HARDY WEINBERG EQUATION made easy for USMLE STEP 1 | Explained with example | Genetics
* You can find this topic on page no. 81 in First Aid 2015 and page no. 69 in First Aid 2016.
* At 7:23 i said 'p+q= 1/1000'....it should be 'p+q=1'. Its just slip of tongue. Please take a note of this.
* Do not forget to solve the question in the end of video.
* All the homozygous form of hereditary spherocytosis does not result in live birth. Although the main aim of question is to give the practice for Hardy Weinberg equation, just change the name of disease from Hereditary Spherocytosis to any other autosomal dominant disease whose homozygous form does not result in death. Rest of the question remains exactly same. There will be no change in answer.

* If you are first or second year medical student or if you have more than one year to prepare for USMLE Step 1 or any other exam then I strongly recommend you to watch Dr. Najeeb lectures to make your concepts very clear. If you don't have enough time to prepare for USMLE Step 1 then I would not recommend you to go through all the videos of Dr. Najeeb, just watch Neurology and Immunology.

I GENUINELY wanna thank you !! You made every hard part easy and easily accessible ! Keep posting videos !
Thanks so much, I’ve been trying to figure this out for 2 hours go bless
Great explanation! I don't know how I will do all this in 75 seconds lol
Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding X-linked dominant disease like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX1) does the Hady Weinberg equation work for finding out the prevalence of the disease?
Meet you are a life saver. Cleared so many things just few days before my exam. God bless you

hi.please can u clear my one doubt = in the question given at end we have to keep 1/5000 = to what q2 or 2pq.please reply soon and please tell how did u decide about that.i will be very thankful to u.
You are a legend!!! Great explanation
Loved the explanation on how the equation is derived , and also the bonus on XLR and AD diseases with Hardy weinberg !! Good going meet

Hi Patel, thank you so much for this video and do keep up the good work! Please I have a question...why did you say (at about 8.40) that the chance of Mrs. X being a carrier is 1? Isn't the chance of being a carrier always calculated as 2pq? Could you please explain why it is 1?
@nooraykhalid7498

you are right. you have to multiply that q value with 2
Thank you SO much for this video!
Thanks! Great as always ANSWER: AD 2pq=1/5000 p=1 2q=1/5000 q=1/5000 *1/2 q=1/10000 q^2=1/100000000 I think!

1/100000000....AD inheritance of hereditary spherocytosis so....2pq = 1/5000...p~1 therefore...2q=1/5000....and thus q=1/10000 and hence (1/q)2 =1/100000000....since (1/q)2 = homozygous diseased
Good presentation. I suggest it will better if you make it more precise and to the point.
Thank you for your explanation! For the question I got 1/100,000,000 --> Because if Prevalence of Hereditary Spherocytosis is 1/5000 which is 2pq where p = 1 then q = 1/5000 x 1/2 x 1 = 1/10,000 and since Hereditary Spherocytosis prevalence is q squared therefore it is 1/10,000 squared = 1/100,000,000... please let me know if I got it. Thanks
Bless you !!!

Is 2pq = 5000 ? Basically 2q=5000 ?
the last part about prevelance of AD disease , it equals = 2pq+q2 ( u said 2pq only ) Thanks for ur efforts patel
at 3 28 you said prevelance of disease is equal to q2 so in last scenario can 't you start it by q2 is equal to 1/5000 bcz it is prevelance of disease i think you missed some word or i have some misconception

It's [2][p][q] right so.. [2] [1] [1/70] = 0.0285 thats what I got
Is it 1 in 5000
For AD shouldnt the prevalence be (p^2 + 2pq)?
@b4birjupatel

Exactly. That's what I Thought! So what is the final answer?
awsom meet patel :) it helped alot but i have bg problem in maths, like i was knowing hw to solve question u had given in last but was unabl t find q value i knew 2pq is 1/5000 nd i hav t find out 2 x 1 x1/? =1/5000 nd that value l b q nd its square l be answe but hel ya i dnt knw maths

Thank u so much sir fr making every hard concept easy😁
For generalisations and the sake of simplicity , all enzyme deficiencies are AR , and all structural protein deficiencies are AD (exceptions apply like CF) . Hereditary spherocytosis is an AD condition . So , prevalence in AD is provided by "2pq" >>> So , 2pq=1/5000. >>>>q = 1/10000 (because p is near to 1). Since homozygous diseased is given by square of q , q2 = 1/100000000

I love you
Is the answer 1/10000
Hereditary spherocytosis can behave as AR or AD. If its behave as AR then the answer should be 1/2500 and if you consider it AD then it would be 1/10,000. LOL I guess, let me know if I am correct.
@zer0c00I

In first aid, hereditary spherocytosis is under AD. So I calculated the answer to be 1/10,000.
