A lot of people in N.S have a side gig. Scrap metal, babysitting, reselling online to name a few. Minimum wage employers try to make you work more shifts, longer hours etc. with no benefits or thought given to your life outside of work. The managers often will give your hours to someone else if you do refuse to come in on your day off. The roads, the roads the roads. They are falling apart after years of neglect. Initially, a portion of the tax on gas was supposed to go towards the road maintenance . That didn't happen. The people and beautiful natural surroundings make up for a bit of the drawbacks though.

Still, like you say, it really doesn't matter it seems to be the same propaganda, taxed to the max,.. but most people are happy with it and don't want anything changed.

I have lived in NS all my life. You did a great job on this video but one of the biggest concerns in NS in 2023 is the lack of housing and rentals. So mamy people cannot find housing and many are facing homelessness. The cost of renting and buying has skyrocketed. I know people looking for over a year for a rental and still have no place and both work full time. They say within a half hour of a place being listed, the landlord is flooded with requests to view and its unusual to even get a viewing. During the pandemic many people flooded into NS and it is partly the reason we have such a severe housing crisis. I see news articles of international students struggling trying to find housing. Hopefully solutions will be found soon.

Born and raised here. Lived in Alberta for a few years and now live here again. Pre pandemic it was a pretty decent spot. Moderate wages, high taxes and low cost of homes / rents. Post pandemic wow what do I even say. Extremely over priced just about everything. If I didnt purchase a house pre everything going crazy I'd honestly just leave. The house across the road from me sold in 2019 for $380k and just re sold last year with no changes in 2023 for $900k. Wages are virtually the same so ya you get the drift. Healthcare haha. Good luck seeing a specialist or getting appointments. You'll be waiting an extended period of time without a doubt. Its a beautiful place dont get me wrong but people already struggled here before everything went nuts. Now everythings out of hand. Growing up it was strange to see a handful of homeless people in a year but there's literally hundreds of them everywhere now living in tents and a good chunk of those people work 40 hrs a week. Pure insanity.

@@QuestCanada I was commenting specifically on Nova Scotia not Canada or the world as a whole. Undoubtedly of course there are far worse places to live than Canada. Always has been and there always will be. Canada like the rest of the world is experiencing difficulties but Nova Scotia particularly has really taken a beating. My dad lives in Newfoundland and I have plenty of friends in Alberta and neither place has experienced anything close to what we're going through. The cost of housing has gone up 200% or more easily as well as food. Wages have virtually stayed the same. I grew up here. People have always been known to struggle in the maritimes so everything going on is a major deal. People no longer have hope of owning a home or ever paying theirs off and retiring. Mobile homes are now the cost of a nice family home 3-4 years ago It's insane. Living in Canada theres a certain expectation of quality of life you cant just cut that in half basically over night and assume its not that bad because its worse somewhere else. It used to be strange to see 1-2 homeless people traveling into the city on occasion. Now there are literally hundreds of them everywhere. Tent cities with people living outside and freezing to death all winter. A lot of these people have full time jobs and can't find an apartment that's affordable.

I think it is a good place to retire e.g. when you moved to Alberta and made great money and now come back with a nice pension (boomers). Or just retiring from teaching in Nova Scotia. But if you are young and want to live in Nova Scotia and raise a family, you better be a teacher, self employed electrician or something like that.. The cost of living is very high (taxes, food, insurance,..) compared to the low wages.

Thank you. Moved to NS from a prosperous Ontario town over three years ago . First, the upside. House bought here about 60% less than a comparable one back there. Bought it for $200k, (2020 pricing). Similar one in my old town, easily $500K.. Actually real cost about $600K adding on interest of a mortgage. So I'm up $400K. Downside. Awful health care. Lost my family doctor and joined other 80,000 on a waiting list for one. Stay out of ER"S best can. It will be a hellish experience. Expect to wait 5 to 16 hours to see a never met before doctor. Its a vastly different culture. If you want big city amenities then move to Halifax/HRM. Ignore second paragraph. Cost of living and taxes already talked about. Don't look to find good value for money taken from you. Won't. Other intangibles to consider. Lifestyle. Pace here either a blessing or curse. As a type A personality, driving here a huge stressor.. Traffic goes 10 kph under a posted speed limit. (Don't do that anywhere near Toronto). Most streets bad shape too. Many folks like the slower pace of life here. Are folks friendlier here? My take is one is treated way one treats. Bottom line? Overall for me, a good decision. You? Want to find paradise on Earth? A definite maybe.

I grew up in Nova Scotia, and another negative factor is racism and intolerance towards Newcomers. In Toronto, you would not have to worry about this much, but NS is home to real life trailer park boys. Atlantic Canada is Canada's South or Appalachia; and can be a little backward But if there is special job placement programs for international students and newcomers to NS in general -- that is like lighting a match to gas tank especially since locals and regular students have a hard time getting work in a province known for its unemployment.

I got my Canadian citizenship a while back. As a newcomer, I landed in Toronto and had been living in Ontario for almost a decade. I recently came NS (not Halifax) for work. Everyone back home in Ontario told me people in Atlantic Canada are nice and generous. While I have met some amazing folks, my overall experience has been rather bitter. Yes, the landscape is beautiful but I've experienced countless instances of micro-aggressions and even downright overt racism. I have heard such stories from older immigrants but this is the first time I'm experiencing this. My experience in smaller Ontario towns has been way better than this. But maybe, I am the exception😢

@@Moonstruck89 I am sorry that you have a bitter experience living in Nova Scotia. Everything you are saying confirms what I witnessed as a child. Thank God all of the old men who would throw around the N word in the 80s & 90s have passed, but it is sad to me that it only has slightly improved. For Nova Scotians; it is all about employment. If they are working and Newcomers come in and it does not affect their employment-- they will be more welcoming. However, if it is the case where Newcomers are provided with a pathway to work or take their jobs --- there will be racism and tension -- even though it is not the Newcomer's fault. Halifax has always had people from the around the world. It is an International shipping port; and I believe that more ships from other Countries dock in Halifax than any other Canadian port. Toronto is a different world. I see Newcomers in Government or Bureaucratic positions which you would not see in most places around the world I am sorry for your experience once again. I know when people from other Countries think of Canada they think of Toronto; and then they end up in either Eastern/Atlantic or Western Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, etc.) and come across a Canada they were not expecting that is closer to the US

Myself and witness Larry Penney had meeting with assigned workplace investigator Chris Duncan. At this meeting, this assigned investigator told myself and Larry Penney how happy he and the company were with the site supervisor he was about to investigate. Not much of a biased investigator! Of course, I was let go without cause. This proceeded to small claims court were myself and Larry Penney told adjudicator Darrel Pink this same story, how the investigator was obviously biased. Adjudicator Pink had no problem with this assigned investigator doing the investigation, and dismissed my claim. Only in Nova Scotia would this be allowed in the justice system!

Sad to say doctors and nurses are in high demand. Most people wait 3 years for a family doctor of their own. Most hospitals have an emergency department, but many are closed most of the time... the Queen's General in Liverpool for example is now only open in the morning during the week. So you can only have an emergency then....and they may still not see you and tell you to come back the next day. So if you are a doctor expect to be asked to do overtime and have grumpy tired patients.

@@vashtisamaroo4629 So many people come here, and can't find housing or jobs. It's good to show the hardships, because it's not fair. Landing here, not fluent in the language, no contacts, can be really hard. Jobs and housing are so scarce, that I can't even help people anymore, even with 50+ years of business experience, and knowing my city well. I'm happy she is not painting a false picture of "all easy". But, it's still a beautiful place, and yes, people are friendlier than the rest of Canada.
