Art against morality, sounds exactly like what hannibal is about

The whole show is basically Hannibal courting Will via murder and Will sort of losing himself (/"becoming" if we use the vocabulary of the show) over the episodes. :) Seduction is the right word here :D Something I like too, the show is blue-ish, and a little desaturated, so that the dishes with human flesh are always a little grey, rather than pink or red. It makes the impeccably presented dishes look unappetizing and delicious at the same time. It's not just Hannibal's wit that draws you it, he makes a lot of in-jokes with the audience, there are so many cannibal puns and jokes about how he sources his meat etc etc that Hannibal and the audience get, but his fellow diners do not. We're invited to laugh with Hannibal at his guests who did not understand that he even made a joke at all. He basically "nudge-nudge wink-wink-"s at us. :D

I could make this a lot simpler: Mads Mikkelsen is utterly charismatic and there's not another actor alive who could make Hannibal Lecter so desirable.

This not only helped me shine some light on my own emotional involvement in the show and Hannibal in particular but also underlines why this show is so incredibly good. Also, this analysis poses interesting views on emotional responses in general, though I loved the conclusion that in essence, our emotions are indeed very complex and therefore hard to evaluate, which Hannibal is just a great exemplification for. On a side note, loved the structure in the form of a set meal :) Last but not least, personally I consider "Hannibal" chronically underrated, at least outside of the following itself, so it's always nice to see people acknowledging its unique charactersitics.

This essay is really remarkable! Now I can actually recognise how the series interacts with the viewer and invites us to examine our (partial) allegiance to Hannibal. “Are you, in this very moment, observing or participating?”

Awesome video. Finally an analysis that actually gives the show the intellectual consideration it deserves. Subscribed. Shared. Liked. Probably a rewatch.

I am not a big fan of US TV but this is the best US TV series I have seen for a long time. I am sure I am not the only one but often related to villains when younger and more than flirted with crime, possibly as a consequence, as a teen so my morals were questionable and sat tests in professional environments for my personality but the criminal justice system beats one down so I grew up to be boringly normal. These days I am a much more calm person. People often comment on my lack of stress even in high stress situations but I tend to think being involved in high risk situations at some point in your life means it is much easier to handle everyday stress.

This is amazing. Your writing style and voice were so clear that even though these are incredibly complex ideas, I understood and could follow. Very very very well done. Is there any chance you had the script for this? It would be great to read it as a written essay!

I was madly in love with the Film, (SOTL) the books, & this series. Now, I can barely stomach the cooking scenes, but have always wondered why the film had such a hold on me. This was such a relieving explanation!!

Absolutely excellent analysis of the characters and the show! One of the primary aspects of this show is how we navigate our appreciation of and fascination with Hannibal, who is absolutely disgusting and vile, almost beyond belief. The show runners had to walk a very fine line with what they allowed us to see of Hannibal's crimes. Some of the acts he commits are so abominably sadistic (such as removing a woman's lungs while she is still breathing) that they could not show them on screen, because they would have made it impossible for us to watch him. They had to show just enough of what he does to give us a solid impression of what he is, but conceal from us some of the worst parts that we really don't want to witness. It creates a show that is fascinating but hard to watch at times.

The cannibalism actually didn’t bother me. If it bothered you, perhaps you need to reflect on how moral it is eating non-human animals. It’s all the same to me. And in a way, this aspect makes me respect Hannibal more. He’s not a hypocrite like most people are. But, what did bother me was the mental torture he put Will through. That crossed a line. Will was supposed to be his friend. And he recognised how beautiful and unique his mind was, yet set out to break that anyway.

So you dislike Hannibal the television show because you're a homophone? I mean it probably comes down to it because Will and Hannibal are in a romantic relationship by the end of it.

people who defend such characters largely do while saying how hot they are lol they try to say hannibal loved will even in his own way. all hannibal did was torture will and excessively so, so insanely, that it took me out of the show. lol some people can relate to wanting to do manipulative harmful things to a person they want to possess while calling it love. others can relate to going back to an abusive relationship where they like to pretend they are special. that the person who they are with will never eat them just everyone else around them. ive seen that too much in real life. Hannibal had no dimension to me. it's generally depressing and his portrayal is dull and flat. :( the amount of time spent on soap opera whishy washy will is in insult to the rest of the talented cast especially hannibal himself. will made him look layered in a negative way not in a positive compelling way. will made him look like a fool through the entire show. he had no redeeming qualities however i enjoyed certain bad qualities and they were sadly scarce. the rare scenes when he isn't hiding who he is from other characters. the scene with mirriam, verger, when he's fighting, that European officer that was going to sell him out, able gideon, when he's with bedilia in season 3. he seems to tap into some fire.

Honestly, I can undersrand where you stand, say point of view. I can't relate much because just like the channel author stated the show was made to beautify the cannibalism, the highly intelligent originally Thomas Harris's character Hannibal. 1. The show did make its goals succeeded. I was allured. 2. The adaption movies, Hannibal starring by Mr. Hopkins was already strangely captivating. The show only maximized this aspect. 3. I believe that because you have a distaste toward the characteristics of Hannibal that you can not find him multi dimensioned, or say interesting. 4. I am terribly sorry if you have seen or experienced manipulative treatments, or alike sorts. But I was not, I was intrigued to study the character on emotional and mental domains. 5. I rather related to Will as an self isolated person myself, and was influenced by his pov, his attraction towards Hannibal the enigma, and the target of his seduction. 6. It is strange to say the least to find you here. As I would assume only fans would look for this. 7. Hannibal has never been an easy, good mood boosted series. It instead gives audiences a sense of self reflection, self doubt and self discovery. It helps me come to terms with some of my psychological symtoms. It was not a fun process but necessary. That's alll.

He probably did love Will in his own way, but he also mentally tortured Will in his own way for three seasons and that’s unforgivable. Nice to see somebody else recognise what an abusive, unhealthy relationship that was. Will deserved so much better.

@Thrifty Freebies Many social relationships tend to be abusive even in an unconscious way, I'm not justifying anything, but to say it as if it were Illogical and very obvious is not what it really demonstrate, we can look directly how Hannibal heads to Will throughout the series taking into account his own mistakes being a character who doesn't even think he has them, of course we can't talk about a healthy relationship in the whole show, Hannibal is a series that explores a dark reality and yet, it made it very clear to us that the feeling of love was reciprocal between them two
