington bearings. Always good practice to upgrade Harley parts because Harley engineers have shit for brains!

Good instructional video. I have a 2000 FLSTC and during COVID lockdown I did the teardown, but replaced the stock camplate with hydraulic chain tensioner, new cam bearings, cams, oil pump and lifters. On the top end replaced the oil breather sponge, flapper valves and o-rings. Also installed rocker lockers which did quiet down the top end. Thanks again for the great video.

@@delorean1 Makes sense. I plan on doing the tensioners and bearings when the weather cooperates. Servicing the top end while I'm at it. Still debating on cams because the 88 runs just fine and I already got a vrod that's plenty fast if that's how I'm feeling that day.

Thank you for a great video! I will be attempting to do my ‘03 Softail, I’ve pulled my cover and the inside tensioner is worn deep but not to metal yet , so no more riding it till I replace it. I will rewatch this video and take full written notes and get everything prepped. Thanks again! 😁

Excellent video ! I have an ‘03 FXSTD with 44k miles , i just popped off the side cover and the outside side tension pad is particularly worn but the inside pad is worn to the point I see the edge splitting away . Think I fought this just in time! I want to do a whole S&S 509 cam , hydraulic tensioner , plate bearing set upgrade but at $1,800 I may have to wait several months. With your video I can just do a simple OEM replacement costing only a few hundred bucks and save the money for the cam upgrade later in the year😁 Thanks again!✌️🇺🇸

This was absolutely exquisite.... Just wondering why a perfectionist like you doesn't use a lifting table.

I do have a lift as used in most of my other videos. By this was done offsite at another location.

Brilliant concise video manual. Carrying out procedure this winter on 04 tc88. Not wanting to upgrade performance , just reliability. No issues with bike so far , while apart what upgrades do you think i should consider.

Best video I have ever seen. Your attention to detail is impeccable. At mileage was this repair done on this bike? Just getting and idea of how long before this would be before it was necessary to be replaced? Thank you again.
