Who the hell is Ironhead Sally? Well here's my channel description:
Old School Bikes and Old School Ways! Ride hard, wrench a lot, and always having a blast.
Bike camping, wrenching, and shenanigans. My husband and I create motorcycle content for people that are tired of seeing all of the fake insta accounts of sponsored boring yuppies. Here's some realness, we are just broke bikers living the low life and getting by. I ride a 1985 Ironhead Chopper as my daily, my touring bike is a 1984 FXR. We have lots of Ironheads and FXRs and are constantly building more, trying to keep these old neglected scoots on the road instead of rotting away in a garage.
Appreciate all the love & support
Keeping it Real! Keep it Sketchy!
FTW💚Sally

I rode the 50 from the other direction - East Bay to Salt Lake - on my Sportster about a decade ago. Took 120 through Yosemite, then 395 up to 50. I remember riding through a stretch of 50 where I hadn't seen another vehicle on the rode for quite a while, thinking, "well, if I break down here, that'd kinda suck." I rode past the International, but didn't stop cuz I was on a tight time schedule. Regret that, now. I don't live in that part of the country anymore, but after seeing this, maybe I'll try to get back there.

Sally...front headgasket?
Backfiring out the carburetor, or out the exhaust pipe? Could be a hot spot inside the cylinder head or predetonation... too much compression, not enough octane in fuel when run under high rpms. Unlikely it's burnt valves if it only does it at higher speeds.
@ironheadsally
10 ай бұрын
Yeah it seemed to happen more when hot, so we think it’s detonation too. Gonna get some fresh gaskets and top end rebuild this winter anyways lol
@feloniousmonk3049
10 ай бұрын
@@ironheadsally Maybe try thicker head gaskets, and a better brand of them. I wouldn't wait until winter, unless you plan to stop riding it until then. Detonation can really quickly grenade a whole motor, you don't want that on such a nice bike.... give her a rest until she can mechanically be gone through before you wreck the pistons on her. You running 91 or 93 octane all the time? Might give up some "oomph" but if you went with a piston and gasket combination that gets you down to a 8.5 : 1 compression ratio, you could run 87 octane all the time. Might be a consideration, since premium gas here in CA is pushing $6 a gallon, Regular a lot less. Can you even get a 5 speed gear box for those? Might be pretty nice upgrade, if available
@ironheadsally
10 ай бұрын
@@feloniousmonk3049 yah this is the last long haul for the bike until the top end is redone, it looks like it has the thinner gaskets so gonna upgrade, and out here in higher elevation 91 octane is highest. Keeping it old skool tho, dont need 5 gears, i have evo for that lol. She’ll get some TLC here soon, lol cheers!!
@feloniousmonk3049
10 ай бұрын
@@ironheadsally Yeah, if the thicker gaskets don't fix the problem, lower compression pistons and rings with a flex honed bore to let the new rings and pistons seat in would fix it, I'd think. Or replace the heads with a 1977 or later aluminum head for better heat dissipation, if you're going fast on longer trips. Gotta get rid of the heat, out of the head. Aluminum is the best option.
