Hannibal and Carmilla: Variations on a Gothic Romance (A Video Essay)
Фильм және анимация
In which I look at the Hannibal television show and a vampiric romance and examine how one gets pulled from a world that looks like our own to something much much stranger.
Spoiler alert for all of Hannibal and Carmilla (which is about 147 years old, so I wouldn't worry about it). Like/subscribe etc. etc. More videos to come soon!

What a beautiful comparison. I was aware of certain similarities, but you gave me a whole new perspective on both stories. I think it's very interesting that we still tell the same stories 150 years later, it shows that there is something deeply ingrained in the human psyche about darkness, attraction and otherness. The wish to break free from society and its restrictions, to find the forbidden beauty in something that should repulse us. I think it's also really telling that both stories are about homoromantic/homosexual relationships and the ambiguity that comes with them sometimes. I don't think it is homophobia (maybe in Carmilla's case a bit, but back then you couldn't publish a book about a happy gay couple...) but the way we are conditioned to see stories and relationships. A man and a woman together is always seen as a potential romance happening, this is just what media has told us, again and again. There is a safety in that, knowing how to categorize these relationships. A large age gap, characters who are either very young or very old and family bounds are other ways to set a relationship in certain context and help the audience along. But two people aged 16-60 of the same gender, roughly the same age, not related, with a friendship that isn't developing in a way that has been shown to us as 'acceptable'... yeah, that makes us nervous. Because there isn't a definitive blueprint for something like that. And if one of them is 'other' in a way that is seen as unnatural in their society, well, who knows what will happen? Anyway, kudos :)
lovely video!!! I love the contrast between the lawful side in Carmilla being successful (arguably, ambiguously I suppose?) in killing her, and the FBI’s/Jack and Alana’s plan to kill Dolarhyde as well as kill Hannibal failing and being foiled by Will, who unambiguously chooses to help Hannibal genuinely escape, and then to finally kill with him and finally fulfill his own “becoming”
This video is incredibly well written, and you made some really good points! Your channel is terribly underrated too :(

Great video essay mate. Are you planning to make more videos like this about gothic literature or film? Keep up the great work.
Really well done!
Hi Sean! This video is truly interesting. I must admit, I've never heard of Carmilla before but I fully intend on reading it now. You managed to pull out aspects of both stories that correlate and complete each other and did it without sounding like it's a high school essay which is difficult when putting together a comparative analysis. So big congrats on your first video! I'm off to watch all the other ones now 😂

Thank you so much, Julia (and many apologies for not responding to your kind words until now). I'm very glad it didn't end up sounding too high school-ish, something I was worries about. And I do hope you read Carmilla as I love that story. I'd love to hear what you think if you end up reading it!

Sorry for being so bad about adding new videos over the last few years (PhD life had gotten in the way). However, if you like this video, you might be interested in a symposium on author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu I have organized and contributed a video essay to. All videos in the symposium will be available on KZread at this channel which you can subscribe to: kzread.info/dron/aoug6gJ496-6smVyQs0KZg.html The videos, consisting of video essays, conference-style papers, and creative work, will premiere on KZread on 8 October 2022. All videos will then be available for on-demand viewing afterwards. I hope to see some of you there!
