Hard vs Soft Motorcycle Luggage: Pros and Cons of Each. Podcast, Episode 18

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Grace and I have both done quite a few miles with luggage on our bikes and while we both admit to having a bias towards soft motorcycle luggage, we do still see the perks and advantages of hard motorcycle cases, as well. In this week's episode, we discuss and debate the advantages and disadvantages of hard vs soft motorcycle luggage.

I have never had soft luggage primarily as i bought hard Givi Trekker type. I only travel locally and shop. I can see the benefits of soft for off road travel but for me the security of hard makes more sense. In Euroland visiting cities I'd be worried about leaving soft gear for thieves to steal. One day I'll try the softies I guess!

Once I saw soft luggage catch fire on German Autobahn in front of me from the heat of the exhaust. Once I saw an accident caused by soft luggage not strapped firm enough and going into the rear wheel. Severe crash. Once I became involved in an accident on my BMW GS with Zega alu panniers on............ and the way my bike fell with me on it would definitely have made me without one leg and most probably dead. I have been riding off-road on any bike for years. Today I always use alu panniers. Soft luggage last a few years while alu panniers will just last and last and last................................. I use water proof inner bags even though I never had water intrusion.................not even in rain or crossing rivers. When arriving to a cabin or pitching my tent or whatever, I just grab the inner bag and off I am. I can strap dedicated extra bags on top of my allu panniers. Hard luggage usually have it's lowest point quite lower than soft luggage and that makes it easier to have the heaviest things lower in advance for the security and handling. I can use a hard pannier to supæport the bike when I have a punkture or when I need to service anything with the bike in vertical free of ground. I use my panniers as chair and table. My pillion use topbox to lean up against. When dropping the bike, it's so easy to pick it up again by myself because it never really go all the way down. My camera equipment is not ruined from dropping the bike as it often would be in soft luggage. (unless it's a severe accident at high speed (where everything is totalled). On a small bike, hard luggage will have a huge impact on the weight. No-Go. On a medium or big adventure bike, the difference in weight from soft to hard luggage is not that much, wouldn't notice. No matter what luggage you ride with, the extra weight will impact the handling. A steering damper comes in handy to compensate that weights impact on the stability of the front wheel. So when you guys say "On road = hard luggage" / "off-road = soft luggage"......................................... I say: "Small bike = soft luggage" / "+210ish kg of bike = hard luggage". You're welcome. Cheers.

I started hard but I am bi now. Hard around town and commuting (fast and easy security) and soft for ADV travel (CO BDR in July). I went down hard on the South Canol Rd in Yukon with hard on my first summer with my Africa Twin. Rock Strapped the down-side to keep it closed and finished the trip. Cheers...

It's situational right? Biggest issue is security, I think. I bought a few key matched cable locks off of Amazon to give myself peice of mind. I always try to get a seat at restaurants where I can see the bike when I have soft luggage. Of course anyone with wire cutters could defeat that.

I always suggest one of the rackless systems to other people using most of the same reasons you mention here. Yet, all my bikes have hard bags of varying quality because they came with them. Both bikes that have factory bags are actually disappointing favoring form over function but my old BMW airhead and my old Concours had awesome factory bags when "color-matched" meant you bought a black bike to match the bags. The arguements on leg safety with hard bags are something not worth arguing for or against and the weight absolutely is an issue with giant AL bags. The organization arguements are kinda hard to swallow...but I am also a guy that has a packing list by color coded 20-30L lightweight dry bags for stuff that needs to be dry and mesh bags for things that need to air out or be seen. Grab the yellow bag out of the left pannier and your tank bag if staying in hotel...maybe the mesh bag of your dirty clothes. Camping...add the 40L drybag from the back seat. No matter what, don't care what system you use, unless you camp every single night and fully unload the bike to do it, organize all the camping gear in one big drybag so if the perfect campsite is 50 or 200' up the footpath, you make the trip once (OK twice for when you forget the beer on the bike).

I have a Yamaha FJR1300 with the factory hard panniers/top box and find them great. They are waterproof and easy to get into and remove. I just unlock with the key and pick up with the handle and carry inside, it's that easy. I do have a brand new CF Moto 450MT which I'll try soft bags on as I want to take it moto camping and going off road.

I ran with hard luggage on my old commuter bike for almost 18 years. When I sold it I switched to soft luggage & haven't looked back. It was really convenient to have a big top box to throw the helmet & gear in after riding into work. But now I commute with a small bag strapped to the bike. It holds a bigger bag & backpack that I can deploy if I need to pick up some shopping on the way home, plus there's room left over for anything else I need to carry for the day. It doesn't upset the bike's handling & creates a lot less wind resistance that improves fuel economy. The big bonus is that I can easily move it between bikes & don't need a dedicated rack as a mounting point.

I use both, I have what I call my “townie” panniers, which I use for commuting and grocery shopping, etc. It is somewhat more secure and easier to get things in and out. When I am traveling and expect to be off road I use soft luggage. I do actually like the pannier frame when mounting the soft luggage as it makes it easier to secure to the bike and much less likely to rub on the exhaust or tire if the strapping comes loose or fails.

I first had two hard cases on my 950 I cant remember, apart from dufflle bags, soft luggage being much of an option back then, today with Kriega and Mosko etc there are plenty of good ones... I found with hard luggage filtering was a bit dodgy... not so much with soft... but I do miss having two seats all the time when camping.

The lean angle is significantly less than soft luggage or no luggage. You'll scrape a hard panier in a hard corner, very easily. Which can throw ya sidways or like a cruiser and just loose traction. Sturgis is an experience😅 I was there in 2014. Parking now is basically, theft under a thousand. The week before, everyone is doing "the rides" before gettin shitfaced. And there's plenty of riding. Deadwood is a must see. I recommend the KOA at Devils Tower. Far enough away, from the price gouging and chaos. But the riding around the area is worth it. A couple different routes back and forth without touching the interstate and riding around the corner from the east on 24. Seeing the tower 😯 at dusk🙌

I have hard and soft luggage on the same bike. For hard luggage I have one ammo case modified to lock and depressurize. Sometimes you just need things locked up, however no lock is full proof but it keeps honest people honest. All other luggage is soft, either Moskomoto or Kriega.

If there's a possibility that you'll drop your bike, then soft is the only way to go. If you're a pavement adventurer, then the security of hard cases makes sense. For myself, soft is the only option. If you're concerned about your soft luggage, use a bike cover and it's less of a concern (out of sight, out of mind)
