    Carb in 2001? Someone must have changed that because 95 was when they started with efi and by 2001 they should have all been EFI. Some people and possibly dealers change back to carbs so they can mod them and put turbos on ect. They do spoil you for sure. Anyone that knocks them has never ridden one.

    Hi Dave ! I dont understand why the crank shaft gas is passing the air filter, and glogging this with oily mist ? On most older cars the positive crankcase gas get feed too the intake mainfold , not forced true the carburetter, and glogging the jets !

  • @12voltvids

    No carb on this. Fuel injection. It isn't passing the air filter as the pcv gas goes in after the filter element so it is drawn directly back into the intake. Same as a modern car. If on other side of throttle plate it would cause a vacuum leak. Engines on bikes now just like car engines. ECM to control the engine, o2 sensors, vacumm sensor, TPS you name it. Very reliable. Never fails to start. All my prior bikes were carbs and constant riding especially when multple carbs. This one doesn't even have a key. Just turn it on and press start (fob in pocket). It was expensive, most expensive bike I have owned but in the 17 i have had it 1 break down that cost me 3 grand to fix. Compensator failed and got chewed up in primary drive taking out stator. 2 sets of tires and some oil changes. That's it. Will likely be my last bike. Hope it lasts for the repainder of my riding days. It's bike number 10 for me. I still have a 77 can-am 250 in the garage. Now that's a collector bike. About 5 left in the world of this model. Only 250 were built that were street legal. Bought that one when i was 14 my second bike. Bought it August 16 1977. I was in the show room buying that bike when the news came over the radio of the event that everyone remembers what they were doing.

    Here might be an added tip for you Dave, You might want to get whats called a catch a can. this apparatus is a smog reducer - where the vapor goes to a can and is collected and the oil and varnish and carbon as well as the smoke blow by will be greatly reduced going to your intake. I found this out on FordTechMakuloco where Brian installs on for a f150 - now it might not be available for Harley's but can something such as that be adaptable? Might be worth researching on...

    Vehicles with GDI and diesels use this to trap the oil vapours because if allowed into the intake will build up on intake valves and eventually cause a huge repair bill as the heads have to come off to clean the intake runners and valves. A can of intake cleaner every few years keeps things running smooth.

    I can't afford to pay mechanics for every little thing. Look at my car last month when i took it in thinking it was warranty only to be charged 800 to change a water shut-off valve for the heater. Something I never use because the ammount I drive my car never leaves electric mode and switches to gas unless i am on a road trip somewhere and that is in the summer when i don't need heat.

    It sounds like there is a slight leak on the inlet valve, so the expanding gasses escapes to the butterfly valve.

  • @12voltvids

    @12voltvids

    10 ай бұрын

    Butterfly valvegenerally is used to describe the choke butterfly on a carburetor because of the shape of the actual plate of self this case the throttle is round and there is no choke because it's EFI. where the throttle is closed of course it's not a perfect seal you have to have some are escaping it otherwise the engine would stop so even in the fully closed position there's a certain amount of air that goes through for idol. There is a stepper motor that can also open it slightly to maintain engine speed and provide high idle when it's cold the problem that happens is that carbon buildup and cooked oil and blow by vapours gets into they area where the idle air enters and blocks it resulting in too little arevabd and it literally starves the engine just like closing the damper on a diesel to stop it. This is not as big an issue on carbureted engines because the throttle is after the venturi so the fuel vapour is present and gasoline is a great solvent it removes the oil residue and it gets burned. GDI (gasoline direct injection) and diesel have even bigger problems. This crap gets built up in the intake valve and gumms them eventually requiring the had to be removed so the build up can be sand blasted off. This doesn't happen on conventional EFI because the injector is spraying fuel just before the valve. The fuel keeps the valve clean bit on direct injection just air and recycled combustion byproducts are there to contaminate the intake.

  • @coyote_den
    @coyote_den10 ай бұрын

    Remember the stuff that was basically pure ether? Was even called "Start Ya Bastard!" in Australia. Spray enough of that into the intake and you will get combustion. It just might not be *internal* combustion.

    Yes when my dad has his old diesels that was common to get them running. When it was cold he used to just leave it running at idle all night in the open carport. Lock the gate and the car and let it run all night rather than spend an hour trying to start it. Left it running all day at work too. It was in a company lot at the end of a 5km causeway with a gaurd shack. Needed the company sticker on the window to get through so nobody stealing anything. Had this giant tank in the back yard for the pool heater and had a hose and nozzle so he could fill up at home as diesel was not available at the local has stations. Used to run #2 furnace oil in the car. That was before they started dying it red.

    @@angryshoebox unreliable? Where do I start. First the car would grind the gears going into 2nd if you tried to shift hard. Second the turbo was an absolute piece of shit. The lag was so bad and then without warning would come on full right when least expected. This put me into 2 out of control spin. Once on a wet road and the second time on ice. Lucky i managed only because of my skill keep it on the road. My passenger pissed himself all over my seat. Refused to clean up his mess so has not been in my car since. Having someone squeal like a bitch didn't help my concentration getting the car under control. I was tired of this uncontrollable car pretty quick. While looking at new cars this young kid approaches me and says he thinks the car I am driving was one he had before. Told me what brand of stereo he had in it when traded in at a different dealer (the one I bought at) and was telling me he had already replaced the clutch as it went out and the turbo had also been replaced. It then became perfectly clear why the tranny was so tempremental and why the turbo so unpredictable. It had been either incorrectly rebuilt or it was the wrong turbo or the waste gate wasn't working properly. He even described locations of weather stripping damage that was not visible untill the doors opened. Yup this was his car. Asked him what the miliage was when he dumped it. He said 32000. I bought it at 12 snd it has only 21000 on the clock when he told me it was traded at 32. Told him i was going to call him as a witness that i was going to sue the dealer. Even took the license plate of the car he was driving and he said he wasn't getting involved. The car he was driving was registered to someone else that wouldn't reveal his name.
